Weatherby claims the prize for the fastest projectile as well as John Lazzeroni.


Since testing was done at altitude for Lazzeroni's fps should not Weatherby's be done the same.


After all....one owns the title,who is it?

I had a 30-378 that would launch 180gr bullets @ 3750fps with a 30 inch tube.

I'm not sure what the record is for the 30cal.

The Lazzeroni stuff was very practical and relevant when it came out. There were no 30 caliber short mags or anything besides Weatherby or Winchester in large mags then. I ran a Lazzeroni Patriot which was their short 30 mag. It was fast and a laser back then....that was maybe 15 years ago.

You are very close to where I live,at the house in Pipe Creek we are over run with them but there are too many homes and no back stops to thin the herd.

Spot on about them being a pest,they beatup/out the Whitetail because they can browse AND graze like a dam cow.

My place is near Junction and we hunt them at night too.

The pic below is from Hollywood Park,this buck and some even larger ones walk right past the Texas Trophy Hunters corporate office from where they live outside 1604 to the safety of the nieghborhood a week or two before opening day.

We've been able to make a dent in the population on my wife's family place in Fredricksburg. Night vision scopes have been very effective not to mention a ton of fun for Axis and hogs.

That's funny about that buck outside the TTHA head quarters. I pass by by there fairly regularly. It's almost like they know the seasons and boundaries.

I saw an experimental .50-20mm Lathi in the late 1970's near Omaha, Nebraska. The owner was working with a sabot design to shoot 30 cal bullets in it. The last I heard the Army had taken on the project and was topping 7,500fps with it in the mid 1990's.

That was in a 60 pound gun with ski's and wheels. I saw him shoot one round in the 50-20mm Lathi in it and his shoulder was black and blue for two weeks after that. Muzzle break technology was still in the WW II era at that point.

My dad reloads 30-378 for his buddy to save on cost, still really expensive though. That cartridge sends the 180 nosler partitions so fast it is damn near a kill anything in one shot round.

I prefer Berger 210VLD's in our's,they are double struck and do not foul the bore like other projectile brands do.

The increased speeds of the 30-378 needs the double struck bullet.

If you do some nifty google research, the 30-378 was designed for the army in 1959 for testing against armor plating, and they were shooting 80 and 100 grain bullets 6,000fps. I think thats faster then the lazzeroni. 110 grain 4,800fps, 125 grain 4,100 fps and 130 grain 3,750fps etc etc all the way to 200 grain. IM not lying or making it up, just look in the Barnes reloading manual # 3.

the Fps vary from barnes number 3 to number 4, probably due to powders changing and other stuff, like people using maximum loads in 110 degree weather, while shooting them like they are semi auto .22's and melting barrels, blowing things up and jamming bolts, stuff like that.

I shoot a 30-378, I like the 200 grain Accubonds in it. It will kill thing at some pretty long ranges.
I think the 30-378 really starts to shine when you use heavy bullets in it.

If you go by factory standards......... Lazzeroni is faster.... I shoot a sako TRGS in 308 warbird. Anyone that says its not practical, is crazy. Every round is practical if you have a specific need for it....... I had to put a Vias on it to be able to comfortably shoot it.

The 300 hulk is in between both..... probably uses the best brass in the world......Laupau......... and is the most accruate .308 caliber in the world (it did set the current world record at 1000 for its caliber)

The problem with 30 cal bullets in big cases is powder. The Pegasus holds more powder than both the 30-378 and the Warbird. The problem is trying to get powder with a very slow burn rate. You have to burn so much more powder to achieve very little velocity gain. Then barrel life is very short. I have dealt with the warbird and the weatherby and the warbird is faster mainly because Lazz loads to higher pressure. The Pegasus holds the most powder but velocity is about the same as warbird. Expect about 500rds of accuracy with any of the three. If a person reloads and wants to do a wildcat, go with either 30-375 Ruger(300 Accuracy International) or 300 Norma magnum. Both are very efficient and barrel life is alot better.

I built a .30-378 IMP probably 15+ years ago. It pushed the shoulder forward to give it 1 caliber worth of neck with a 35* shoulder. In a 30" barrel it would do 4100+fps with 150's, 3965 with 165's, and about 3850 with 180's. It would carbon foul like crazy but I was using WC872 ball powder in it. I think I shot 210 bergers about 3600-3650fps.

I have a Brno 602 built (about the same time) on a similar cartridge based on the 416Riby case. It has a 36" tube and will send a 180 at 3900+ (I pushed it to 4000fps, but the pressure was pretty extreme). the rifle has 280 rounds thru it and I don't expect it will live long enough to double that number

The extreme cartridges are lightning death to deer and other mid sized game, but the extra velocity doesn't seem to impress real large animals like Alaska/Yukon moose for instance...kills them fine, but doesn't floor them...Not much does tough.

It's sat that way for a lot of years so I finally ordered some Kroil to see if I can get it out. Some people use to use Bon Ami bathroom cleaner for it. I actually bought some but I couldn't bring myself to run it down a Hart barrel. I never actually shot anything with mine but paper. Now I have a need to try and vaporize a rock chuck so hopefully I can revive it.

I use JB bore paste and use it often.

Are you sure that is carbon fouling you feel?

My throat looks pretty scarey through a bore scope!

I'm not 100% sure but it's past the throat when the patch get's really tight. I don't have a bore scope to actually see what is going on. I do know that when the accuracy started dropping off rapidly is when I felt it.

which is the SAME as most of the Weatherby's including the 30-378, same as the Remington Ultra mags, & the 8mm Rem Mag ,,,,,

What about the raptor. It's formed from the excaliber. Perhaps a blow forward shoulder. I am not positive but 6mmbr.com had an article about it. I think it mentioned 200 grain accubonds around 3600 fps. Absolute hell on barrels though.

Thought we were talking about factory loads........ to the guy taht says Lazzeroni are 6k rifles.. I have owned probably 6 sako trgs in the warbird caliber and never paid over 1500 for one.

Here is why you need one. 23yr old boy (me) went on a hunting trip out west (Idaho). 6 old guys made fun of me and the other young buckaroo for our 300 magnums with those big fancy scopes........ everyone put in 200 for bigest elk and deer...... I was a broke college student so that hurt.... 2nd day hunting, a money winning deer stood across a small valley 450 yards........ These old guys had no bipod and standard barrel 270 and 3006 guns with 3x9..... no way to cross the valley to get a shot.. The back side of the mountain was in a diffrent state and a National Forrest... We where shooting in a pre arranged order and the first four old timers said no they did not want to complete the shot...... The guy in front of my used his Lazzeroni warbird with a high powered scope and bipod for a clean and ethical shot on a deer...... he won the money..... ever since then I have learned a 308 kills a deer dead the same way my magnum does at 300 yrds...... but not at 500 and beyond, no comparison. You can not go wrong with lazzeroni and its speed

Yah...Probably carbon.
Maybe even some layered carbon/jacket fouling....hard to say.
Give JB a try...I use it on a 6mmbr that shoots 0.1"s when I do my part/the planets align/wind is calm...I wouldn't hesitate on a cannon...Not for a second.

Bonami might have the odd oversized grit..IDK if I would use it. You wouldn't notice it in the bathtub, but Paul might shit himself if you told him what you did...lol!

get yourself a can of wipeout and spray it and let it sit for 24 hours, leave it, patch it out and spray it again for another 2-3 and wipe it again...if still dirty, spray it again and let it set for another 24

I've tried and your right Wipeout won't get it out. If the Kroil doesn't work I'll try some JB's. I read a article about a 6 MachIV years ago that they had the same problem and JB's wouldn't get it out. That is where there Bon Ami was discussed. Even though it is mild compared to comet it's way more aggressive than JB's or Flitz.
