These trucks do the job for me. These two ‘97 Fords have served me well for over 350,000 miles around the farms. Both 460, 5 speed manual transmission, lock out hubs. The grey one is now retired. It’s a F250 and the black one is F350.

I our world if you were driving a chevy all the local recovery phone numbers were in your phone, they sat that low off road. The Dodges needed a trailer to haul all the parts that fell off, with a extra set of brake parts in the trailer as well. The Fords had consent engine problems. The bulk of our trucks had service body's an most had 8-12K lb of generator or other type of trailer behind them all the time. Off road Cell sight/EPG work, will test a truck real quick.
I’ve got a 2011 f-250 with the 6.7 I bought in November of 13 with right at 50k it now has over 460k with very few issues, another buddy of mine has a 14 f-250 with 295k on it and all he’s done is replace a radiator. This is not including regular wear and tear such as tires and brakes and such, we service drilling rigs all over and put these trucks thru Hell, I’ve left mine running non stop for days before as I was sleeping at the rig in it at times in freezing weather or 110 degree weather. I also have a 2011 Cummins with 298k on it and it has been an excellent truck with just a lift pump change and recently put a new alternator and batteries in it, my son has been driving it for the last yr and a half.
We blew up a 6.4 with 208k recently but that’s the only catastrophic engine or transmission failure anyone can remember. The modular gas engines had a lot of ignition stuff that was a pain but that’s gone. Going forward we will be buying the 7.3L gas engines. You can buy a lot of gas for the price of buying and maintaining a diesel.
The company my cousin works for is moving to the new 7.3 gas motors, I’m curious to see the fuel mileage on them, I’m a contractor so mine is my personal vehicle I’ve deleted all my diesels fuel mileage is great compared to some buddies running gassers, and the power from the diesel is just so much better, I honestly don’t think I’ll ever buy another gas 3/4 or 1 ton truck.
You have to ask is the $9,500 price over the gas, plus increased operating costs, plus fuel that is $0.40 a gallon more worth the power. I suspect for most it is not. The Diesel has become a status symbol that most don't even come close to using to potential.
I hear a lot of people saying "yea but what MPG will it get" regarding the new 7.3 gasser. Who gives a shit. MPG is only one of the cost factors, I have no idea why people focus on it so much. Cost per mile is what needs to be observed over time. With that, the gasser will win. It didn't used to be that way, 19 years ago when I got my diesel it could be mathematically proven to be a cheaper option.
I love my 7.3PSD but I wouldn't replace it with a diesel currently. Just wait until the electric trucks make it to market in about 10 years. 1000ft lbs is child's play for an electric motor.
I am no Tesla fan but it has been proven many times over, cost per mile of a Tesla is about 1/6th that of a gas powered sedan. Electric is the future no doubt, and at that point diesels will be the first to go to the crusher like the big block muscle cars back in 1974.
MOST (but not all) will do that if you just do one thing...CHANGE THE OIL REGULARLY. If it has grease tits, grease it at each oil change. Using a high quality synthetic like Amsoil helps, and of course the occasional tune up. First new vehicle I ever bught, and 1987 Toyota p/u with 22R engine went 375K and started everytime I turned the key. My 2002 Chevy 3500 Express Van had 275 K with no major problems...Change the Oil.
I used to run diesel Mercedes but when you figure in the extra cost for the diesel, and not the uric acid additive (which you may not need in the trucks), plus the extra cost and maintenance, it just isnt worth it. Then theres the turbo lag. Give me a good American sedan that runs on regular.
Understandable but most gas engines are wore out around 200k and in my line of work that would take 3-4 yrs and the truck wouldn’t be worth much compared to a diesel with 200k on it and I’m not one to buy trucks every couple of years. There are tons of people running around in diesels just because they want to and have no need for it. I understand they are more up front but I do the majority of my maintenance so I save some there I just think the longevity and reliability is better with the diesel. No doubt electric will be big when it gets to where it needs to be, I don’t think it’s there yet, atleast not for me I would need more mileage then the 3-400 mile range just because of the driving I do. The power of the electric cars is definitely impressive though especially the Tesla semi truck prototype, and the cost compared to gas or diesel will be great being you just plug it in no more fuel, but when that day comes I’d probably be out of a job as I do electrical work on oil rigs lol
If a guy wore out a modern gas engine in 200 K, either he beat the shit out of it, didn’t maintain it, or both.
The only real issue the the Taco is it still has drum breaks on the rear axles. That, to me, is crazy in the year 2020. They had some excuse for it but I lost a bit of respect for them.Toyota Tundra and Tacoma for the win
I’m about to dump my Sequoia for either another newer one or a series 200 LC. But since I plan on very sparingly trailering a car or sure I like the tiny wheelbase of the LC even if it does weigh almost three tons.
Get a little bad fuel in a diesel pickup and it will cost you big. We lost two because of it over the last seven years. Replaced an engine in one and the complete fuel system in the other if am remembering right.
if you are hooked up to a trailer most of the time then by all means get a diesel. Other than that a gasser is usually the way to go.
Some of the big displacement gas engines offered in the 3/4 and one ton trucks with 4wd really do suck on mileage though. My previous work truck was a Ford F250 four door 4x4 and I would average less than 10 mpg unloaded. I burned a full tank on a long trip running freeway speeds. Knocked out damn near 11 mpg on that one. The diesel trucks we switched to are all dodge ram 2500 four door 4x4 and average right at 16 mpg.
You want horsepower or fuel mileage. Pick one.

I did not say a diesel does not have a place, it sounds like you actually use/need one. Around here everyone (almost anyway) has a turbo diesel in their driveway. If you averaged out the usage of these soccer mom trucks over there life it would be about equal to going to Lowe's and getting two bags of salt everyday. Most only tow anything over 10,000lbs 2 times a year. Around here they are a status symbol, if you are a man and do not own one you are looked down upon.
When those get hit with a $4000.00 plus repair they shit themselves.
No I get exactly what your saying we have a ton of guys running around in diesels towing John boats around here, and yes they all have there place. When I started this job I had an 05 lariat f150 4x4 it was a great truck but as time went by and I started carrying more tools and loading up 100hp electric motors it really took a toll on the tranny and rear end which is why I went with a 3/4 ton. I did have to put an injection pump in it that was costly of course I did get right at 400k out of it so I knew something would come up like that eventually and there was another f250 there for the same reason that was a younger kids truck that had been sitting because he was trying to gather money for the repair like you stated.
For sure, and it’s getting harder to delete them, both of mine are deleted and it makes a lot difference.
It’s not the oiled engine components that are issues typically. It’s axles, bearings,electrical, etc.
I was religious with maintenance and was downright fanatical about letting nothing but Chrysler ATF into the transmission.
I worked for five years as the engineering manager at a Japanese company that did OEM transmission remanufacturing for Honda Service Parts. Outside of a few design defects on their 1st gen 5 spd ATs, Honda automatics died because someone either never changed the ATF or did so with something not meant for Honda transmissions.
As auto transmissions became ever more advanced the additive package and overall ATF formulation became critical to function, particularly with regards to clutch engagement and valve body performance. Once clutches begin to slip, you're fucked. A new or reman trasmission is in your future.
The days of generic ATF or using Dexron in everything were over 20 years ago.
I remember the CIVIC transmission was awful in terms of reliability back in late 80s / early 90s. That’s the one thing I don’t like Honda on. However since they still use gears instead of that rubbish CVT I would go that route. I like Honda dispire abysmal styling on a lot of their product (they are fixing that...and better than Lexus front grill).
My pops had a 1986 Chevy C-10 work truck with a 4.3L V6 and I think a TH350...it was north of 500k on original drivetrain when he retired it.
I had a 1983ish Ranger in College. It was an awesome truck. Four cylinder, standard shift. Perfect little truck!

When lazy plastic people are driving the market, they sell what the market wants.
Honda ATs today are a mix of geared and CVT. Just depends on the model and trim that you buy. You can still buy several, including the Accord, with a manual transmission (FUCK YEA)
I've had cars from the following companies: Honda (2), Porsche (1), VW (2), Chrysler (2), Volvo (1), and Toyota (1). My current daily driver is a 2010 Fit Sport. It has 235,000 miles and going strong. Zero repairs until after 195,000 miles and then after they have been minimal. I will never buy any vehicle unless it's made by Honda or Toyota.
My first vehicle was a 70 model Toyota Hilux. It was a bare bones truck. It had that 8RC 4 cylider engine in it that was almost impossible to destroy. I bought it for $200 in 1977. I sold it in 1996 for...$200...to my insurance agent.
I don't think that is correct the F150 is not the same size as the F250 or F350.
that's not new haven't they always competed against each other . what's the debate this time which car company used the more foreign labor or parts ? all of them should be able to claim that top prize , should be one is 1/2 ton 250 one is 1/4 ton 150 and maybe 1 ton 350 .

I’ve had VW, Porsche, Honda, Toyota and Ford in the last 28 years. Best built - Porsche (as in built in West Germany) and Sequoia. Worst..Ford. My ancient accord had a cracked piston and still drove like a champ. No roughness or anything. Probably would have been best off driving it like that.
But zero joy in driving a Honda or Toyota..very clinics. Damn good cars. But clinical.
What is surprising is Hyundai? Leading me to ask...is it engineering or assembly where “Big 3” seem to go awry?
Since the advent of CAD, model-based design and metallurgy/mechanics of materials the computer has evened out the market so much that if one cannot get 100k-150k from gasoline engine they have either been tracking the car or just outright abuse and no maintenance.

My reason for posting is to ask WTF with the sizing of trucks.
My most favorite vehicle ever was my 2002 Ford Ranger, FX4 Level II, standard transmission 5 speed.
Not my actual truck but what mine was....
It was great fun.
It was also a size suitable for urban areas. I could take it in the city and park it. I sold it when I needed to get dual child seats in my car and traded this for an extended cab, four door F150. Hated the F150 for its "Yugeness" in my constrcted AO.
Just saw a reintroduced Ford Ranger.
Fucker looks as big as an F150 and new F150s look bigger again.
Looking to me like the Jeep Gladiator might be my choice if I ever want to get into a smaller pickup type truck.
Is Ford retarded for making the Ranger and F150 basically the same vehicle?
What if I told you the Toyota Tacoma was the best selling mid sized 4x4 truck for a reason? This is why the ranger, and the gladiator came out. To compete to the Tacoma. Which has more American parts in it then the Fords Lol.
I know I sound crazy. I just wish trucks were made a size in between the midsize and the full size. New F-150 and Sierras are so freaking huge and the Ranger/Tacoma/Colorado are just a tad too small.

Good luck finding anyone in a shop that knows how to do anything with a point distributor or carb. I think in my county there is 1 maybe 2 garages with a mechanic that knows how to work on them. It's in the shop I deal with when I dont have time to or specialty tools I don't have.. Someone had an old truck that they had bought towed in to get running. Took my buddy a while to figure out where his tach and dwell meter were buried.
Read the first sentence. Same size or CLOSE. For 30 years they used the EXACT same body. From 97-2015 the F150 Diverged as a seperate "brand" so to speak. In 2015 the F150 got redesigned and in 2017 the 250 and up got the F150 cab. As the F150 cab was bigger/roomier than the previous f250 up, and the cost of designing and producing 2 different cabs was becoming an issue inside FOMOCO.
The only real difference in physical size is the length and that is mostly due to bed sizes between 150 and 250 up. from 60's through 1995 the F150 shared cab, doors, fenders, hood and grill.

What if I told you that the Ranger dominated the small/midsize truck market until they stopped making them in 2012. Only then did Toyota take hold. Ford relaunched the Ranger in response to a growing midsize truck market. They just screwed it up in the looks dept.
The new Rangers are fuggly, and any of today's vehicles aren't designed to last like they used to. Modern emissions regulations and a market that demands the manufacturer build a rolling entertainment center are driving the industry unfortunately. People are lazy, and they can't even be bothered to use mirrors anymore.
There also seems to be a trend where they all copy one another with the same basic look of the SUV, CSUV jelly beans, and truck market.
I’m mixed on this. Seems like discs are the right direction but my 02 Tacoma has 300k on it, and the rear brakes have never needed servicing. Original shoes and wheel cylinders. As far as I can recall the e-brake has never needed adjusting. Hard for me to argue with that.
If you told me that, then I’d rebuttal the past is the past. No one should care about what ford was doing 8,10, 15 years ago if in the market for a truck today. They stopped making them because sale decline. They were planning such since 2008. Perhaps not their fault, it was probably a combination of economy and or the need for full sized trucks. Mazda was making their overseas rangers.
So Toyota maintained sale despite of the market that was difficult with the 2nd gen taco’s. Ford sold about 19,000 rangers in 2012, the Tacoma’s corporate sale report was at 141,000. The best sales that I can find was in 2018 at 245,000 Tacoma’s.
Now a days it’s hard to compete with the reputation of reliability, and off road features you get with a truck like this. Or as they say, innovation, while keeping it simple. Although there’s always something to bitch about. Some was corrected in the 2020’s that were just released. Torque is a little low, but you can YouTube things that people do in these trucks, and way less money then the rubicon gladiator. Which is probably 1 of 2 comparable trucks in class. I’d say the other would be the Chevy zr2 bison would be the other.
It’s to bad ford won’t sell the ranger raptor in the US. I’d bet they’d sell those.
They got a 2.3? L eco, or in some places there is a 2.0 twin turbo diesel. Naturally if you’re into off-roading the diesel will put down more torque, but idk. I can’t imagine that the turbo would be a long lasting engine in a diesel, idk, I’m not a vehicle engineer.
From 84 to 87 the rangers an Bronco II's could be had with a 4D55 Mitsubishi Engine. It was a 4 cylinder turbo with a oil cooler, as well as piston coolers. Even though the injection pump was timing belt driven those engines gave very long service life. They gave 34-37 MPG would out run or pull 4.0 rangers when they came out, an just ran. The same engine could be had in the dodge d-50 in 83-85. I had one in a Dodge an one in a ranger both, both went past 350K miles with very little issue. I removed both engine an over hauled them a reset the pumps to a 5% droop an they are still running down in Fla powering gen-sets. Tough little engines that were drawing boarded for fork lifts. If they would have been DI instead of PC engines that would have only been better, but the G/plugs never gave issue.
Around here points an carbs are second nature, although you have to travel a ways if your looking for a Distributor machine if re-curving. I/most do them on the engine, just takes a little longer. With O2 sensors, rejetting an carb tuning is easy, an a wheel dyno makes that easy.

I'd love to see a vehicle built with fenders again. Won't happen when it gets in the wind tunnel and destroys the EPA goals the of the manufacturer.
Remember when Dodge first restyled the Ram and gave the impression of fenders? It was a great look. Even the PT Cruiser gave the impression of the antique fender front end and caused a stir.
Wish the govt would get out of mandate mode and let manufacturers manufacture.
Give me the 1940 Ford pickup. It was probably smaller than Ranger size and would do everything I need a truck for with style.
