Tempest Builds..Lets See em

Thanks for uploading this Will. I haven’t been shooting much at all so my recoil management was a little outta wack. I also waiting to watch the bullet impact the plate before running the bolt. I can drop a couple seconds if I dont wait and run a hair faster. If I get a chance to go practice before my next match I’ll run this again on camera and see if I can drop it to 15-16 seconds.

No problem man, was a damn good run. Like i said hard to find videos showing what can be done with the tempest or just one running honestly. I mean we have George's original videos, couple of guys shooting at the range, and that's it. Next match i shoot i might have to get a friend of mine to video me some just to display the action, though the emphasis will be on speed of the action not hits, because i don't clean stages often lol.

Decided to make a dry fire video of the Tempest. Something i probably should've done a year ago when i got it. I'll see if i can get some footage in a match or training scenario where i'm running it fast to kind of display it's speed like Shane did.

Damn Will, I didn't realize you were just out of highscool :)

Lol without that peach fuzz/amish cut I’ve gotten carded for a rated R movie..

Unfortunately I’ll be 27 in January and hopefully be in the class of 2022 for UMMCs dental school come December then I’ll be lucky enough to be out before 35 depending.

What's everyone using for boreguides with their tempest? I dropped my dewey rod and it fell on the face and bent the end. Seems most bore guides are built around an action, so you just choose 700?

130gr hybrid is no joke. Gun still hasn't missed a beat. Though it needs a thorough cleaning and maybe a trigger change. I like the BnA but been itching to try a Huber.

So i might have come across an issue with the BnA TacSport. It's weird i can't slamfire it to save my life. But if i uncock it and slap the bolt handle with my hand back into battery the firing pin will fall. I've tried over and over again to replicate it by slamming the bolt home but nothing. Strange really.

Sounds like the same issue i've seen with some Huber triggers.

That deer taken in TN? It could almost me mines twin, but that boy looks heavier. You shoot it, Will? Made sure it was dead this year huh ;)

I've got a worked over m700 trigger and a cheap ass flat shoe Timney. Neither give me any issues once I (George) got the firing pin screws figured out.

As far as the pin, I think that they should dimple the pin flat and go with one long screw to engage the dimple and then stake the screw. Or, just press the pin in and capture it with a roll pin. I get that there are advantages to being able to adjust it, but there's too many out in the wild being built by guys who don't know the actions. At this point, the learning curve has probably hurt the sales and soured a lot of people who would otherwise be very happy with the action.

Yup my cousin and I were just looking to go take a couple of doe for some meat, checking fields. He was chasing. I wasn't going to shoot him didn't think he was that big, and said the hell with it. No second guessing this time he was DRT. Shot a tad high hit spine.

I think there is a lot of negative perception surrounding the Tempest for sure. I'd really like to hear George's thoughts on the matter. I know Shane is probably done with his after it going down on him for the second time. All my friends who shoot on big name teams wont touch em. I hate that cause i truly love mine. Though i've only got right at 1000-1200rds on mine.

I have probably 450-600 on mine. Maybe a touch more. Once sorted it's been fine, 100%. The action is a lot of money to have a learning curve like this. Roll out could have been better. An instruction sheet along with the barrel print would have saved most of the negative experiences. Again, I suspect most of the issues were a result of coating the cocking piece and not getting it back together, or not using thread lock on the set screws.

That deer looks to be at or over 140# dressed. He's pretty big for the area I hunt, which probably isn't too far from you. (Dover) Those hocks tell the story... Hopefully he had a chance to spread his genes. Any idea on inside spread?

I've never had the cocking piece come undone but i know that's what happened to Shane at a match. I need to loctite those screws.

I meant to say it was taken in MS, not TN i guess i was answering yes to the fact i shot it ha. Quitmon county about an hour from Memphis and Oxford. He scored only 120.5, mass was there but he wasn't wide at all. I took my Bighorn out today man running into some bad luck. I miss ranged a big buck i'd been hunting for a while, i finally reranged at 366 (was shooting for 600yds, must've hit the backdrop) 123gr Scenars at 2550, saw him hunker down, almost positive i saw it impact behind his shoulder, he hunkered down, though i never heard that "smack" that you usually hear shooting suppressed. Hybrid with the anchor brake on an 18" 6.5x47 isn't necessarily quiet. Going back in the morning to look.

Think dad's bighorn 6.5 SAUM is either off or he is guestimating range because i've had the range finder. Feel bad i had that gun built for him and he's missed quite a few deer with it. LOL we're having a family range day tomorrow and chronoing and walking everything out to 800yds again.

Since I know its been debated a lot ill put my experience in comparing bolt lift on the tempest to the AIAX. Ive owned the tempest and sold it for my AIAX in 2016. To my recollection the AX was a bit stiffer than my AI. Recently a shooting buddy has a new tempest that comes pre coated and we decided to try them side by side.

to me...i could swear the tempest has an easier bolt lift...he thinks they are equal. His tempest has about 1500 rounds on it and a bunch of dry fire, my ai has maybe 1000 and a bunch of dry fire. Definitely feels better than my old tempest.

just thought id throw that recent comparison out. Even though i went AI i still always have a craving for another Tempest.

Both my tempests have over 1500 rounds on them, I shoot local matches 2-3 times a month and never had a hiccup with either. Both are GAP builds.

Mine would not run either of my TT with any of the hangars (0, .010, .020, .030). Runs my Jewell great, but won't run a Timney CE or TT. I'm pretty sure I need to adjust my firing pin based off some earlier posts. My protrusion was cerakoated when the gun was made, so I bet it was not returned to the correct spot when re-installing. I may send my bolt into GAP to have it looked over and adjusted. I'd love to run my TT on it.

To keep the thread up to date and just reporting on the huber 0 hanger is indeed the one. I've zero misfires out of 150rds or so.

Rig has changed a bit too

Well...to help the thread out..

Ive decided to sell my AX and build a dedicated match rifle again. Been craving a tempest ever since I sold my first so the decision was east. Im impatiently waiting for my reamer to come in so I can fit this damn barrel and finish my build.

Tempest action
Mullerworks 7.5T .264 cal marksman (cut to 26")
6.5x47 lapua, .295 neck, .167 freebore
Area 419 hellfire brake
KRG whiskey 3 gen 6 (sako green)
Bix'N Andy tacsport single stage
Vortex Razor G2 4.5-27

The waiting is killing me for this reamer........

Keep me posted on that mullerworks when you work up a load. Friends of mine are starting to use them and the claims of extra velocity have got my attention. Though I’m assuming it’s acheived by a tight bore? Either way 50-60fps faster per lower charge would welcomed with a 6.5x47

IMG_3335.JPG

I've had this for a bit, but haven't been on the Hide due to deployments etc.

Tempest Action
24"1:8 Proof Stainless
Jewell HVR @12oz
6 Creedmoor (sorry I'm not a smith, don't know reamer specifics)
Manners T3FA
SilencerCo Hybrid
Vortex AMG 6-24

I might switch to a brake if I can find one I like. The Area 419 threw me off target with each shot so that got sold after the first match. I have a friend that makes one called the BFF and I have tried it a couple times but when I return from NCO Academy I plan on trying it during a match and see how I like it.

Will do. Ive used their barrel before and for same length/reamer my mullerworks was faster with the same ammo. One of the reasons I picked a Mullerworks...second was out of bartlein, kreiger, hawkhill, shilen the MW was the straightest when one end was dialed in the lathe. Small samples to judge from but this has been my experience.

Pic didn't show up for some reason.

Awesome photo. I need to grab a decent camera next time i'm at a match. I find myself enjoying photography more and more.

If you break camera gear like you do rifles, you're gonna single handedly bring back the economy in the Ohio valley.

On a serious note, PM Jhayesvw about the camera choices. He does wildlife photos and has four Audubon Society covers, and does it on a teachers salary. He can probably point you in the right direction and share how to do it without having to mortgage the house.

LMAO most of that is just bad luck..i think

It was the only color CORE had at the time so I snatched it up quick! Very happy with the color choice though. It grows on you!

Certainly does i really like the CORE exclusive patterns. I really like the elite highlands though they don't make DLC in OD green or greenish/brown which is what i thought would've gone well with it. So i'm going to just go black, also have a proof blank for a 7 SS for the same action so black seems accustomed to it.

Still waiting on my CORE 6.5Creed Tempest build with the PRS-1 in Saltwater pattern. The Badlands and Highlands are both awesome patterns.

Ordered the Xtreme Hunter "Custom" in 6.5 PRC from GAP yesterday with the Tempest as well.......looks like 8 months worth of waiting.

I wish there was a tempest with a floating bolt head and switchable bolt handles. I like our bighorns and love the features that come with them. But if i'm to pick an action based on feeling when running i'd probably pick my Tempest 95% of the time. Just love the 60 degree throw and smooth feeding from an AW mag. If i had the ability or means to switch that into a hunting config by changing the bolthead and handle that would be amazing.

The handle is threaded into the bolt body, so having another one made is not out of the question. The knob can be swapped easily as well. What would you like to change about the handle or knob?

The knob i like just fine. For hunting i'd like to change the angle to start where a remington does just so it doesn't snag on anything. For competition i'd not change a thing.
