Gunsmithing Barnes 70gr TSX copper fouling, how bad is it?

I've been reading reports of the extreme copper fouling caused by Barnes TSX bullets in rifles. Some people are claiming their groups expanding from 1 MOA to 4-6 MOA after 30 rounds.

There are some articles claiming Barnes has fixed this issue with the introduction of grooves within the bullet to ease fouling and lower the pressure. Does this provide any significant relief of copper fouling or is the difference minimal?

I plan on using the 70gr TSX in a KAC SR15 for self defense and hunting. I'm now unsure if these would be ideal for using mag after mag in a prolonged self defense situation.

Can anyone confirm just how bad these bullets depreciate accuracy after only 1-2 magazines?

Thanks in advance!

Frankford Arsenal case trimmer upgrades

I've messed around with different case trimmers and really like the shoulder referenced setup. A Henderson trimmer costs an arm and a leg by the time you get it to Australia. I bought one of the Frankford Arsenal drill mounted cutters a while back and it worked great, it was just a bit fiddly with the plastic collets and washers and needed a separate chamfer tool. I was going to make a motor driven setup for the cutter and chamfer tools but then I saw the FA powered case trimmer for sale on Amazon for a good price and bought it. I made a few upgrades straight away. I machined the case holder setup to fit the "ugly trimmer" steel case specific pilots (that gets rid of the plastic collet and washer) and fitted a carbide cutter and inside chamfer tool to it. I've got pilots for pretty much everything I shoot and machined some blank ones for the oddball cases (6.5 SAUM and 223 Ackley).

I also designed and printed a chip catcher basket for it and replaced the little toolbox on top with a storage block for the pilots and different cutters. (The chip basket is on Thingiverse if anyone wants to print themself one).

This is actually a really good bit of gear now after a night's work machining bits and printing the parts. It's repeatable to within .001" or so and very quick.

A shout out to Zeiss

I purchased a Zeiss S3 3x36x56 milr from a member here, @Macirish received it, pretty quickly. We were dealing with 3 days of rain and tornado warnings so i didnt get to the range for several days. When I did I got the elevation set, no problem. Went to set the windage and found the torx wrench broken off in the socket, see photo. I complained to the seller and he said I must have broken it and refused to give me a refund. I returned it to Zeiss and they're fixing it under warranty. Thanks to a quality company for a quality scope and great customer service.

Hunting & Fishing Experimenting w/ different calibers on deer (Graphic)

Over the last few weeks I've been experimenting using the same bullet but different calibers. These are southeastern deer - so already pretty small. Most are yearling bucks or does between 60-100lbs. Ranges were pretty close. All bullets are ELDX - .223, 6.5, 308, 300 WSM. All handloads.

.223 Neck Shot @ 130 yards 80gr ELDX (this was earlier this year)

223.jpg

6.5 CM 143gr ELDX @ 90 & 110y

IMG_1904.jpg

308 178gr ELDX @ 40 yards & 160 yards

308.jpg

300 WSM 200gr ELDX @ 140y (Both pics are the same deer)

300wsm.jpg

There was definitely no "Magic bullet". They all seemed to perform the same (223 was a neck shot). The sample size is limited so I plan on shooting more with the .223 in the lungs and trying to get similar POIs on deer to get better comparisons. It's hard to tell if a deer is slightly quartering away with thermal especially at 100+ yards.

At these ranges and with these deer, given any rifle, I'd stick to a .223 AR. It's got more rounds, less recoil, and my thermal is more of an AR platform friendly setup (NOX35) than a bolt gun. Neck shots drop them instantly whereas even with the big rifles in the lungs they still run between 25-50y.

I think the 300 WSM is unnecessary and not worth the cost of ammo or recoil. I didn't do an autopsy but they all ran the same distance before dying. If I had to use a bolt gun/bigger rifle caliber I'd stick to the 6.5 CM for the reduced recoil. 300 WSM would be a great longer range/Elk gun but on southeastern whitetail it just seems so excessive.

Remington M24 Scope mounting questions

Hey guys, first post here. I just purchased a GA Precision M24 off of gun broker (and a 0 MOA MARS rail from the same shop). The gun is still in transit and I just want to sanity check a few things in regards to scope mounting. First off, the MARS rail did not ship with screws which I think will be problematic. I'm hoping I can just have some screws made at a shop near me. Or maybe someone knows of a website that still has them? What size screws will I need? I've also seen a post where someone mentioned having to tap the action to accept the MARS rail screws and MARS rail. Is that accurate? I just refuse to believe they sent the army a rail that required modification on the action holes but anything is possible.

Next, I wanted to purchase a scope with similar(ish) size to the Leupold M3a. I ended up going with a Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44 (a bit bigger than the original M3a scope but I wanted some newer tech to go with it). Assuming I can make the MARS rail work, what height rings will be the lowest I can go? I will probably just wait for the gun to get in before I pick rings at my LGS but if someone has a similar setup I'd love to see it.

Lastly, If I cant immediately get the MARS rail mounted up, will a standard long action Remington 700 Scope base fit onto the m24 action? I'm assuming so but I haven't been able to confirm that on the internet. Thank you guys!
