Who Else Loves That First Cup of Coffee in the Morning

Not a coffee snob but Kenya AAA is the best coffee I ever had and I have a cousin in Hawaii that sends Kona once in a while which in my opinion is nothing special.
Seems like these dirty hipster like burnt tasting coffee and beer that taste like fucking bong water.

I was out in San Fran and went to a local cool coffee place and they were using that method to make coffee and it was AMAZING. What's that called? It is kind of a cross between drip and french press, right?

Its a Chemex.

Just learned about it last fall which is sad.

Made in Chicopee Massachusetts (an anus horribilus type of place since the end of the manufacturing revolution) since 1941.

They make some neat brewers that will give proper water temp and ensure good water dispersion over the grinds.

Here is their site....

Im a cheap fuck and just use a whistling kettle.

I note Whole Foods also stocks these and filters.

I dont have much issue with the Yeti cup.
My old Thermos brand one (old old favorite) is that way for sure. Hot as poured 2+ hrs later.

As for the chemex and pourover coffee. It is absolutely amazing.
Getting an 8 yr old around for school and stuff has me busy enough in the AM. I do use one on weekends or days off. So I use the regular ole coffee pit on a timer.
Friends who have had a cup of pour over are amazed at the difference in taste with same beans made in a regular drip coffee pot.

I use a courser grind.
I have a burr grinder I use and grind for each one. Its a “slow down and enjoy” kind of process.

And doing that while bacon and eggs (over easy) are in the skillet and enjoying them all together is just perfect for me.

Reminds me of my grandad. He loved mornings like that.

Eggs were a little "over fried" this AM but I do like that "crisped" protein and that Smithy pan does it so well.

Since reading of the benefits of Turmeric I grind fresh root onto my bacon and eggs which gives them a yellow look and a bit of curry zip. Breakfast is the way to start a day of unlimited opportunity.

Usually having a mouth full of food and introducing your drink to same is kind of revolting (think tuna fish sandwich with milk :( ) but there is something about coffee that enhances the flavor of bacon and eggs.

Similarly, when I have my afternoon coffee I pair it up with an ounce or so of mixed nuts - walnuts, Brazils, hazelnut, macadamias, cashews, almonds, pecans - try it, chew up some nuts take a sip of coffee its like a flavor ejaculation in your suck.

I usually dont drink coffee with food in my mouth, but the combo is darn good.

Im not sure I can try the nuts n coffee. You said flavor ejaculation..... kinda ruined it! ?

Will try today. Nuts and a piece of fruit are my often afternoon snack. Usually an apple.

Im with you, Pizza and a sip of coke? Make me puke.

I dont know though coffee with bacon and eggs.....If I put my fried egg/bacon frittata in a bowl and poured coffee over it to eat it like stew It would probably be just fine.

I think it has to do with the somewhat complimenting flavors.... nutty bacon/nutty coffee as well nutty nuts, nutty coffee brew.

Only other liquid/solid mouth mix that sounds appealing might be great steak with great rye.

I think salt also has a part. Has to be salty.

Never had steak and rye and would totally try it. Rye is usually after dinner for me.

Also a good red wine with the right steak or pasta is good. None of that sweet crap. Big n bold is where its at.

I dont even like soda. Prefer water or coffee always.
Though good fresh lemonade if not too sweet is pretty good......

Yeah, total coffee addict here too. I've got all the methods/doodads too....AeroPress, French-Press, Pour-over and standard electric Mr. Coffee. I'm trying to remember when I started, but it was definitely after the Marine Corps...probably in college.

Started with the standard fare, Folgers etc with cream and sugar. Now I've only been drinking it black for the past decade. I buy whole bean and grind and buy pre-ground as well...depending on mood and time. My favorites are Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Sumatran and Guatemalan. I really like Kona as well....the real shit, not blends! Found a really good one when I was in Hawaii 10 years ago, Kona Joe. Try it!

A good friend of mine from Colorado owns his own coffee company called, Conundrum Coffee. They have an amazing Yirgacheffe. He also owns Toddy cold brew now too. I never got into the cold brew stuff myself though. I will try just about anything and like grabbing new stuff when I travel. Alaska, believe it or not, has a bunch of great roasters. If you're ever in Fairbanks, stop by The Alaska Coffee Roasting Co. Friggin' amazing!

Just finished cup #1.
French Roast brewed strong, hotter than Selma Hayek and blacker than Hillary’s soul.....

Headed out in a few for the weekly “see what we can get at the grocery” trip.

Good luck out there. We have not ventured into a grocery story yet post-lock down. I hear it is hit/miss around here. We have discovered "Instacart" and have had a couple deliveries. So far, so good.

I had a couple months worth of everything we need/use already, and have since added to the stash. And yes, as soon as I saw idiots hoarding the TP already a few weeks ago I brought in more and beat the madness, so we are good there and last night discovered a whole case of TP tucked away in the basement that I had forgotten about, so using the TP calculator we are good for another year. :)

i use a hand grinder and shoot for about the consistency of course table salt. I love the Chemex and Aero Press.

What hand grinder do you use? I need to get one just in case the electricity goes out.

My wife asked me last night, "How long do you think this stay at home situation is going to last?" I looked at her and said, "Honey, nobody really knows. It could go on for months."

She stared at me and said, "Are you kidding?" I said, "Nope, I'm seriously not kidding."

@Centuriator right now im using a BRCC hand grinder. Does the job, Its heavy, the handle is not long enough and the cup that holds the grounds is not big enough. When I order another one (soon, maybe today) it will be https://www.oehandgrinders.com/LIDO-3-_c_30.html . Also another thought on the Chemex. I like both types of filters and find both work for well different blends of coffee. One is bamboo and one is white paper.

Yikes, I didn't think they were that expensive! But I guess like most things, it is true that you get what you pay for.

I'm out of caffeinated coffee. We only have decaf left that we reserve for sketchy visitors.

Black Rifle Coffee is offering up massive discounts and I appreciate how they send coffee to the troops/first responders when you buy coffee.

Now this is what I call a crisis. I hope the CARE act covers your caffeination needs.

I told my wife, "It's so weird, I sit here thinking, 'OK, what do I have to do today? Where do I have to go?" And then I realize: Nothing and nowhere.

I realize how much personal discipline and routine is important at times like this. I could just let myself go, not shower, not shave, no routine, but I stick to my routines. Up at 0 dark thirty. SSS while coffee is brewing. Get dressed and ready to go. I may venture out today to the bank and post office.

Which is why when this shit first hit the fan, I ran to the store, not to buy bullets or toilet paper, but about 4-6 months worth of coffee...just in case. :D

Honestly, I wake up looking forward to that awesome hot beverage of caffeinated water that has passed through the grounds of beans that have been roasted to perfection, ground perfectly, and has had water at the perfect temperature to extract all the awesome from them.

I recently found this coffee online and it is FANTASTIC. I grind my own whole beans. I brought in a lot of it in panic that maybe coffee supplies would dry up. I even have a back up hand-cranked grinder if power goes down. Camp stoves are also available and plenty of stored water...anything for the morning libation.

Check this stuff out:View attachment 7278078
Heh I work graveyard, I prefer a “morning” beer.

So...riddle me this...why do I prefer black coffee in the afternoon and coffee with creamer and sweetener in the morning?

But I do. I'm bracing for impact. Be gentle.
