ok i am new here but i have a real issue and hope someone can give me an answer i have a remington 700vtr 308 i have tried to use the brownells tactical picatnny rail to mount my scope my problem seems to be when you tighten dn the mount to 20ft lbs which is what they call for the bolt saftey or anything else wont operate if you loosen it then it wobbles but everything works fine i dont see any type of marks where it would seem the screws were to long and holding the action up from working any clues as to what may be going on

I'm no gunsmith, but are you sure the torque spec's are in foot pounds and not inch pounds (or inch ounces)? FWIW - You might want to consider posting this in the gunsmithing section.

Re: why wont my bolt work

Sounds like the screws are too long, try taking the scope rail off and start screwing it in little by little and try to work the bolt until it won't anymore then just back out the screw half a turn and measure how much longer it is and cut it own accordingly. It might not be much and be able to grind it a little for clearance. Good luck

Re: why wont my bolt work

Hey mate,

First of, its not "20ft lbs", its 20 INCH lbs. Make sure you have this right or you could damage something.

It sounds like you may have used the wrong screws in the wrong receiver holes. With the remingtons you need to use the shortest screw in the hole closest to the barrel, longer screws in holes as you head back towards rear of the reciever. However i'am not familiar with the "brownells tactical picatnny rail" and what it comes like, so maybe someone else can jump in.

Have you also removed the stock at anytime, or just putting the rail on?

cheers

Pete

Re: why wont my bolt work

thanks i will give those a try i also thought about the screws being to long but as i said the bolt assembly doent show any type of marks so i wasnt sure actually this is my first bolt action since i was a kid most of my rifles now are ars so it will be a work in progress thanks for all the help

Re: why wont my bolt work

nope never removed the stock i actully just had it arrive last firday and you may be right about swicthing the screws around will be my first try today as i belive i have the short sgrew at the back near the bolt and vice versa

Re: why wont my bolt work

The torque is 20"inch pounds as stated above. Also i would say your screws are to long. This is common. You may also have the mounting screws out of order as some are sometimes longer than others. short in the front and llong in the back. same rule as your action screws.
