I tend to think the hard treatment is sometimes a way the group self regulates and guards against the stupidity from becoming a permanent resident. People who have been in many tough spots or who have lived a life where distractions are deadly have no time for bullshit. Ditto people who are professionals and trying to share or promote their craft. You want someone who will be nice to you when you trip all over your dick, don't reel in your neck or continue to poke the bear? I'm sure the Gardening Forum still has a free signup.

There's a certain amount of new guy-itis that has been lost on the internet.
By that I mean, traditionally, the new guy gets the you have one mouth but a set of eyes and ears speech.
It's so you can observe and listen twice as much as you speak or ask questions.
New guys should observe for a while, ask questions when they can't find the answer, and gradually be brought into the fold.
If you can't be bothered to look for the answer to your question before asking, or you've already made the decision and you're seeking validation, I think a certain amount of ridicule and 'piss off' kind of comments are warranted. Like the askholes that buy an IOR and then get upset at the answer when they ask if it was a good purchase.

Yup. People are lazy. The entire internet is here to do research. Look, read, then ask intelligent questions. “I don’t understand” is fine. “Help me tie my shoes, wait, just do it for me. Give me the answers to the test”, not so much.

No. I'll give you an example..16 yo from UK with a new post on a Sunday morning that he wants to be a sniper...there was already the 3,2,1 countdown, the perfunctory Bambi eating popcorn, and just prior to a full on assault you came to his defense - "Leave him alone" Pretty damn patient. If you have a stupid question - post it in the stupid question or basic marksmanship thread. No-one should be criticized for posting or asking questions there - it should be a safe zone for newbies or perpetual weak links. Predators stay out of that thread if you have nothing nice to say or contribute. Having been away for a while, and recently back, kind of sad to see some of the regulars gone. There are some I can't believe are still here - Maser took shit from almost everyone every post for a good 2 years and was told on a daily basis to leave. I think he was in high school back then and now he is married and hardly anyone berates him anymore. Definitely a different tone here but not from Lowlight...just some people really hammering other for I don't know what real reason. The political arena and BS brought out the worst in several individuals, esp. directed to the liberals (or trolls) which IMHO don't have a friggin clue how their rights will be affected now and the ASGH folks that hopefully are woke that S*** already Happening... I'm gonna say something that may get me in trouble ... I don't think the moderators are either enough in number or doing their job. Tucker, Rob01, & Mike together handled probably 70% of banning on the old days...Lowlight almost never got involved unless it was something like pink in the motivational thread. Back then one warning was usually enough... if anything LL has been too patient with this three warnings before banning sh*t. And really, why would anyone care if they were banned? I mean I saw him post HOW many times he didn't want to hear complaints about price gouging? For now we still live in a free market society and one post by him should have been enough? If the price of something is too high, don't buy it and find it elsewhere. And If you take getting banned from here that seriously that you want to ruin the site you need to just get a life.
Maybe this site needs to increase the number or quality of moderators - because seriously with over 100K members plus the lurkers, plus watching for any political tone issues now, LL shouldn't have to be watching every thread and every post. And some of you guys seriously shouldn't get your panties in a wad so easily every time someone has a criticism or joke. Some of the personal vendettas needs to be settled privately...you should be able to pull up your big boy pants and stop acting like you're in junior high. If you really can't stand someone put them on ignore.
In case you didn't appreciate it, running a site this big is a huge PITA. Do you know LL has to have a lawyer on retainer for this site? They ain't free..Just for the he said/he said stuff and IDIOTS that just like causing problems and sue him for other people misbehaving or misrepresenting things that should have been banned or not allowed on here. And he has to deal w/advertisers, vetting new members, upgrades/site changes with volume, etc. etc. too. He has a life too ya know, instructor, keeping up with everything new in the PR world, reviewer of products (yeah sometimes thats cool he gets free or reduced prices), fending off babes, Podcasts, organizing competitions, saving the free world - alot of stuff. And people nitpick over bans? What have you done for him lately? A fruitcake? SMH.

I’m a new guy here and as such, I try and follow the unwritten rules of new guy behavior, even though I have a decent 34 year career, kids and grandkids. I have my share of what I feel have been less than impressive posts and if an educational dressing-down was warranted, I would’ve appreciated the lesson. Been there before as the new guy.
I enjoy SH for many reasons and probably spend more time on this site than is healthy. So much so that my wife asks me me if I’m on “Hypers Snide” again, because she could care less about getting the name right and she likes to bag on me. Love her.
My fear is that one day, LL is going to wake up, fed up with the BS of it all, tell us to F-off and pull the plug. He more than anyone, understands what this website means to us all I’m sure, but I can only imagine what a huge responsibility and absolute pain this all is. If a little immediate, decisive, corrective action is needed in some instances to maintain standards, I’m on board.
If you make a fuckup, just take it on the chin.

I'm a newguy, and a foreigner, AND one of my guns is a creedmoor. The welcome new members thread was friendly. My stupid marksmanship questions were handled patiently. When I said something helpful I got a thumbs up. I keep my nose out of the political and 2a stuff because I have no skin in the game.
All of which is to say the forums aren't inert and consistent. You get responses appropriate to your contribution so if you don't like what you're getting perhaps try harder to ask better questions.
HOWEVER as/if this is a business... You might be missing some easy dollar teaching simple shit to new guys. One size most likely will fit all so you could run a cookie cutter programme quarterly. If you want to make the site new guy friendly, I'm happy to talk about how.

A long time ago, I was a Pilot Selectee in my ANG unit doing some student flight stuff as an E-3 prior to AMS. A former Marine First Sergeant ran the StuFlt.
One day he and I were having some friendly conversation and he asked if he could give me a piece of advice for when I commission. I said “Of course!”
“Listen to your NCOs because they’ll know more than you as a Lieutenant, and never miss a good opportunity to shut the fuck up.”
I ended up with a medical disqual, but that latter piece of advice has stuck with me...

I always thought it was the military backgroud that breeds a kind of no-nonsense attitude. I don't hold it against you, and actually appreciate it, even when given a taste of it. You have to be able to accept it too.
That kid from the UK ended up being treated very well and if anything in that post caused his psyche irreparable harm we have saved the taxpayers of the UK from having him washout day one of training.
The shit people gave @Maser pushed him off his path to perdition and made him the outstanding person he is today.......a request for more discipline and abuse would seem to be in order.
