October 2024 Topstraps Rimfire Challenge Timed Match Notice

Well, Fall is finally here and this will be the last Topstraps Rimfire Challenge matche of the year. This is the match I wait for all year, it's by far the most fun to run and watch everyone compete in. Some competitors get a bit intimidated by it since there is a time limit but quite a few of us have shot Single shots and easily finished. This is a Unique Rimfire Match that combines accuracy, precision, smoothness of reloading your magazine and making the changes needed to hit targets at varying distances from 25 yards to 197 yards with a timer counting down.

A shooter may re-enter but will have to get back in line to shoot the second time. As always, no Benchrest type equipment meaning no benchrest style front or rear rests. Bipods/Bags on front and bags or a monopod on the rear. I do allow adjustable bipods such as a Rempel for the front. The competitor when reloading their magazine has to hold it in their hands and not have it contacting anything to help feed rounds into it, if a competitor has trouble loading their magazine they can hand it off to someone else who can reload it and hald it back due to physical difficulties. NO devices to help load a magazine can be used. Any rifle and scope can be used and there will still be the 3 classes of ammo so there will still be a free entry for a future match given to the winner of each class. Just so you know every year the winner of this match has used a "B" class ammo.

For the timed match competitors can use any 22 longrifle rifle/pistol including a Single shot, Semi-auto, Toggle, Pump, Lever Gun or Falling Block but will be limited to one (1) 10 round max magazine of no more than 10 rounds at any one time in the gun. There will be 75 targets to hit from 25 yards out thru 197 yards and you will be given 20 minutes to do the best you can. You will not be shooting the smaller targets on some of my racks, targets will be some of my larger ones to keep things moving and not have a shooter get hung up on a really small hard to hit target. Some stages will have their own rack for the timed event but will be easily identifiable.

Shooters for the timed event will dump 100 rounds in a bowl (has to be in the bowl and witnessed), at the buzzer they can load their magazine or start shooting if using a single shot. Starting at 25 yards and always shooting left to right you work your way out thru the racks. I will only call out a miss and not an impact. I'm not spotting for any misses or hits on targets other than for score, up to you to see your own shots unless you get totally lost and I'll help you back onto a target. If I don't say anything keep shooting. I will give each shooter a paper with all rack numbers and distances on it so your data can be entered before it's your turn to start. I will tell you that you can progress to the next distance but it is up to the shooter to keep track of which rack/distance and target they are shooting. If you get lost/confused I may help with rack number but not every one. Up to the shooter to keep track of where they are.

A competitor can take sighters on a larger square plate at any distance and time they feel it's beneficial but those shots come out of their 100 rounds. The final score is calculated based on targets hit, rounds left over (if any) and also the time used to complete the match. So, you need to be accurate but shoot quickly to get as many hits as possible to get a good time or even finish the course. When the 20 minutes are done so are you, all part of the challenge.

The first time I ran this match an old Win 52-C with a 5 round magazine won with two Single Shot shooters coming in a close 2nd and 3rd. We came up with a calculation that when we tried every variable possible it always worked out the most accurate shooter with the most hits, most rounds left over and lowest time won. Was a lot of fun and a lot of different strategies that shooters tried to place higher up, some worked and some didn't but it made for letting the spectactors being entertained. I will only run one competitor at a time but it'll go faster than a regular match and gives for good entertainment while watching the others shoot knowing the timer is on them.

I still have the scores from the last time I ran this match. There a $100 bounty on the head of the current Kings Record score from a couple years ago. Maybe this will entice those speedy, deady accurate PRS/NRL competitors to come show off their talent and dethrone the current King. The top score was witnessed by at least two other competitors with one being Derrick Warren, no one practiced on the range before the timed match or knew exactly what the targets were except me. This match will have the exact same racks as the previous Timed Match to keep everything fair to qualify for the Bounty. Winning the match doesn't win the $100 bounty but setting a new all time Record Score will.

It will be Friday (11th), Saturday (12th) and Sunday (13th) of October. Starting around 8:00 or maybe a tad earlier if it's light enough. I know there are a lot of other shoots that weekend but the weather looks good so far and hope to see a few of you show up to try it out.

Address for GPS is 43985 S. 70 Rd, Belmont, OH It's right off I-70 about 30 miles East of Cambridge or 15 West of Wheeling.

Calculation used for score.

Not one started so figured I would.

Berger 140g Hybrids
51.2g H4831SC
26" 8.5tw Bartlein M24/40
COAL 3.218"
2990fps +/- depending on lot of powder.

Caution, this will not fit a standard 6.5x55 chamber. COAL is too long. You'll need a lot of throat. Barrel started to go after 2400 rounds. Ending COAL after chasing the lands before the barrel burned out was 3.232.

Just out of curiosity, how many firings were you getting on your cases before they wore out??

Glad you made it over from the old site. Not sure most of the other 6.5x55 fans did

I'm running 50.6 gr of H4831 sc under 140 hybrids at 2860fps out of a 24"bartlein.

Im on my 7th firing of the brass with no issues yet. Hoping to get one or two more before the brass goes and ~3000 out of the barrel.

Layton, I'm jealous of 2990!! You must be adding some secret sauce.

How is your muzzle flash? That's a lot of slower burning powder for a short barrel.

I have a 22" Bartlein that will shot both 123 and 140 AMAX's with 48.1 gr of 4831SC. The barrel harmonics are just right with that amount of powder.

Re: 6.5x55 loads

I had a good 123 Amax load with a former 6.5x55 I had. It was a CZ 550 Full Stock.

Keep in mind, the barrel was 20.5", which certainly hurt the velocity and the "throat" wasn't too long.

My load was:

Lapua Brass

CCI 200

123 Amax

COAL in my rifle was 2.530" to ogive - measured with Hornady L-N-L (.010" jump)

46.5 grains H4350

Avg MV = 2768 fps

I worked up to 48.0 grains averaging 2850 fps, but the accuracy node was lower and it was showing some slight pressure signs that high. You ought to be able to go way faster than that with a custom tube and a properly set up throat/chamber.

Thanks for the info. I am trying to come up with a load for a factory Win 70 featherweight in 6.5x55 so I am dealing with only a 22" tube. I tried H4350 to start with and didn't have much luck but that was with some different bullets. I will give this a try and see how it goes. Thanks for the info!

(2) 130 Norma Golden Target

49.3 gr H4831SC

CBTO 2.510 (50/1000th jump)

~2840 fps

-Norma 130 GT likes longer jump in my barrel

Fed 210 GM primer

CBTO 2.550 (10/1000th jump)

KElblys - 6.5x55 GWI

just now fire forming so that load is essentially a std 6.5x55

24" Brux Barrel

46.5 IMR 4350

Wolf Mag Primers

COL 2.92

130 Berger Hybrid

2810 fps

Mild flattening of primer

Honestly a little surprised at the slow speed. I think I will try 2.94 OAL and bump up to 47 gr see what happens.

Was hoping for 3k but barrel could be a little slow. Will be happy with 2900. Not sure half grain can get me 100 fps tho. Maybe 50.

Just shot the Vegas Precision Rifle Challenge while fire-forming brass. Rifle shot amazing almost pulled out a top 10.

Velocity sped up to 2925 once barrel was broke in, more where I expected it to be.

Cant wait to work up a load for the GW Improved. Will keep updated. Hoping for 3100fps :)

ETA:

Forgot to mention that when I chrono first time it was -10 at a match in the mtns so that might have skewed data some

yes it sucks working up a load in the winter but you do what you have to lol.

This isn't really the spot for it, but I figured someone who has posted here might have a pair of go/no go gauges for 6.5 x 55 I could borrow. Have a savage action build with a Shilen barrel that's completed and shoots well for the most part, but gets pressure signs earlier and with less powder than anticipated.

It was built and head spaced with a more knowledgeable friend and we used a factory Lapua round for the go and added a piece of electric tape for no go. I would like to borrow a set of gauges if available and check out spacing to see if that's possibly the issue.

I will gladly pay shipping for anyone that can help me out.

Thanks
