Geissele Heavy Barrels. (Update 28OCT24)

Has anyone had any time behind these new heavy profile Geissele barrel??

I just picked one up from Primary Arms with thier Halloween sale. They look to be the same profile as the barrels I custom order. Only thing I would have done differently is 5/8x24 threads and a intermediate gas length.

Night Vision Thermal question regarding Burris

I know the general sentiment on here regarding the Burris thermals, but I have an opportunity to pick up one of the V3 640 scopes for about $2700. Optics Planet has them for $3500 currently. I do not currently own any thermal optics and have little experience with them. My intended use is to thin out the coyote population on my hunting land, which would likely consist of shots out to 250ish max. My question is, am I be better served to spend the same amount of money on a different optic, which would bump me down to 384 in most cases, or get the discounted 640 Burris?

Thanks

Tikka T3X CTR First Shots...WOW!

Today I took out a new Tikka T3X CTR in 6.5 CM shooting for the first time and I have to say I'm really impressed. I was just using old hand loads (with varying powder charges working up in 0.3 grain increments) I had lying around for a different rifle. I labelled the groups in order. It seems the groups tightened up as I shot more. All groups are 5 shot groups at 100 yards. The average group size was 0.57 MOA and all groups were under 1 MOA. I can't wait to see how she shoots with a bit of load development.

The other cool thing is that the first group being low was a result of crudely boresighting the gun. I shot in the middle of 4 targets sheets to make sure I got on paper. Turns out, I was only 1 inch low on elevation (the point of aim was the red dot above the group) and dead on for windage. It doesn't get much better than that. It was probably pure luck, but I'll take it. :ROFLMAO:

Distance to the lands question, and a thank you!

1. Do you measure distance to the lands everytime you swap bullets or once and done good enough?

2. I had a bunch of 212 grain eldx 30 cal bullets and 6.5mm sst given to me but some of them are tarnished, almost as if they were not kept in a climate controlled area there’s no rough spots on them or anything just a few discolored here and there. Are they good to run?

I also just wanted to say thank you to everyone on here who helped me on my reloading journey. I was brand new to this but was eager to learn so I read threw a few reloading manuals and reached out to a PRS buddy of mine and asked if I could watch him go threw his reloading process. I learned more in 30 minutes watching and talking with him than I did in any of those books.

Someone on here recommended I start with the 6.5 creedmoor as it’s easy to learn on so that’s what I did and here are some results. I know they’re 3 shot groups but this is coming out of a Ruger American with a thin barrel and I just didn’t want to waste components as I’m learning. I tweaked this load a little more and got SD down in the 4s keep in mind it’s a 22” barrel.

I figured maybe I just got lucky as that gun has always shot good for what it is so I started working on my older remmington 700 .270 that has hardly ever shot sub MOA and now that’s my most accurate deer rifle. A few pictures of the gun and results.

I’m sure there could be improvement but for my first reloads I was pretty happy and now I’m looking at expander mandrels and annealing to further increase precision. My simple reloading setup.

Rifle Scopes 1x prism and magnifier

So apparently I have an astigatism, haha... I have red dots on almost all my rifles (as offsets on bolt and offsets or primaries on gas guns) and pistols and have no issues using them effectively although the dot isn't necessarily super crisp (this is with quality red dots, Aimpoint Micros, Acros, PROs). I had only ever really used magnifiers with Eotechs (EXPS 3-2 and 3-4) and the dots although not perfectly crisp, were usable. Yesterday I tried a 6x Vortex magnifier behind my Aimpoint Pro and the dot was just a messy diagonal splotch...

Since I doubt that a higher end magnifier would make any difference, that got me to thinking about trying a 1x prism with a magnifier. When I look at Primary Arms' website, they say their 1x is compatible with their magnifier. Vortex however says that their 1x prism isn't compatible with their magnifier. Being that I don't imagine the "tech" is any different between those 2 brands (as they're just OEMing china stuff anyways) I was curious why one brand would say it's a go and another wouldn't. The only real issue I could imagine would potentially be eye relief so I'd be curious to hear from anyone who's tried this kind of setup. Is this a viable setup or am I better to just get an Eotech? Is there a reason that the dots are crisper with a holo like the Eotech than with red dot like an Aimpoint?

Tying it all together, APMobile, Calypso and LRFs?

So I was reading up on the Calypso and am trying to envision the end state. As an FNG to precision I'm attending my first NRL Hunter event (teamed with a good buddy) in April. I love being efficient (read "lazy"), we are spending lots of time on our workflow. The simpler and easier we can make work, the more time we have for the actually spotting and shooting, right?

So with the Calypso, you can feed the ABMobile app automagically and get your readings, which is wonderful. If you put it in relative wind mode, you can bolt it to the diving board of your rifle and have wind "built in" (I know, wind is tricky and what you feel may not be what is happening elsewhere). But, at least, it is something and very cool.

So now what I'm trying to figure out is how to integrate the LRF Binos. Because I'm in a team event, in a perfect world the spotter would find all four targets (or one target, or two targets, whatever), and then, as part of the workflow, laze the first target. This would then update my APMobile app with range (wind is already there as I'm pointing my rifle at it), and I've got my dope without having to check anything.

Are there LRF binos out there that can sync this way with AB Mobile (or some other app, preferably using the AB engine)?

Cheers!
