SFC (retired) William W. Knox II was the first NCOIC of the US Army Sniper school at Ft. Benning Ga. He died on 10 December 2021 in Idaho.



There was not much of an obituary in the local paper, just that he lived from 1943 until 2021. He deserves more, so this is my attempt.

Billy was born an “honest to God” Idaho cowboy. His family brand is the Spanish Bit. It looks like two backwards S’s with a bar between them. I’d go to his house and paw his 73 Winchesters, and other family guns. “That one’s killed it’s man” Billy would comment.

Billy was the only guy I ever met who did divorce intelligently. Back in the day, when you got divorced you paid alimony until your ex-wife remarried or died. It took a real dope to remarry and kill the cash cow, so you paid your ex-wife until she died. Not Bill. He paid her off with one lump sum, then he was done dealing with her. She was free to remarry. Smart, better to pay the banker for 5 years, than her for life. Billy never remarried, but was often in the company of an attractive woman. He was a pretty smooth talker.

While stationed at Ft. Benning, Billy was tasked with forming the U.S. Army Sniper School from scratch. This was an awesome undertaking, and Billy was the man for the job. Ft. Benning is not only the Infantry’s school house but also the home of the Army’s rifle team and some of the world’s most famous riflemen. The early classes were taught by the Army’s best riflemen; Billy was never one to do it half-way. Classes started 11 July 1987, and since then Army Snipers have put down a lot of bad men.

While stationed at Ft. Benning, Billy also started prepping for retirement. He told me, “those guys out west have never seen an alligator. I think they’d pay to see one”, and a plan was born. He designed a stainless-steel trailer, where he could sleep upstairs, and Ally the Gator would be down stairs. Never one to go off halfcocked, he did his homework by studying how to care for an alligator, what diseases they were susceptible to, etc. What worried me was he planned it all around a 14-foot gator. Weem’s pond on Ft. Benning had a 14-foot gator in it, and I was afraid Billy would ask me to help him steal it. I know nothing of wrangling gators, but I’d have been there with a rope and waders if he had asked. I needed not have worried. He bought one somewhere, took it out west and became a Carnie. He would send me T-shirts and ball caps with teeth marks across them and blood streaming down advertising Ally the Gator. He had a blast until a heart problem slowed him down.

He went back to Idaho and moved to the end of the road, where he spent his last years with his rifles and his dogs. He kept his eye on the sniper world, made trips back to Ft. Benning, and stayed in contact with old friends. I’d get an E-mail with the subject line of THAT’S BULLSHIT!! and I knew it was a video by a know nothing wanna-be about sniping. Billy took it personally.

They buried SFC William W. Knox II on the 16th of December. Don’t send flowers. Fill your glass with some fine scotch and toast the man who brought sniping back to the U.S. Army. Then fill it again for the men that he trained either directly or indirectly who have as Billy’s old 73, “killed their man”.

Just joking, but it seems much simpler than my Giraud (plus one size fits all). I saw the F-Class John video where he compared the two and got better results; havent tested myself so dont know. Does anyone have any experience with both - anyone else compare? Any thoughts on trimming to length via the base as opposed to the shoulder? And if your headspace is consistent does it even matter (I suppose that applies to both)?

If any vendor ask you to use Paypal's Friends and Family feature to send them money, run, run, run. Don't do business with them. It is likely a scam and you won't be getting your money back. I've come across a bunch of ammo-selling web sites with prices on ammo to good to be true (one-third of what the same ammo is selling for everywhere else, if you can even get it). Everything looks great...supposedly rave reviews...until you go through the payment part of the checkout. The checkout process doesn't include any option that allows you get your money back if the seller is fraudulent. This includes Paypal's Friends and Family feature. Real vendors don't ask for Friends and Family payments. So, if you see prices too good to be true and all the payment options don't seem to give you any money protection, don't do business with that web site or vendor.

I’m playing with an idea and am looking for any experiences or opinions. This new year I’m changing up my scope setup because I wanna try and get a scope I’ve always lusted after. I currently have a razor HD Gen II on my comp rifle and 223 trainer. Both with EBR-7C reticle.

I have always wanted a Zco scope but can only afford one at this time. Which means I would have to swap it between my comp and trainer rifle while I save up for a second one later. Is that practical or a hassle?

To me it seems like it would only take a couple shots to sight in and it would be good to go on the trainer and I could keep the zero for the comp gun. So doesn’t seem too bad in my head. Am I overlooking anything? Anyone have experience with this kind of a scenario? These are the only two rifles this gun would live on.

Trying to get the wife into some model trains as a hobby we can share together. Ok, the title is a joke, but check this out. From my AIAX barrel, it used to shoot one shot on top of the next, now the groups have opened up, it still shoots good but just not 1/4 moa anymore. WTF did I do, was this from rust? Overpressure? I have never oiled my barrels and was this from erosion? Whats the copper color stuff, is that copper or rust? Gunsmiths chime in please.

Alright, I will add to this thread as more info comes in but wanted to get all the new stuff in one place. Finally we will have some serious options in the clip on category. Stand alone scopes are very popular in this country for good reason. They have everything you typically need and want for short range hunting. Recording, multiple reticle options, great resolution etc. Where they really come up short is in the long range arena. Utilizing a etched reticle from your day optic will always be far superior and exponentially more precise than using a digital reticle in a low mag stand alone. I could go on and on about why clip on units are superior beyond MPBR (maximum point blank range) but I'd like to focus on the products here.

One technical item to discuss here as you compare optics is FOV. Field of view is the best indicator of the long range capabilities of a clip on. The more FPA pixels you are jamming into a given area the greater the detection and ID range all other things equal. Obviously there are other pieces of the pie ( post image processing, display type and resolution, sensitivity, etc) but the best indicator of " how much mag can it handle" is FOV at full res. For reference the long range king of the uncooled long wave thermals is still the UTC series. Both the X and Xii have 6.2 degree fov which equates very roughly to 34 feet horizontally at 100 yds. So if you think in terms of " im spreading the 640 pixels of my thermal detector across 34 feet when viewing an object at 100 yds" you can understand how a narrower fov would enable you to have more pixels on the given target and therefore more ability to handle higher mag before detector pixelation occurs. Of course the tightest FOV may not be what fits your situation best. Keep in mind that even 5x utilizing your own reticle and turrets will get you some serious range at night time compared to a stand alone optic.

Lets get to the products. Obviously this is not an all encompassing list but wanted to talk about some of the new stuff on the immediate horizon.


COMM units

1. Steiner C-35
These should be hitting the market 1st quarter 2022.

We've been given a sneak preview of the capabilities of this unit by the release of the 35mm s35 and h35 units from steiner. Both of those units have extremely impressive imaging. While the s35 and h35 have high res displays (1024 and 1280 respectively), the C35 comes in at 800. It is effectively assigning 1.25 display pixels to every detector pixel. While I like to see that number a little higher keep in mind that the benchmark (utc xii) is 1 to 1 640 display. Sometimes assigning detector pixels to more display pixels allows for a little optical cheating especially on higher FOV units. Honestly you're unit is only as good as its detector but smoothing of lines can be achieved when "upscaling" so high res displays are a nice option especially on a unit like this.
In looking at the specs I'm guessing that this unit will have a sweet spot of about 3x on your day scope mag and a range of 1.5 to 5x or so. One of the biggest remaining questions on this unit will be the mounting system. As of now the plan is to have a pic mount that interfaces with the c35 from the eyepiece ring. We'll see how that turns out. Should be a pretty solid med range unit with above average imaging and a quality aluminum housing. Steiner/iray have very impressive post processing software they plugged into these.

2. AGM TC50-640

I have some limited experience with the tc35 384 units and the stand alone 50mm 640. I think this will be one of the best bang for the buck long range units this yr. around $5k will get you a unit that can take 8x pretty easily. Biggest questions at this price range is component/build quality and a very rudimentary post processing software that tends to struggle with gain control. Nearly all "polymer", the unit is very lightweight but at what expense? With the display and detector specs I'd bet on a sweet spot of 4x and a happy range of 2x- 8x. These units do allow for screen collimation but don't expect it to be plug and play with multiple guns as far as poi shift.


3. Pulsar Krypton

This is an intriguing product for sure. Great sensor, great display. I had a chance to play with a early production euro model back about a yr ago. The unit I had did have an issue with the focus but that was just an issue with that particular unit. Even so, it looked great. Much like the steiner the pic mount was an afterthought that had to be engineered after the fact......, it will interface with the eyepiece for the picatinny mount. In a perfect world they would have a body mount like everyone else but these euro models are always built to hang off of the objective for some reason. Sweet spot on this should be 4x and should have 2-9x acceptable range. Focus dial on top of unit and the long run rechargeable pulsar battery system should make it an attractive option in the medium-long range segment.

This is the medium range version of the optic that EOTECH will be importing from THEON Sensors in Greece. Warranty and US service will be handled by eotech.
Theon builds these entirely in house and is a major player in the overseas market. They are pretty heavy units since they have a very robust collimated eyepiece and all aluminum body. They are 50 cal rated and they utilize a raised objective design similar to a lwts enabling the unit to clear a rail mounted laser. eyepiece height above rail is the industry standard of 1.55 inches or so. Being a 12 degree fov optic it has a sweet spot of 3-4x and a comfortable range of 1.5-6x or so.

The LR version of the Thermis has the same body as the above model but with a 75mm lens. I used and tested this model. I was very impressed with its performance. repeatable POI on several rifles. Solid imaging capabilities. The different agc modes did take a little getting used to but once it was dialed in I was very happy with it. The 50 cal rating is very believable when you pick this thing up. It is like the pvs30 of thermals. heavy and built like a brick shithouse. It did have a compass built in. Not sure what the final "BOM" will look like or if there is any LRF display capabilities that can be tapped in to but I will update as info becomes avail. Sweet spot on this guy was around 5 or 6x and 10x was very usable. This will be a popular item at its projected price point.. I feel that the capabilities as a clip on fill in the gap between the lwts-lr and the utc. LWTS-LR falls behind as a clip on primarily due to the display resolution in clip on mode.

The second cell phone pic below is a house and hill top at 2200 meters. I was able to see a person walking their dog on that road with enough detail to tell them apart at that range.

I was just trying to do business.

I've been handling a lot of paper this Winter and it's drying me out even more than the usual here in dry Colorado. I have tried a couple products with some good results and found a trick, probably not a new one, that has been extremely helpful. Thought I'd share and hoped you might share your tips and tricks in regards to dry, split fingers and hands.

This is my dry hand first aid kit. The newest is the Bag Balm and while greasy/oily, it works much better than I expected. The superglue is a life saver. I use it on the splits and cracks and it keeps them from continuing to split and really help with the pain of those splits. Great for paper cuts as well.

Wanted to let you know that with some help from another Hider today, it was discovered that our esteemed and well loved member Sgt47 has died.
All the way back in early October.


We all knew he wasn't posting on here. Knew he had been battling both Lymphoma and then had fallen ill shortly after finishing up radiation.
I secretly kept hoping he was taking a break from all the strain of the world and electronics, enjoying a nice fall with his new dog.

I did find his email address prior to this being found and shortly after reading his obituary, I received an email from his son.
"We miss him greatly, but are thankful he is at home with the Lord. Know dad appreciated the camaraderie and kindness extended to him and he enjoyed logging onto Sniper's Hide daily"
