Most everything I read or hear is nothing but a lie when I talk to folks via Radio, in near/far away places that were there, or know trusted types that were there. Then weeks/months or year later a retraction that you have to have a 100X micro scope to see, or a monster pre-amp to hear is placed in a shit stain, most never see or hear. If the goal is to start WWIII or CW II just start that shit and see if ends in a way that's to your liking.
It's long past time to cut out tongues or chop fingers off.

It was always propaganda and public control.
Just back in the 50s and 60s it was more tightly controlled and more plausible and "professionals" did a much better job of pretending to be "professional".

Also folks that grew up around then or before were often very naive and trusted the government and the various official mouthpieces.
There also wasn't a whole lot of ways you could actually go verify for yourself if something was true or talk to folks at the location.

Also to an extent when there was often a single or dual monopoly on "news", they didn't really have to compete for interest, loyalty or views, they were it and tough luck if you wanted something different.
Once they started having to compete, it became essentially fear porn instead of news.

Of course Propaganda had it's golden bright dawn in the 1910s through the 1940s when any questioning of the "official news" was dealt with by Uniform Hangers with guns.

Now it's just that propaganda, public opinion control and disinformation is essentially democratized so every idiot or various splinter group or person with money or fame can get in on the action. The government no longer needs to send Uniform Hangers to deal with "those that have questions", they just tell big corporations to essentially ruin their lives, shun, shame and silence them.

A good read is the "Politically Incorrect Guide to the Vietnam War."

We were invited into Laos and Cambodia to help fight off the commies who were helping and being helped by the NVA and Viet Cong. But the media would make a big deal about it. So, my friend Lee was usually on assignment on the laotian-cambodian border (spent 3 Christmases there) taking out commie camps and tunnels. The media and dems would ramp up their horseshit.

He would exfil and go back to Da Nang. Nixon would come on and say "We are not in Laos. We are not in Cambodia."

Then the media and dem horseshit would die down and back to the border my friend would go. Lee had joined the SEALs for the reason almost all of them recite. "To blow shit up."

My favorite author was Robert Heinlein. He and his wife, Virginia, would travel. Even in Russia. She spoke and understood Russian. So, they could understand what people were saying, not what they were saying to English speakers. Remember the fighter jet that was shot down? The official story was a lie.

In fact, at about 8 significant events that made it to an issue of Time Magazine, not a single report matched what the Heinleins experienced or saw.

So, neutral journalism is a rarity, indeed.

Any media was being used for advertising in the US since the 1800s. Mark Twain already said all you really need to know about “the news”.

“He who doesn’t read the newspaper is uninformed. He who reads the newspaper is misinformed."

In the US, it has always been driven by larger business interests who just want your attention so they can sell space for their advertisers.

In Europe, it was Soviet propaganda disguised as “International Journalists”, hence all the anti-nuke, anti-US sentiment that filled the pages of popular European papers, magazines, TV, and Radio. Their local news was just as unprofessional, inaccurate, cumbersome, and laughable.

Guess I grew up on a different planet, from most here.
We farmed for a living in north central Indiana and everyone around could be trusted, to include print media, back then. Never watched TV much, but the radio on the tractor fender was always on, even sometimes when the tractor was not working, albeit playing country music or R&R from WLS in Chicago.
It was in late 64 when I entered the Army that I got my first real dose of lies and B/S agendas from many. The longer time has gone on the worst it seems to have got, and now its completely out of control. To the point I don't trust or believe anyone I don't know, and many I do know I watch like a hawk. This is all going to end badly at some point, if we don't start cutting out tongues & chopping off fingers,... intense pain or death is a solution that works every time.

i grew up in the 50s/60s. my parents and almost everyone we knew did believe the big 3 and newspapers. there was no real variation until VN got to the front of the coverage. race and women's lib were added in after about 66 (?). there was really no alternatives. nobody read Clemens except as Twain and Mencken was an unknown by most,as was Butler. the 1st real alt views were by Goldwater and the early libertarians. the schools pretty much followed the mainstream.
