Exactly. Someone with some sense.

It always makes me laugh when people talk about whatever round being good for if the "shit hits the fan" because its common and they'll be able to just "get" more. If the shit actually hits the fan, what you have is what you have, there will be no gun shops and internet to buy shit from.

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

I do not have one, nor do I want one.

ETA: If I want 308 performance, I will donwload the '06. For some reason though, I have yet to desire more wind drift.

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

Bottom line is there are far better rounds including the 243, 7-08 and 260 which all were created off the 308 parent case, but to answer the question "do you need it"...thats completely up to you.

Exactly!! I think that's where to start even if the SHTF doesn't happen.

And those are the cheapest to shoot and to reload. </div></div>

i would also add if you worried about shtf situation (which i am definetly not) u should also have an ak 47 or something that fires 7.62x39 and something that shoots 7.62x54 because there are millions of rounds of those 2 in the states and the rifles are cheap as shit but ridiculously reliable. </div></div>

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

they are a great round to get into shooting with, very forgiving. Are there calibers that are going to prefom better, of course. it is a cheap, easy to shoot, round. But if it is going to be a SHTF scenerio, and your rifle is set to like 175gr over varget and now all you can get is 147 ball ammo or 150gr hunting rounds then what it is the same as any other store bought ammo/rifle combo. chances are good though ammo will be more available than others and would serve its purpose at shorter ranges i guess. Thinkin out loud Sorry

But i do have one and love it LOL

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

How about three 308's all Savages a 116 SS Weather Warrior, 2 model 12's. The 16 is in the factory stock with a Karsten rest on it shoots 1/2 inch at a 100 with Surplus M-80 ammo. The 12's are on roll your owns one is set up for Berger 150 BTHP over 43 grs. of IMR-4320 and sit .003 off the lands other is set for Berger 168 gr.BTHP over 43.5 grs. of IMR-4320 and sit .006 off the lands both rifles shoot 1/4 inch at 100 yds. if I do my part. All my Savages which there are 6 of have 4x14,50 WOTAC scopes and they work great all hold zero and are repeatable.

The .270 is a great hunting round with good terminal ballistics but when it comes to long range work, the .270 will not outperform the 308.

I think if you're new to reloading or you want to get into reloading, a 308 is an excellent choice. Nearly infinite component choices and very easy/forgiving to load for.

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

308 win is a BIG YES!
110-210gr bullets, use sabots for .224=4000fps
But if it is going to be a SHTF scenerio and ammo gets hard to find you could shoot 243, 7-08 and 260 which all were created off the 308 parent case, at close range still deadly.

YES on 308 win

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

Absolutely not.

Especially if you have a 260, 7-08, or 30-06.

The whole "its a military round" is an overblown plus for the 308, in my opinion. I'm not expecting a SHTF/EOTWAWKI situation where I'm scrounging M118LR to keep myself or my family alive any time soon and even *if* such an unlikely scenario happens, 5.56 will be quite a bit more common.

That said, I'm about to commence beating on my pops to get his safe queen M1A...

I think 30-06 Springfield should be added to list.

If you end up going against the US Government your not going to need very much. Ask Randy Weaver and other about that.

I'm not believing the SHTF will ever happen. We have our SHTF moments at the Voting booth.

Americans really believe we can work through any hard times and come out stronger and better than before.

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

Being new to this website you can feel free to me ignore but it seems that using a round that is so common, in a SHTF scenario everyone is going to be after that ammo.I'd be willing to bet nobody's gonna grab there 7mm-08 or 243 when something goes down.

That being said my wishlist has about 15 .308 rifles so yeah

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

I don't think everyone needs one by any means...but I haven't ever really understood having MORE THAN 2 of any caliber.

Sometimes 2 is ok, cause you can go with lighter profiles or different lengths or twists, but more than that seems like it could be better spent on something new to master.

They have done some test and using similar setups, barrel length and all, the .270 shoots much flatter and faster than the .308. Many people argue the .308 has a heavier bullet so it can do more damage after a certain distance. But, this is not all true. The .270 has 150-165 grain bullets (which many of the .308's use 150-165 grain bullets) and I think there some 180+ grain 270's now and are moving much faster therefore have more energy when they reach the target. Just because the .270 is a long action gun therefore never used in military doesn't mean I wont out perform some of the military short action rounds.

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

.270 Win
The long 160 grain bullet has a SD of .298. This is comparable to the heavy 175 grain 7mm bullet, 200 grain .30 bullet, or 220 grain 8mm bullet. According to the Nosler Reloading Guide this bullet can be driven to over 2800 fps in the standard .270 Winchester or 3100 fps in the .270 Weatherby Magnum. Zowie!

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

No I can't see any reason at all, espsially not in a long range gun as the .308 is not a long range cartridge more than a Volvo is a racing car.
For a gun in that size there is .260, 243, 7mm etc, loads of much better rounds.

Yes I do have a few 7,62 guns, G3, L1A1, 1919A4 etc that I intend to keep as they are, but it's for sure not the cartridge I wanna keep, but the gun.
And there is a good many calibers that would be better in those guns than 7,62.

Re: ***Your Opinion***Does everyone need a .308???????

I like it for a practice gun. I shoot a 6.5x47 for competition but I alos try to shoot at least once a week to the tune of about 3000 rounds a year. shooting that much out of the 6.5 I would use 1 1/2 barrels a year. With the .308 I'm not worried about burning the barrel out so I can work on fundamentals and still shoot long range with it.

The .308 is another tool for the tool box, a familiar well used and loved tool.
