Is there a rule of thumb or standard people use when determining the length of muzzle threads? (Shoulder to crown) Most barrels I have on my own rifles are in the .550-.650 range.

There isn't an exact length. I use .6"-..625" as my go to lenght(s). Different suppressor manufacturers have different tolerances and ask for different tenon lenghts. Just depends on what you're doing really. If its just a standard old muzzle brake .6" will work just about every time.

Thanks that's kind of what I have been using too, And I probably should have specified that my question does pertain to a regular muzzle device. I notice that depending on who manufacturer's the muzzle brake, the crown is pretty far back from first chamber of the brake.

All are different, but as mentioned 5/8" ( .625) is pretty common for 5/8" tenons.
Smaller diameter= shorter thread engagement, larger= longer...
A small 9/16" Harrell's brake I use a lot is only a . 500 tenon.

As you noted, also dependent on brake design; JP has a recommended depth for a cup/chamber behind the first baffle of their Recoil Eliminator.

(I was a machinst for 20+ years before I turned gunsmith) Don' t know if anyone said it....but standard thread engagement is..the length of the threads should be the same as the diameter. So, a 5/8" thread diameter should have a 5/8" thread length. 1" dia threads should be 1" long. This provides maximum thread strength. Any longer thread length is merely for critical linear alignment.... In our gun world....5/8-24 threads (traditionally would be a 5/8 or .625" thread length) is .650" long, on average. The bit extra length help with critical alighnment for a bullet to pass clearly through a brake or suppressor with no baffle strike. Cheers! Free trivia..... How wide in a nut for a half inch bolt? Its a half inch wide! How wide is a nut for a 3/4" bolt....first guess don't count, you get 3.
