What’s in a screen name

Simple question, cause I see so many and wonder what the story is. What does your screen name mean.

Mine is simple, it is my nickname throughout a lot of my life. My last name is Cogburn, and I grew up in Arkansas really close to Ft. Smith and Judge Parker’s court. The 98 is the year I joined Uncle Sugars chain gang

Is it possible to become a really skilled long range shooter with a semi-auto?

Hello Everyone,

I’ve been researching mid- to long-range shooting and I’m curious about the potential for developing skill with a semi-automatic .308 match-grade rifle. My understanding is that bolt-action rifles are generally preferred for long-range accuracy due to their inherent stability and consistency, but I’m interested in knowing if it’s possible to achieve similar levels of proficiency with a semi-auto platform, especially in the mid- to long-range (300 to 1,000 yards).

Specifically, I’d like to know:
  1. Is it possible to consistently hit targets at these distances (300-1,000 yards) with a semi-auto .308, given that I would be using match-grade ammunition?
  2. What are the key factors that would contribute to becoming skilled in this discipline with a semi-auto rifle? (e.g., barrel quality, trigger control, optics, training, etc.)
  3. How much of a challenge is it to manage recoil, follow-up shots, and maintain accuracy with a semi-auto compared to bolt-action rifles at long range?
I’m looking to understand whether it’s realistic to pursue this type of shooting with a semi-auto rifle, and if so, what would be the best practices for improving accuracy and consistency over longer distances. Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your input!

Loading .280 Remington to Full Potential

I've been handloading rifle cartridges for about thirty years, but never loaded for .280 Remington before and I recently acquired a .280 Remington custom rifle with these specs:

- 24", 1-9" .280 Rem McGowen barrel with a fairly tight chamber and a long throat
- action & magazine handle up to 3.6" COAL

So far I've tested H4350 up to book max loads with various bullet weights to get a sense of the velocities & pressures. Accuracy seems promising, but velocities are on the low side and pressures seem VERY low.

I've heard that RL26 should work well with the heavier projectiles in .280 Rem, but the only official data I've found is for Berger 150s (61.0 gr max @ 2997 fps).
I haven't used RL26 before, so I ran the numbers for 168 grainers with Gordon's Reloading Tool and asked my buddy to do the same with QuickLoad - results look like this:

280_168_RL_26.png

All firsthand information about loading .280 Remington using projectiles weighing 150 to 180 grains would be highly welcome and if you happen to load .280 Rem with RL26, I'd be very interested to hear about your experiences.

Can't get scope to zero low enough with 20MOA rail

My setup:
Defiant Deviant action with 20MOA pic rail built-in
26" Bartlein 5R barrel
300Win Mag
Leupold MK4HD 4.5-18x52 MOA #183624
Reptilia one-piece mount, 0 cant
190gr Hornady Match ammo (and others)

My problem:
Trying to zero this rifle at 25yds, hitting 5" above aim with the elevation bottomed completely out on the scope.
At 150yds. bullet impact is 24 inches high from point of aim with elevation bottomed out.

Is the issue the capabilities of my scope, not enough adjustment range, or what? My next move will be to mount this scope with a 20MOA mount reversed, to counter the cant of the receiver's integral rail, but this feels like a stop-gap, not a solution.

My goal for the rifle was to shoot out to 1,000+ so I ordered the receiver with the 20MOA. Is this too much for a .300WM?

First night out with Dark30 what are you thoughts?

Got a Dark30 truck mounted thermal and had a night to finally take it out. Here is a quick video of the Pulsar rifle scope and then the Dark 30. Let me know what you think or if you have questions I plan to do a full review video on the Dark30 soon.
