Basically they got their asses handed to them.
SA ended up under Boer rule until Mandela (a terrorist Black Nationalist, BTW) came along and convinced the retards that he was the second coming of Christ.

The best thing to ever happen to the British army was losing in South Africa. Having territory in Africa is like winning first prize in a shit eating contest.
It was one of the best countries in the world by almost all measures until the Apartheid government ended.

Nuclear weapons

High standard of living
World class sports teams
Excellent social programs
Etc etc....
