Make sure your firearms are insured (independently) and then place in a pecican case, then the pelican inside a cardboard box...add tons of tape and then ship UPS. I have done this about 6 times with no problems or damage. The cardboard box takes a beating, but never had rifle or optics hurt a bit. The pelican's do their job quite well.

I've found that even flying out of a 'threat paranoid' airport like JFK, it is not much of an issue. I get there super early, just for my own peace of mind...

I have a hard case with wheels and use double, like keyed Master locks to secure it. TSA locks are a NO NO! I also remove the bolts & run cable locks through the actions to keep TSA and/or the NY Port Authority Police at ease...

BEFORE my stuff is checked, I have my ID ready and a big poop eating grin on my face as I explain what sticks are in the case and that the bolts are removed and actions cable locked.

Sometimes TSA requires my ammo to be secured in another checked bag, sometimes it stays in the case proper. Whatever they want is what I do, 'cause I want to use my sticks & ammo when I reach my destination!

I did have my case not make a transfer flight once and had my ballz in my throat for 11hrs 'til the case was deliverd to my doorstep that night. I try my darndest to fly DIRECT when travelling to kill stuff, but sometimes that just isn't an option...

NO TSA LOCKS

TSA keyed locks on firearms cases are a violation of FAA regulations.

I use combo locks because I hate to keep track of keys, but don't give your combination to a TSA agent unless he is opening the case in your presence.

I'm running a pair of American Lock 5200 series, keyed alike, on both of my Storm cases but each pair are keyed different.

Neither are set up for a master key.

To get the key out of the lock you have to lock it again.

One thing I have learned from flying with checked firearms is to print out a copy of the TSA and FAA regs and keep them with you. More than likely it won't help with the new guy that wants to argue with you, but it will help with his supervisor.

I also photograph the contents including cloeups of the serial numbers and other markings. I load the pics on a thumb drive and also carry them with me. They will help if you have to report them stolen.

Correct. I had an expensive item disappear and they basically told me to pound sand because I didn't have a receipt for the item.

Most locks can be bump picked or cut off. An Asa Abloy Grade 6 (PL362) raised shoulder padlock with a Protec cylinder cannot be. It would be all but impossible to cut the lock off, easier to breach the case, and the lock cannot be bump picked. There have been claims that the lock has been picked, but none has been substantiated. Anyone who could pick such a lock would be after far more than $10k to $30K of guns.

The lock is somewhat hard to find, and not cheap, &#61627; $250.00, but it will keep the bad guys out, including misguided TSA officials. Once it on there…. Two sources for the lock are:

I use one in a high-risk application and I have no evidence that anyone has even tried to pick, break or otherwise open it.

From my perspective, stolen guns represent an emotional and financial loss and a headache I will pay a premium to avoid.

I know the last time I flew with my rifles to go hunting in WY I made sure they understood that I would be coming for their asses if they lost or stole my rifles. The lady told me that the bags are all insured for $3000 through the airline and I wouldn't have to worry about it. Like that was gonna make me sleep better on the plane. She also tried to get me to sign a piece of paper that she said was standard for flying with firearms (which I know it is not) that basically said that it wasn't their fault if they lost it. I said no thank you and put the paper in my pocket and walked thru security.

Quick question, not to hijack. But I have read through this and see where people talk about shipping guns through ups? I thought ALL firearms had to be shipped ffl to ffl? Or is that only for transfers? Can you send firearms through UPS without any ffl interaction?
