My new center feed .308 does a fine job, but my older style stagger feed .22-250 will, very often, pull the case out of the chamber then let go of it in the action. Apparently this is a common problem. Is there an extractor issue?

WTF Over!

Re: Why won't a Savage eject cases?

you are not alone i have a stevens 200 in 30-06. that dose the samething

. the stevens is just an old 110 with no accutrigger. its a great shooter, one hole group at 100 yards with my handloads. never shot at 200 yet it just a deer gun. most deer hunting in florida is 150 yards max in our area. savage or stevens thay both do it @ dont know why, like you say WTF over

New aftermarket style? Or just a factory replacement? The rifle I speak of has only had about 250 rounds through it, and it started this BS at round number 75 or so.

Common cleaning and/or wear issue in savages.

I'll clean before I replace parts. I failed to mention I was having this problem last week in the Texas Panhandle in 10 mph + winds with a drought striken landscape. The earth was getting into my rifle.

If your rifle is under warranty, call Savage and they will send you the parts to fix it yourself. The parts included the extractor, spring and detent ball.

Re: Why won't a Savage eject cases?

I had the same problem I changed out the bronze colored extractor with a factory one cleaned the bolt head and have had no problem.

Re: Why won't a Savage eject cases?

i had the same problem with my mod 12 in .223. I took apart the bolt head and cleaned it a few times.....no luck. Eventually i took apart the bolt head pulled out the Ejector spring and streched it almost double its origional length, and loaded it back into the bolthead. It gently spits brass out of the chamber with no problems now. YMMV

Remove bolt.
Put 1/4" allen wrench in BAS.
Put bolt/wrench on floor and step on it.
Remove BAS.
Slide up cocking sleeve.
Remove cocking pin.
Remove firing pin assembly.
Remove bolt head retaining pin.
Remove wave washer, front baffle, and bolt head.

Bolt is completely disassembled.

To strip bolt head(Inside gallon ziplock):
Push extractor toward center of bolt face.
-That will release detent ball and spring.
Drive out ejector pin
-That will release ejector and spring.

Bolt head is now completely stripped.

Re: Why won't a Savage eject cases?

Great info guys! My .223 does the same thing. I was thinking it was worn case rims, but apparently it's a savage thing. I will be pulling my bolt apart soon.

Re: Why won't a Savage eject cases?

Thanks for the info, apparently I'm not alone with this problem. I bought myself a savage edge in 223 for Christmas. Outstanding little rifle. 1 hole groups @ 100 yds with handloads are the norm since I got the barrel broken in and smoothed out the trigger a bit (edge does not have the accutrigger. I'm at work on a 24hr shift, but as soon as I get home I'll pull apart the bolt and give the tip a try.

Re: Why won't a Savage eject cases?

well i'll be damn, brake cleaner and a brush worked. i have always taken good care of my guns but never thought about a "gunky" extractor. mine was Bronze colored, a shot of brake cleaner and hit it with a brush now it works like new. i have found that brake cleaner works as well as gun scrubber for cleaning internal parts. & a lot cheaper what do yall think?

Re: Why won't a Savage eject cases?

I've used brake cleaner for years to clean guns. I am almost sure that gun scrubber is pretty much brake cleaner in a different can (and 2-3x the price), or something close to it. Just dont get brake cleaner on painted parts, it will dissolve some paints.
