I've got my dealer looking for me a TRP. I told him I wanted the operator 3/4 rail. Is the rail the way to go? The bull barrel is going to make field stripping harder. Is there any advantage to the bull barrel over the bushing?

Advantage is more weight in the front end, resulting in less muzzle rise and faster follow up shots. Difference in accuracy between the two should be unnoticeable for 98% of shooters with the edge going to the bushing barrel. Another possible downside to bull setup is cost of fitting replacement parts. A worn bushing is much easier to replace than a worn bull barrel. Rail is up to you, obviously if you want to hang stuff on it you need a rail.

That is the exact setup I am looking for. Its been tough finding one, but I am not in a hurry right now. I am going with the bull barrel - the difference would probably be minimal, but I just want it. Good luck tracking do your pistol! Post pics when you find it.

For the 3/4 rail TRP with bull barrel, I recommend getting a Dawson Precision toolless guide rod for easy break down--it's worth the coin and quick. No paperclip fiddling.
The slide is cut for a bushing too if you ever want to send her to SACS for a bushing/barrel set up. The bull shoots nice though, mine is staying that way.

yep once you have a bull barrel you can always go to a bushing barrel shit you can have both fitted for same gun if you really wanted. i've never been a bull barrel fan. But a rail is nice if your actually goin to use it for a light otherwise stick with a slick one.

Some food for thought, if memory serves you cannot use bull barrel setups in IDPA. So if that is a future goal, I would opt for another version. Personally, if it was me and it was an occasional plinker/nostalgia piece...I would just search for a full rail TRP.

Thanks for the replies. After doing more research the operator is what I want for sure. A light rail would be handy for some evening armadillo control. I like the full rail but they are a bit more expensive and finding a holster may be a problem. It also looks like finding the pistol may take some time. I may have to call some of the bigger shops myself if my dealer is unable to find me one.

I have the loaded operator with the 3/4 rail. What does the TRP have that's different?

Frontstrap checkering.

Bull barrel (well, a 5" one) is banned in USPSA single stack as well.

Thought maybe a picture or two would get ya motivated. Haha

Man I love the TRP operators. Once I finish my 308 build one of these will be next. So hard to decide between a full rail and 3/4, they both look great.

My vote goes to the full rail I Ditched the bull barrel for a Storm Lake Threaded barrel, with custom egw bushing and plug so I can strip it easier. Was one of my better choices, and now I await a 45 osprey to complete it.

That full rail is the cat's ass! Nice pistol. I had a TRP half rail that I absolutely loved, but sold it only to get a DD MK18. You can rest assured that I will have another in the future, my only deal was the sight options with the rear cut being bomar. If I could find one I'd opt for a Long Beach Operator, just to have the Novak cut rear sight. The MC operators are built to the same tolerances as a TRP and use the same barrel as in the standard bushing style TRP. Good grips and grip tape would suffice until you had the front strap checkered if you wanted...... Just ideas. FWIW great pistols though

TylerD - So your talking about something along these lines. Still need to get the front strap checkered but other then that its done.

MC operator

Yes sir exactly that! That's awesome. If you need a second opinion on how she shoots let me know and you can send it my way :D. That's how I would set my next railed SA 1911 up. Absolutely gorgeous!

..........yep..................IT JUST MOVED A LITTLE

send your non checkered guns to chris james, or chuck rogers for just the strap work. either one is amazing golf ball and they will just do that in a really quick turn around.

If you need a 3/4 rail, there is but one option in your price range. The green / black MC Operator. The issues with the TRP Bull operator have been discussed. Or the professional operator - $2600 range. I suggest either the TRP no rail, or MC Operator. I have owned all the above. If it were my first 1911, I would get the TRP no rail. The CLASSIC. However, the MC is awesome if you want a railed gun. Your buying a Springer, you already got that part.

I think the bull barrel and light rail can get front heavy easily. Full rail is great but same weight balance issue. If you are not hanging stuff off the rail, dont get it. If you are, 3/4 rail is good. Trp will have better fit and finish with small perks than the mc operator.

I used to have a long beach operator fromg springfield and i liked it more than the TRP.
