I wear it so I don’t scare the shit out of the little old lady at the store, and make her feel comfortable being out of her house .
I wear it to share in the plight the millions of people that lost their income due to the governments forced closure of their business, in their desperate attempt to slow the spread.
I wear it to do whatever I can to chip in, even if it isn’t effective. It’s an emblem of caring about others besides myself, and that I am only one of many and not important.
I will continue to wear it regardless of mandates or not, because I believe it is my civic duty.

Last week was at a gas station in the middle of fuck to nowhere, in probably one of the reddest states in this country. Walked in to just quickly grab a drink and gtfo. Forgot to bring a mask that day, was spending the day outside and was in a hurry when I left the house. Old farm boy inside, probably in late 70s or early 80s - had a mask on. He didnt say anything to me.

But I could tell when he looked at me, it wasnt anger, but disappointment. made me feel kinda shitty tbh. And old dude and I are probably a lot alike, grew up round here etc...

Normally, I would just throw on a disposable surgical mask rq. Just didnt even think about it and had none with me anyways.

And there are civic duties that have nothing to do with govt contol. Id say voting fits in there... Others may disagree, thats fine. I am stern supporter of the slippery slope, btw.

The problem is that you're living a lie. For me, it galls me to live a facade. It makes my stomach churn, my head hurt and generally pisses me off. Masks DO NOT work. Respirators that are P, or R rated and oil resistant DO work. Also, the eyes are a an entry point for C19. The truth is that, without a vaccine, EVERYONE will get C19, eventually. C19 makes some people very ill and even kill some. So does the flu. CDC data shows it's nothing like the leftist media and politicians want you to believe.

It is my way of showing that I respect other people, that I want to reduce even the possibility of catching, or transmitting something to them. I don't need to argue over whether the masks are effective or not as I don't feel any desire to convince anyone to my way of thinking. I wear the mask because of the possibility, no matter how remote that it may reduce me catching or transmitting some contagion that I am not aware that I may have.

Much like the fire extinguisher I keep in my shop, kitchen, and garage...I hope I never have to use one and/or find out if they will work on whatever fire I may find..it is the same with masks. I wear it for the possibility it may help me, no matter how remote. For the same reasons, I wash my hands and take other precautions.

I don't even need to argue over how dangerous Covid-19 may, or may not be. I don't even want to catch a cold if I can possibly avoid it. So between the mask, washing my hands, disinfecting surfaces, blowing my nose, cleaning the soles of shoes when entering the house, and other precautions, my family and I have been fortunate enough to stay Covid-19, common cold, and flu free so far this year. I sure hope our "luck" continues.

Generally, the harder people work, and the more precautions they take, the luckier they seem to be. I hope our "luck" holds.

And I hope all the folks on this site also stay healthy.

Whether people wear a mask or not is their own decision. I really don't get wrapped around the axle over what someone else decides to do or not do. The choices I make are for me alone, and I don't feel a need to convince other folks one way or the other. While I hope everyone stays healthy, whether they live or die really won't affect my life all that much.

Wearing a mask now, is kind of like wearing a condom.. Prior to aides and herpes, most of the STI's people would get could be cured with common antibiotics, so there was lots and lots of raw-dogging sex. If someone caught something, they got antibiotics, or the shampoo that killed the crabs and it fixed things. Once the permanence of aides and herpes arrived, many people began using condoms to protect themselves. I see mask wearing as very similar.

The great thing about freedom of choice (at least so far) is that people can choose whether they want to wear masks, use condoms, have loud pipes on their motorcycles, and any number of other choices. The nanny state has removed freedom of choice to not wear seat belts when driving, and in some states removed the freedom of choice whether someone wears a motorcycle helmet or not.

I think the science on whether wearing masks is effective or not is a VERY LONG way from settled. I think the science about Covid-19 in general is a very long way from settled as they are still learning about it, and the virus continues to mutate. When/if a vaccine ever does come out, it will be a crap shoot whether it is effective on one strain of the virus, or if the virus will continue to mutate to the extent that any vaccine will become ineffective within days of encountering the vaccine.

Sure, I hope that an effective vaccine will be found, but I don't think scientists are anywhere close to knowing enough about the virus to create an effective vaccine, or to stop the virus from mutating into a new strains as soon as it encounters some vaccine or "cure".

To answer WinningDog's question about me wearing a mask before or after the virus, I refer to my comment about raw-dogging sex. I used to do plenty of raw-dogging, but wouldn't even consider unprotected sex with some new woman. As for wearing a mask later on, that would be based on whether I believed that a truly effective vaccine was found, and that the vaccine is safe. I sort of doubt we will ever truly be "rid of" the Covid-19 virus.

If a truly safe and effective vaccine can be found, they may be able to control the spread of the virus, but like smallpox, polio, tetanus, yellow fever, and many other diseases, a vaccine doesn't eliminate the disease, it just helps protect folks from contracting the disease. I will be surprised if they come up with a truly effective AND SAFE vaccine within the next year because of the way the virus continues to mutate into new strains.
