Would You Buy a House Next to a School?

My mom lives next to a school, middle and elementary. Her house is situated such that there isn't a problem with traffic as her subdivision is on the backside of the school property. However, she can see the school and bus line from her back deck. Never had any problems but it is annoying that you can hear all the school announcements.

I have lived next to or near several schools over the years and my vote is hell no. The traffic alone makes it not worth it. I have been by high schools, middle schools and elementary schools. All have their own issues like the noise from sports and the traffic. I deal with enough traffic in day to day life. I hated having to deal with it leaving my house.

When it came time to find a new place I went out of my way to find one not remotely close to any schools and I am much happier now.

This guy is bang on. I live about a half mile from the school the kid goes to, so he just walks or rides his bike. But if the weather is shit or any other reason we need to drive him (the pathway crosses a creek and it usually floods over in the spring) it takes forever to get in and out of the school area. If you're around the house at all whenever school is getting in or out, you will hate your choice of buying right next to it. Loud mouthy teenagers, soccer moms driving like lunatics... And if it is a high school like you think, be prepared for shitty driving teens at all times of the day, even when school is out. I lived next to my high school and I remember people doing burnouts in the parking lot at night all the time. Unless this type of stuff is your thing, I would find somewhere else to live

Wow, lots of advice, thanks. Let me clear up a few things first though:

My property borders a school-middle school-rural-Trump country. Thing is the school is on a 40 acre chunk-of which almost all of it is baseball fields. Basically my house borders a field. As far as guns and stuff I load and unload in garage specifically and don't advertise etc. Funny I've been there 15 years and never really thought about it until recently.

This is more what it'd be like. It's at the far back corner of the school property where they do sports practice. Even that was a couple hundred meters in and away from the road. The school itself lies on another, busier street and is about 500m away, give or take, from the house. So it sounds like I'd be in the exact position as the guy above.

I'd NEVER consider one next to or across from a school, I get that, wouldn't even be asking. This one is more of a gray area I feel.

Ignore all the issues related to your shooting hobby, just for the moment. Go check out the traffic around a school at arrival or dismissal. Since no one rides the bus anymore, you've got a bazillion cars zipping around every morning and afternoon - most of which are giant mommy-mobiles being driven by distracted parents. I see it every day around my kids' school, and there is no way in hell I'd want to live amongst that sort of chaos.

I actually looked at this house around 2.30=3.30 so I got to see it all. There actually wasn't much traffic really, if anymore than usual (there's no access to the school at that end and it's fenced off). A few kids were walking home, kids don't walk these days so there wasn't many and the few there were were buried in their phones. Anyway, they all looked like good kids from what I saw. It wasn't loud, there wasn't a bunch of kids this far back from the school.

Apparently the area is more pro-firearm than you'd think, or at least that's all I've run into so far. It's a smaller town off the beaten path, not in a big city. A big town is closer to the truth I guess. Both realtors I spoke with are into firearms and a guy I spoke with at the VFW who is well connected said as much about the town. This kids think of it as "backwards" which may work in my favor.

I just don't have a lot of options and may have to choose this one anyway. Been looking for months and it's not like I"m pulling up anything better. It seems all of you that do or have lived near the back of a school don't have issues, those that live in front, different story. I lived across from one when I was younger, and my grandmother never had problems there for 50 years. But she didn't have an arsenal in 2019 either.

So far EVERY house has SOME issue, most are either falling off a cliff or need massive overhaul work on the exterior, some are outright dumps, all for the same price, so finding one with a school cadi corner that's in A1 shape almost feels like a godsend at this moment. But trust me, I'd RATHER have something off the beaten path that fits my criteria.

I was thinking about that though, not that I have kids but pedos make me sick and that'd be one neighborhood without 'em, back side of the school or not. Not a requirement but it's a perk I guess.

I think the biggest thing you will have to worry about is the school then, judging off this information. Liberal teachers who find out about the guns would be a problem. I live in Alberta, which is a very conservative province. I am also in a small city, right outside of a big city. You would think it would be a bit more progressive, but I was proven wrong recently. The boys class had a debate over climate change, and the oil and gas industry, which is big here. It turns out some parents came in to talk to the kids about it, and they all work in oil and gas, so there was plenty of info they wouldn't have otherwise received from their teachers. My point is, if your neighbors understand your way of life, and live that life, they will be your allies. My neighbors see me leaving the house with my rifles in their cases a lot and no one has a problem, and there are kids around all the time.

Oh, sorry. Had surgery, been laid up. Since Monday that house has gone pending and now back on the market. Can't find out why it didn't sell? Still thinking about it... Houses come and go but at some point I have to pull the trigger and the general trend is gonna be for them to keep going up in value. Despite distance from Seattle and Portland it's still centrally located and also close to the beaches as well as being the last place sort of along the I5 corridor where real estate isn't at damn near Hong Kong prices.

Okay, anyway, with shit the way it is today I figure it may be better if (local police) heard from the owner before hearing from some panty wringer who "saw a gun" and freaked the fuck out. It being near a school can only make shit worse I imagine and a friendly "hi, I'm your neighbor" sort of call couldn't hurt. If there's gonna be a shootout it'll be at their behest anyway. I'm about as "just wanna be left the fuck alone and don't care about your business" as they come.

Because at SOME point SOMEBODY will see "the big shit" (an M2HB, imagine the horror) get loaded up in the truck and in some wacko-conspiratorial-watches-too-much-propaganda mind, they'll see a guy loading up to go shoot up, say, the school across the street vs. say, a bunch of milk jugs on BLM (my) land.

As for security, well, let's just say the cops, the feds and the army all seem to have a harder time hanging onto their shit than I do.

On the other hand, I'd rather not divulge any of it. It's nobody's goddamn business but mine. I don't plan on informing neighbors of shit unless they wind up being like my current neighbor, who is basically my QRF if I ain't around and has more rifles than I do.

That's a damn good point. I'll go research the school a bit. I'm not from the area so I couldn't say, all I can say is it's not Seattle and that so far everyone I've met owns firearms. And they have an active VFW (the kind that serves dinner nightly and sells import beer, for get this, ONE dollar!). It's a bit run down, it's an old fishing town and it DOES NOT attract youth --this is the kind of place kids wanna leave. It's definitely gotta be an improvement, politically, from where I am now. The school is the only wild card. But really, what would be the difference if it was the next street over? Or the next zip code? I'm just reaching I guess... It's a big decision and I only have one shot at it.

Too bad you can't just call 'em and ask, yeah? "Hey, you guys mind me moving in with an arsenal?" In this day and age they should just be glad that piece of property isn't being bought by a pedophile. But hey, priorities, right?

The one super sucky thing about it is I won't be able to shoot .22's in the yard. That's been my lifesaver when I wanna pop off a few rounds or just plink some cans but can't do better or go anywhere. And I gotta remind myself that despite red flag laws and other bullshit, we also leglaized SBR's and suppressors a couple years apart a few years back and if that ain't progress of sorts I don't know what is.

Well, turns out this place is in the only county in W.WA to vote for Trump and that most of them are basically 2A voters, don't really like Trump... Told 'ya I thought it felt different there, politically it's a step in the right direction from where I'm at. And I've yet to meet someone who doesn't own firearms, half of them admitted to carrying, let alone an anti.

Place went back on market too so maybe I'll get another shot. Certainly haven't seen a house this nice for the price in over 3 months and I can always sell it down the road if I have to.

I lived across from a school for 15 years. It was an okay neighborhood. Never had a problem except the parents on parent teacher nights parking in front of my driveway. Just don't be an asshole about taking your guns in and out of the house. No one ever noticed.
