I just got my first Kestrel a 4000 series that I bought used in the PX. Once I got it, I did a factory reset and now the DA, Relative Humidity, and Dew Point all show rh uncal. I understand that this is the relative humidity calibrated notice but how important is that? I would like to go to the range and try it out over the weekend but if station pressure will be off by that much then I will wait until I can get it calibrated. Bad data in means bad data out and I don't need to help my lousy shooting anymore than it already is.

Also, I have seen many references to use station pressure instead of DA. I am using TRASOL but am thinking about using DA so that I can verify the Kestrel against an app like AutoDens which provides DA from a local airport for reference. I am still trying to get a good feeling for DA versus station pressure in my area. Any thoughts?

It shouldn't be a huge deal. It does say you have to contact kestrel though to fix it. When I print dope cards, I set RH to 50%. This cuts any error effectively in half. But if you look at it, set it at 0 and then 100% and you will hardly notice a difference. In short, get it fixed but don't sweat it.

I just got off the phone with Kestrel support. At this point, they want me to send the unit back in to have it reconditioned: recalibrate, inspected and cleaned. That cost is $75. I asked him about calibration at home with their rh kit that is $40 and he said it still may not fix the issue. He did check the warranty and said the unit was out of warranty which I think would have gotten the reconditioning service for free.
