While I do see the marketing strategy in this for the company's I am a little sick of the Zombie thing.

I think it was funny at first but now I see new people getting into firearms and they SERIOUSLY believe that zombies will attack them in hoards and they need every tactical looking POS add-on they can bolt to their rifle.

Now don't get me wrong, I have many range toys that are a ton of fun to shoot, but I don't see "zombies" on the way any time soon.

Economical break down, massive social riots, and hordes of UN-employed thief's and criminals looking for trouble? Now that is a senerio I would believe could be in our future, long before infected that want to eat my brains.

And maybe I'm totally off base here. If this is what it takes to get more interested in the shooting sports, so be it.

Metaphor. It's how I look at Max Brooks' books. If you read the first book, it's a simple conglomeration sendup of many of the survivalist books on the market like those of Ragnar Benson. A little thinly veiled, I thought. What's amazing is he does college tours based on his book and makes a pretty good living at it. His novel "World War Z" is being made into a major motion picture with Brad Pitt and a cast of millions of registered democrat voters [not a political dig, a humorous one, mods. cut me some slack here].

I think it's helpful to bring to light the concept that human life has value and is worth protecting and is a useful counter to the fabian socialist/progressive model which dictates personal value only insofar as it is useful to the state.

Looked at this way it's also acceptable: a general awareness raising exercise bringing more people into the "TEOTWAKI" mindset and getting more people into shooting sports is - almost - always a good thing, no?

It was fun until it got blown completely out of proportion. It is now possible to have a range trip where everything a person would bring to a range is bright green and says zombie on it. Zombie targets were cute and zombie ammo was funny, but now that it's so over the top, I would be ashamed to show up at range with anything zombie. They even have zombie airsoft.

It'll go great with my tactical bacon. The leupold zombie scopes put it over the edge for me. I somehow stumbled onto the brownell's ZEC and threw up a little in my mind. It's fun in movies and video games but I'm more concerned with the slightly more likely situations like civil unrest et al. If I can take out an armed person it should work fine against a zombie anyway. In any case, it's not going away because there's no shortage of dumbfucks in this world, especially in America.

That is, by far, the most important and beneficial thing about the Zombie Craze. Generally, it is a good thing when we have more people buying more guns. It grows the sport and it grows the lifestyle.

The secondary benefit is economic. If a company can paint something green or slap a biohazard symbol on it and sell another 87 units, that is great. The financial strength of Brownells, MidwayUSA, Stag, DPMS, Hogue, Ka-Bar, Eotech, Leupold, Mossberg, MTM et al. is important to ALL of us. The more units they sell, the more economies of scale they can realize. That may translate into more R&D, lower prices, more money spent on (or products given to) prize tables, and/or more support for groups like the NRA, the Boy Scouts, and state rifle/pistol associations.

I don't want shooting to be some super secret squirrel activity that a select few are part of. I want it to be as commonplace as football, baseball, NASCAR, traditional martial arts, and video games. The more prevalent (safe) shooters and (responsible) shooting are, the more "normal" it is. Normalcy would hopefully lift restrictions, ease access, and lower prices for all aspects of shooting.

I helped with the prize table at "Zombies in the Heartland: Pandemic 2012", a three-gun match that took place in June/July of this year in Grand Island, NE. Hornady was the title sponsor and we had dozens of companies support us with an approximate total of $160,000 in prizes. We had over 200 paid participants (tickets were around $250 or so), about 100 volunteers, and several dozen industry reps who came out to shoot the match.

We had people who had never shot 3-gun before come out for this match, lured by the "zombie experience". Many of these people loves the sport and said they were going to participate in local matches. Others learned about the strengths and limitations of their gear and abilities, making comments that they needed to buy a new rifle, or practice a little more.

I'm not a "zombie guy" and do find some of the zombie products to be a bit over the top, but the capitalist in me sees the brilliance in all of it and the shooter in me is happy to see more people buying and shooting more and more guns and ammo.

I do my best not to look down on someone because their favorite flavor of shooting is not my favorite flavor. I'm not into cowboy action, nor do I hunt. But I have no disdain for those who choose to buy cowboy hats and Mossy Oak overalls.
