What do you use to get your gear from the vehicle to the bench?

As I continue to accumulate guns and gear it becomes more and more painful to make multiple trips between my car and the bench when setting up and packing it in. Does anyone use a folding cart or hand truck that they can recommend? I am looking for something that will fold up and easily fit in my sedan yet will let me safely move all my stuff in one go. I'm not particularily sensitive to cost as the stuff that will be riding in it isn't cheap.

Have you considered asking the RO if he would allow you to back your sedan up to the bench to unload?

Otherwise, lots of companies sell carts designed just for your purpose.
Sinclair, Brownells, Midway (their search engine sucks donkey balls) and many others have these cars, you just have to look.

Myself, I drive my truck right up to the benches we are going to use. But then I pull my truck back out, and park it in the lot. When some ass decides that he's just going to leave his vehicle blocking the way of everyone, we use the 'wagon' that we picked up specifically for this purpose.

We bought it from Cambodian Tire up here, IIRC. Steel, pneumatic tires, 200 lb capacity, removable sides. My only complaint with the wagon is the wheel stance is too narrow. I'm looking to either widen the stance, or simply add dually's front and back.

Get an Eberlestock Gunslinger II or similar from the PX section here.

Save some money by buying used. Likely it will be "lightly" used because many find the harness lacking for actually carrying gear on their back for miles and days.

It is a great system though for from truck to bench carry and having all your "necessary" items stored inside.

By necessary I mean all but the kitchen sink.

In my GSII I have an M49 spotter/tripod, two front bags, one rear, two mags each for 5.56 and .308 AR, Borka kit, lens cleaning kit, LMT tourque wrench, ear plugs, cold weather gloves/hat, an IFAK, a bag capable of carrying 2-3 boxes of FGMM, TAB Gear shooting mat rolled/secured to bottom of pack, rifle stuffed into scabbard. Probably got more stuff in there just not thinking of it now which means its likely not used much.

I still carry a range bag that has a comprehensive cleaning kit and some general shooting stuff that I could get along without.

Make a gun cart out of a jogging stroller. We use this for 3gun but would work equally well for what you want to do. You can find them at a yardsale from $10-$40.

The problem is that what I am bringing seems to keep growing...

Usually, 2 to 3 long guns, a spotting scope, tripod, 300 rounds of ammo, multiple front and rear bags, magnetospeed, targets, a lunchbox, and a small to medium sized bag of odds and ends.

I am currently looking at beach and camping carts but am asking because there might be a shooting specific cart that would be perfect that one of you all has already discovered.

You are doing to much at each range session.

Quality over quantity.

Never understood bringing more than one gun to the range at each session.

Sure a class - bring a backup for when your bolt handle tears off the bolt (seen it happen).

If Im doing an full day shoot some place special maybe Ill bring two guns to fire, but Ill take a good break between shooting the two.

Range sessions are ruled by the law of diminishing returns.

Shoot too much fatigue, starts to set in and the quality of your session goes down.

Go to the range with a purpose and work on that chosen goal for the day.

Lots of peeps go to the range for mag dumps, Sure its fun, but I dont know what value they take away from the work.

I use one of these when I cannot drive to the bench and unload the car. When not in use it folds up flat. This will hold all of your gear and you could make gun holders happen if you are creative. I have to park down the street from my house and this makes loading the car so much easier. I don't think it will hold the weight that a jogging stroller will, it is an option though.

Remember when SH used to be guys like LTRdavid and Kmussack who would shoot sniper matches with only what could fit in their alice packs, and be in full ghillie and facepaint? Now we've evolved to the point where we're asking how to carry our gear from the car to the firing line, and what accessories we use to carry our lunches around in... neither is right or wrong, just amusing to watch the trends :)

I have a collapsible wagon we bought at Academy sports a few years ago. It's great for range trips, or really anytime I've got a bunch of stuff to log from the truck to somewhere else. We occasionally use it to haul in groceries.

I try to jam everything into my Mystery Ranch assault pack, but I also have an "insta crate" that I got from Costco that I use to hold my various shooting bags. Works out pretty well, plus it was cheap at costco for like $6.

I have one soft case and one ruck sack, just went through them packing for this weekends match. Here's what I bring to the range. I fell like it's still too much some times. Feel free to critique.

Rifle Case
  • Fix It Sticks
  • Dewey Rod
  • SiCo wrenches
  • Tax Stamp & Trust
  • Suppressor
  • Rifle
  • Bipod
  • Small zip lock with oil, bug spray, sun screen few other odds and end
Ruck Sack
  • Data Board
  • Barricade stop, bipod feet, ECI, and some other crap
  • Kestrel
  • Extra Battery
  • Glasses
  • War Horse Saracen
  • Small Rear bag
  • Sling
  • 50-100 Rounds in MTM cases
  • 2 Mags
  • Hydration and snacks on left
  • Spotter and Tripod lashed to right
I may pack rain gear or extra layer depending on the weather. I'll clip a pillow to the outside if I'm bring it. I used to pack a shooting mat but rarely used it so it gets left out.

GS2 or MR 3DAP and rifle in hand.

When packing my ruck, I ask myself “what haven’t I touched in here for the past two trips?” and then I remove it because it isn’t needed.

Plenty of room in either of those packs to go to the range and run pistol, carbine, and a long gun...or obviously just one of them. If bringing all three, you’d strap the carbine to the outside of the MR pack or carry it and put the long gun in the scabbard.

Orrrrrr I second the jogging stroller. That’s pretty bad ass AND has cup holders.

I don’t really agree with all of that. There are plenty of times when a guy should bring more than one gun to the range. Say you have load work to do for your main rifle and backup rifle. Wife just got a new scope, gotta sight that in. New barrel on your boys gun; gotta start lid work for that. Youngest just started shooting but is too small to carry his rifle safely over the snow and/or ice. And finally, a 22 to shoot the 6x5. If it’s at a range you have to drive a ways to, and your off days are limited, you make the most of a range day.

I can shoot all those guns in a range season without fatigue. I do it all time actually. Last time I took. The creeper out with some friends to another friends house, 2.5 hours away to shoot out to 2800, I brought 6 rifles for myself. Drop verification and all that... if at the end of the day, Im still putting rounds on steel at 2800 with a 377gr bullets going 3000fps, I’d say fatigue isn’t a problem.

No point in trying to make a guy feel bad for not doing what you do at the range when they ask a question.

My solution, to answer your question, it to park the vehicle close if possible. If not, a wagon if I’m carrying a lot. If I’m shooting one, I carry the rifle and a tool tote made out of a milk crate with a bunch of pockets

Sounds like you have a plan with all you bring out there.

That is all well and good.

I know you are a busy person and the limited time you get to shoot you have to make the most of it.

You are right I have projected what I see at my local range on to the OP.

At my range I typically see the guy that brings 3-4 guns and its just a hot mess, more akin to "Hey look at what I have! Anyone want to shoot my gun?" than to trying to work on a problem or get some useable information.
