RIP Joe Galloway.


Longtime American foreign correspondent Joseph L. Galloway, best known for his book recounting a pivotal battle in the Vietnam War that was made into a Hollywood movie, has died at age 79.

A native of Refugio, Texas, Galloway spent 22 years as a war correspondent and bureau chief for United Press International, including serving four tours in Vietnam. He then worked for U.S. News & World Report magazine and Knight Ridder newspapers in a series of overseas roles, including reporting from the Persian Gulf War in 1991.

Galloway died Wednesday morning, his wife Grace Galloway said, after being hospitalized near their home in Concord, N.C. He is also survived by two sons and a stepdaughter.

“He was the kindest, most gentle and loving man,” Grace Galloway said. “He loved the boys and girls of the U.S. military. He loved his country.”

The humidity of your powder can have an impact on your load's performance and consistency. But there's little in the way of actual public data about it. I wanted to collect the highest quality data I could, so I sent 120 rounds downrange to measure just that.

I tested H4350 at five different humidity levels and measured how moisture affects the velocity and pressure of a load (spoiler: it's significant). I then isolated and measured exactly how much of that effect is due to the change in weight of the powder vs. the change in burn rate.

I would not win a large match. I would not know if poor trigger pull was turning .3 groups into .5s if I did not dry fire. I have dry fired my 10/22s and CZs, 10s of thousands of times without issue. I know other have experienced this emotion before, but today was a first for me. To set up the situation, I was home like most other days. Surfing the web, listening to 70 Rock and just having a decent day. Power goes off for a short time, but when it comes back on, I've got no TV, no internet and even Alexis isn't talking to me. So what's a guy to do? I figure I'll get a few guns out of the safe and give them a coat of oil.

Well to my amazement, I look in one of the safes and there sitting in front like it just appeared out of no where is a 12 gauge Remington 870. The odd thing is, it's not in the correct safe. It's in my rifle safe. I grab it and go to my computer and open my inventory database.

It's not there. No new shotgun, no new 870, no new serial number. Now I'm anal when it comes to recording my firearm purchases. With that information and the fact that it was in the wrong safe, makes me sure I didn't purchase the shotgun.

So how did it get there? One of my kids? My wife? I don't know, but I'll take it.

There's no need of me asking the wife or kids, because if they did buy it for me, they would never tell me they did it.

I'm a happy husband and dad. This really made my day. BTW, the gun looks brand new, doesn't appear to be fired at all.

I know some folks regret selling a firearm that they bought. But do you have a firearm that you bought, that you couldn't wait to sell. For me personally it was a knockoff Ithica Model 37. I bought it just as a stopgap until I could find a decent real Ithica 37. However, it was complete junk. I wasn't happy at all. Sold it back to the gun shop that sold it to me. Only lost $20, so it could have been a lot worse.
