Who's running 7/08

Re: Who's running 7/08

that is awesome to hear. I kind of guestimated that 2600 wouild be easily achievable. So you would say 2700 would be pretty easy to hit in say a 26" barrel. With the 162 amax or bthp that is some pretty damn impressive numbers as well as retaining a significant amount of energy to create easily seeable hits or misses

Re: Who's running 7/08

I hit 2680 out of a 22" barrel with 162gr. AMAX, I probably could have pushed it a bit harder but stopped load development in favor of bullets in the 140gr. range. 7mm-08 is a great caliber, you can't go wrong with it.

Re: Who's running 7/08

I've found barrels to be hit or miss on the 162s, so don't pin your hopes and dreams on them. The 168 Bergers and 175smk are both excellent.

While the 175 @ ~2600 certainly isn't as flat as the 162@2775 (2775 is my experience with 26" BBL), it drifts less and is supersonic to ~1400+ yards. Very easily tuned, too.

7-08 is awesome.

7 Creedmoor and 7SLR are other cartridges to look at, as well.

Turbo what do you think about running the 175s in a 1-9 barrel. Mine is a 26" so I was thinking of trying a box and seeing if I could get them to 2650 to 2700. I pushed the 162s past 2800 with no pressure signs but settled it down to 2725fps.

Should be good to go.

I think you'll get at least 2600fps, and probably better. However, I have only run them in a 284 so far.

Re: Who's running 7/08

Yes, I do. I run a 26" Shilen with a 1-8" twist on a Savage action, in a Choate stock. Velocity is 2700 with a 180 Berger on top of 46.1 gr. of RE-19. I was hitting at one mile with 168 JLK's and Bergers @ 2750 on top of 43.5 gr. of AA4350. Cases were lapua. Win LR primers.

My thing is using slow powders and a long barrel. I was totally surprised I got 2700 out of this barrel. But, I did. So, I keep the pressures low and continue to launch bullets at decent speed. Hopefully the barrel will last a really long time.

While I'm shooting the 7mm-08 Chuck is shooting the 6.5 Creedmoor. In retrospect both did pretty good that day.

Re: Who's running 7/08

This thread interests me. I am thinking of screwing on a 7-08 barrel but would like to see what sorts of velocity you all are getting with the 162-168's. Barrel length would be nice also!

If I can get the 168 bergers to 2750fps without hammering in a 24", I am pretty much sold!!

Cheers

I get 2750 because of the long barrel, slow powder combination. It's actually not a real high pressure load. I seat the bullets pretty deep too.

Re: Who's running 7/08

I had a bit of trouble working on a load for mine but eventually found a load that works all year long and is forgiving on the powder charge. Its slower than normal but consistent as hell. I have gone to 1000yds and back with plenty of range left in the scope.

150SMK
39.1 RL15
Lapua 308 Brass
2.810? I normally just use 580-585 on my Hornady seater.

Savage Target Action Repeater
Douglas XX 7mm-08
EGW HD steel 20 MOA rail
Nightforce 5.5-22 NPR1
HS Stock
Atlas bipod

All of this was put together before the lathe, mill, etc, and most was bought used on here and other forums. Actually, on the rail and the bipod were bought new.

I tried the Bergers, Hornadys, and Noslers, nothing shot better than the 150MK's. I have another load for the 150's with Varget but like the RL15 load better.

Good luck!
