The only thing that makes sense to restrict is rifle weight. Who would do better in a match if you had a clone? The clone with a 30lb rifle or you with an 18lb rifle?

leave it up to the MD to make a 30 pound rifle impractical. it's not that hard to do

the more we trend towards 'barricade benchrest' the more a 30 pound rifle makes sense

and i bet if you weighed the top 20 at the PRS finale the average will between 20-24 pounds anyways. and look what cartridges they are shooting. not all 6BR variants

Every other sport has placed restrictions on equipment for one reason or another. If I was at the top of the sport and I thought a super heavy rifle would improve my odds if winning, I would hump that heavy rifle through whatever I had to. It's already happened in this sport with 24lb rifles.

20+lb rifles are pretty impractical for anything other then our game of "barricade benchrest".

I wouldn't mind seeing it trend back. My 6BRA is 21lbs, and I'm starting to think that I wouldn't mind a lighter gun.

Well I just finished 4th at a 2 day NRL match yesterday with an 18lbs 25 creed lol and last 2 day match I ran a 23lbs 6BR and did terrible. I made the move to a lighter rifle because I can move faster and get to different positions faster. I prefer 18-20lbs guns after running 22+ Last season.

At the end of the day we’re playing a game. And the ultimate equalizer is wind anyway.
I beat a bunch of guys with much heavier guns shooting lighter calibers this weekend.

If you really want to discourage some of the heavy rifles, instead of weight limits just do more 90 second stages. Lots of movement and positions. That’s how I learned I wanted an 18lbs gun more than a 23lbs gun.
Now In all fairness I prefer those types of matches because shooting prone or modified prone is boring as fuck.

But I just want to highlight the point that you can still let people run what they wana run without making it a rules thing. I suppose weight classes as opposed to out right bans could be something to look into. But I don’t think we should ban certain things from what’s essentially a game.

We had a match director here that made you carry everything you brought all day long. And you started each stage with everything in your pack and wearing your pack. Made you think about what you really needed.

Match directors could certainly influence rifle setup with stage designs. Influence through implied advantage, not through regulations.

However I haven't seen much willingness to head in that direction. However, I've been out of the match game since pre-pandemic, so I could certainly be wrong. It just seems from my observations that the guns have only gotten heavier, not lighter.

MDs are going to go the way that fills matches and not going to start making people feel not wanted due to rifle weight. Things are where they are now but we will see if it changes in the future. The barricade BR will continue until people get tired of it and then it will change. Seems to happen from time to time.

And for the record my rifles are 16-18 pounds and always have been for the past 18 years of shooting matches. Just like it there.

Do you think the sport is big enough for weight classes? I suppose with the shooter base being small, it's best to keep everything "open", or have a sportwide restriction.

NRL hunter, Competition dynamics have both solved this. It's called natural terrain and movement on the clock.

Although I guess NRL Hunter specifically calls out weight classes too. Many stages still have 100+ yards of movement on the clock, and the 20lb guns are not fun to run with.

You look at someone like Phil Velayo and I know for a fact his gun also is only 18lbs. His white & red KRG W3. And he’s won a pretty good amount of matches.
I don’t believe giving Jake vibbert a 17lbs gun this past weekend would’ve made him not stomp us by 19 points.
At some point the practical and recoil difference hits a point of very steep diminishing returns. Like I don’t think a 23lbs 6BR or a 30lbs 6BR is gonna have a noticeable difference in recoil. Hell with the small 6mm’s and a good muzzle brake you’d probably have to drop down to something like a 10-12lbs gun to get anything that feels close to recoil.

Maybe bad wind calls, or sometimes you just don’t have a good match. These matches are 90% mental and you make 1 or 2 mental mistakes and you just start bleeding points. Something like the finale, if you drop 1-2 points per stage you’re so far behind you can’t make it up.
But if you actually pay attention to matches you’ll see all those guys have bad matches. 2nd AG cup vibbert didn’t even make the cut for day 3. First AG cup Austin didn’t do amazing. Hornady PRC last year or year before gadarzi did terrible. Happens to everyone.
