The Europeans and war hawks in the US DoD all agreed that Ukraine would fall quickly, since Putin started with strategic encirclement. There is no reason why he should have faltered with his SMO, yet he showed the world how weak Russia is in not being able to accomplish its strategic objectives with a neighboring nation they had surrounded, even after using the Biden energy plan to enrich Russia for a full year while Putin prepared his forces for the invasion.
European would have put their heads in the sand once again, like they did after Chechnya, Georgia, Transistria, and Putin would then have annexed Moldova. Since that didn’t happen, and Europeans saw how weak Russia really was, they still waited a while before sending weapons and supplies to Ukraine because they weren’t sure.
They know within themselves that they have neglected their own defense, so the longer Russia is bogged down in Ukraine, the more temporary security they enjoy while some Germans, French, Brits, Poles, Hungarians, Finns, Czechs, Italians, Spaniards, Slovaks, Austrians, Belgians, Dutch, and Swedes begin the series of endless meetings trying to figure out what to do.
The US looks at all of this and says, “Why is this my problem?” Because of the combination of European neglect of their defense budgets, and Putin’s Tsarist dreams of expansion, they made their problems everybody’s problems.
Now Trump has to step in and figure it out and provide leadership that has never existed before in the US White House.
