Precision Rifle Gear Let’s Talk Bipods

So I own an Elite Iron, Atlas Cal and Scal, LRA F-class Lite Tactical, and a hand-me down notch-less Harris that I reserve for wood-stocked sling stud rifles.

I am not a competitor and only shoot from tripods or the bench. So I shouldn’t probably even voice an opinion…ah, wtf here goes.

If I had to pick just one, it would be the LRA. It’s versatile, made of carbon fiber and so it is nice to hold in cold temps. Super stable, very deep yoke. Fine control over cant, and it can totally lock off.

They make a narrower PRS version for you folks, but I’m a little unclear on how it operates. The legs extend without a button press…I think.

If I get another bipod it would probably be a notched leg Harris with an RRS dual pic/arca clamp. I say this because my particular LRA is a wide boi and won’t fit attached in my rifle cases. The Cal is nice in that regard.

What is convincing about the Harris is apparently so many competitors still use the thing, like 37%! Like 4 of the top 10 still use an Harris (like Austin Orgain). And the top two-bipod combo is a Cyke and Harris. I have zero need for a Cyke.

According to that article, the three guys interviewed use rubber feet on whatever bipods they use, with one guy using sled feet sometimes. This surprised me as well. I’m sure they can shoot much better than I, off of whatever bipod.
I've been researching bipods a lot recently, I was always a Harris guy until the I was eventually convinced (seeing guys at matches) that the Ckye Pod was actually going to give me features that the Harris didn't have.

However I hardly use any of the Ckye Pod features and find myself missing the simplicity of the Harris, for many uses.
I don't want to press any buttons to deploy the legs, missing the ability to just pull on the Harris legs is a bit annoying but the spring loaded out, and then lower with rifle weight often works better than starting low and moving up (extending the legs).

I've looked into all the different options and have come to the same conclusion that a Harris with a RRS dual clamp is a really great option to pair with the Ckye Pod. I recently came across that PRS Blog article and was happy to see lot of comp shooters have come to the same conclusion.

Barrel Extension Replication

The only way to 100% match tolerances is to have the original prints from Remington. Otherwise the best you can do is measure a part or sample lot of parts and see where the dimensions lie and then make educated decisions about what tolerances to make new parts to. Having mating parts will also tell you a lot in order to make educated decisions on what tolerance range will make a functional part.

There’s really one of a couple options here.

1. Bring a part to a machine shop and ask them to replicate it. They will match tolerances as close as possible to the original. In this case you’re either letting the machinist make judgement calls on what’s “close enough” or you’re giving him a max deviation tolerance. If you let the machinist decide you’re more likely to get a non functional part and then have to pay for multiple iterations to get it right. If you go with a max dimensional deviation, the tighter the tolerance you require it to be to the original the more expensive it gets.

2. Reverse engineer it making new models and prints and specify tolerances with what information you have. This is more expensive up front but allows for reproduction, and if it’s ever done in mass production will give you the lowest price per part. Having a model and print allows a machine shop to produce even a small batch more efficiently. This is also your best bet to have a functional part.

Rifle Scopes Scope riser on a prs rifle? i have an eye relief problem

Best thing to do is take a few pics of you set up behind the rifle and from the sides.

Slight positional changes can cause issues

I apparently have high cheek bones. I have almost every cheek piece close to the top with regular height rings. My old TRG I had to make an extra spacer and longer bolt.
what specifically do you look for in the pics?

norma tac 22 vs norma match

The rifle was a CZ457 Varmint, Non-Match, 20" barrel. 25 rounds were chrony for this test. ES22 SD 8 AVG FPS 1093, rated @1083.
I noted above I mis-spoke about the MATCG AMMO, It was the HIGH PERFORMANCE TARGET that I was testing that gave the other numbers. I corrected it above.
I imagine the ES would be grow with a larger sample, but if that batch shoots well in your rifle I'd be buying as much as I possibly could.

If your action is 90* throw I don’t think you can extend past the rear of the rail? Raising the scope up will increase the issue you have. The chassis could be an issue for you.
It is 90°. Itll be tight, for sure. I will say it's a new chassis, first time using an MPA. Maybe it is. I'm lost tbh.

A more quiet suppressor on a 50 BMG rifle ?

I don’t see the point in suppressing a a 50 BMG. The extreme cost, length and weight - juice just ain’t worth the squeeze. And with cans other than TBAC you’re going to have a notable increase in recoil which will affect your shooting and I don’t care what you read with guys saying “it’s fine”. It’s probably fine for IPSC inside of 1000 yards. It will rattle your cage and there are few superhuman shooters out there who are not affected by it unless they’re plinking big targets, thumping their chest, and trying to prove how manly they are.

I added 11” to my DT barrel (40” total) and get another ~150 FPS. Cost $100 extra for the blank, and the foot of length

I can see specific scenarios where you may want it. I’d rather spend my $6000 elsewhere and get free velocity - and muzzle chaos farther in front of me that way

Next time I may go to 45” which is the barrel length John Browning designed the cartridge for.

Finally, if you’re planning on suppressing the factory DT barrel, look carefully at the threads. They’re using metric and it can be difficult to find a compatible muzzle device.

YMMV

Ruger Precision Rimfire

The Ruger Precision Rimfire is like the 1984-1988 Pontiac Fiero - a potential great thing cheaped down and turned into a turd by beancounters. I've never seen one do well in matches - maybe because they're mainly purchased by newbies with little experience? When they first came out, I played with my nephew's copy, using several mid-level match ammo SKUs... and it was never better than so-so at 50 yards and not really a contender at 100 or more.

As suggested above - get one of the lesser CZ-457 variants for the "starter kit" and upgrade the barrel, stock, and maybe trigger as your daughter grows in stature and experience.

No matter what you upgrade on a Ruger RPRR, it's still gonna be a Ruger RPRR with a reputational albatross around its neck. The CZ is the opposite - even its inexpensive variants have a great reputation, with the action potentially serving as the foundation of a very good build using upgraded barrel/stock components.
