I just need some quick figures here guys. Here's the scenario.

A friend of mine (soon to not be) wants to sell to my cousin a rifle he picked up cheap. It's a winchester model 70, heavy barrel varmint in stainless chambered in .243. Unknown round count, hs precision stock and Timney trigger(supposedly, the guys a fucking constant lier).

Anyway, it did have a Leopold VXIII and and he wanted $1400 for the entire package. I thought it was a good deal because both, the gun and scope, are worth around $700 apiece. Now my buddy says the scopes not include and he's claiming just the rifle is worth that.

What I want to know is, how much is that gun worth in that setup (without scope) and in good condition. I feel like I could buy that gun new for $750. Does the winchester 70 varmint come with an hs stock?

How much is the scope worth?

What would you guys sell that setup for because at $1400, he's getting screwed. My friend mounted a winchester scope on it and didn't tell my cousin, now he's telling me the winchester scope is an awesome scope.

WTF

The new model 70 varmits I think come in a Bell & Carlson stock, but I do think they but some in the HS stocks also. I purchased a Model 70 coyote light in 243 with the laminated stock bull barrel for $550. Not sure if the trigger would kick the price to $750 but mine had a damn nice factory trigger in it about 2.5# and breaks like glass. I would shop gunbroker forthe same gun and see what others are moving for but I think it's a little high.

I look on gunbroker and not may to choose from but they all were running over $750 but I'm not shocked by that as everything seems high to me in the gun world still.

Do not pay 1400.00 just for the gun or it better have a bunch of work done to it. Them Winchester scopes are the biggest piece of junk. I would buy a tasco before one of those scopes. I would say 750.00 to 900.00 and it better be show room for 900.00.

My step dad just picked a Winchester M70 .243 with Shilen Match barrel and trigger work with a BS Pro Sniper stock from Maj. John Plaster for 800 off of gun broker. Don't know if this helps but seems high to me at 1400. The gun does shoot very well though...... easily 3/4 a minute and I have put two groups down off of sandbags and harris bipod at about .4 and .5 moa

Your "buddy" is living in a dream world! Bud's Gun Shop has a New M70, heavy fluted SS barrel, with MOA trigger, for $929.00, zero round count etc. Maybe, (as many sellers believe) your bubby believes because he owned it, and it's well broken in, it some how is worth more than a New copy! Walk away-buy new save $500, and buy the scope you want.

The Winchester scope adds "zero" to the value of the rifle in my opinion. Also being a 243, I would subtract the price of a barrel job since you have no idea of the number of rounds and 243 ain't easy on barrels. He may get a little life out of it but that is not a given. Since its a 243, it can re rebarreled to 260,7-08, 308 with nothing more than a new barrel. And playing musical scopes and prices I would just RUN away.
