Maggie’s Man's Best Friend Thread

I had a sad wife and a happy dog last night. I heard something hit my front window so I went to check it out and saw feathers stuck to the window. Didn’t see anything obvious and sometimes they just bounce off and fly away so I put my dog on the leash, brought her out front and told her “Dead bird, find it” to see what would happen.

She proceeds to sniff around real hard then dove in the bushes and came out with a dead juvenile Cardinal, which is the wife’s favorite bird. So now the wife is sad that one of her baby birds died but the dog is happy because she got to retrieve a dead bird.

I didn’t take a picture of her with the cardinal but here is her with a different bird for reference. She was definitely gentle about it, if it hadn’t died on impact her retrieving it certainly wouldn’t have made it worse.

Ended up burying the cardinal in the yard to make the wife less sad about losing one of her favorite birds at her feeder.

Mine loves bell peppers esp. red (except green). Lately she likes the small organic bell peppers, and raw asparagus. Occas. raw broccoli florets. Likes the skin of cooked yams and potatoes; I have to buy the long garnet yams for her and I eat the inside. She actually won't eat peanut butter, pizza with the crust (only toppings), hot dogs, or most bacon. She hates taking ANY meds, right now I have to really hide her Lyrica in cheese; I have to grind her flea/tick pills and put the powder in capsules to hide them, and her CBD oil has to goes on liver or beef, there is no pet (dog) CBD product she will take voluntarily. (Her fussiness is probably a good thing because here are times I cook for her & me when I wouldn't cook for myself.) I have Rimadyl (an Rx anti-inflammatory) for her but have not mastered a way for her to take including even putting bone marrow around it - which is her crack and harder to find these days. Dewormers I have to buy in paste form (dose out), onto glove finger put between gums and teeth as I distract her with a new toy.
She might be a tad spoiled.
my cats are NOT spoiled. they only get 1 can of tuna treat between the 3 at evening time. they DO show up every PM in about a 30 min time frame window.
dogs and cats know shit they have no biz or way to know but...i am told by horsey folks that horses are the same way.

RIP --BobbyJo
She was 15 last week. She came from the first litte of the Westminster winner 16 years ago. The most gentle affectionate dignified pet. We could take her anywhere. There was a fancy mall near me and we took her into any store: Tiffanys, Ralph Lauren, Hermes, Loro Piana etc. Strangers wanted to pet her and take their cild's picture with her.
she was failing for a year and a half. But with expert personal care to our family member we kept her going until she had a probable stroke. She was compassionately euthanized by a very kindly vet, as my wife held her in her lap. This picture is she just a year ago.

My condolences on your loss of Bobby Joe.
It sounds like you had a wonderful life together.
And she took her last breath in the lap of someone she loved.
As hard as that was, it is the most compassionate way to say goodbye to someone who gave their whole life to you.
May the happy memories of your life shared together comfort you at this time.

Sorry for your loss.
same here. actually, despite my love of the herding breeds,i do like poodles. have known several and they were all great dogs. have seen them in AKC obedience trials and they were outstanding. people tell me that they are hard to beat there because they perform so well and are little and cute so get a lot of admiration as a result.

They make poodles for big people too.
Don't forget the standard poodle. They are smart and big enough to hug without breaking them.

I looked into getting one for Her Highness after she knocked out one of her lower canines. 5-6K was a little rich for my wallet. Of course that was a complete replacement. I think the Ti crowns are about half that.
don't know about now,but i know they made steel back in the day. couldn't have been insane $s. we had a GSD in our club that had 2. her owner was a true poor and couldn't have afforded anything like that. they did work fine. i made a retarded move coming out of a blind and she got my shoulder instead of the sleeve. teeth were fully functional. glad she followed the out command.

We had to say goodbye to our Kimber last Friday. Her cancer had taken it's toll the last few months and she stopped eating except for cheeseburgers. She died surrounded by family at home and she is next to our other lab Emma in the yard now. Sorry for your loss. By the pictures it looks like she had the perfect family to share her life with.

Took Cash in to the Vet yesterday morning to have a lump removed from his tail
Got him back home yesterday afternoon and he was very logy, groggy which I was told is pretty normal for a 14 year old pup coming out of anesthesia.

I checked on him through the night and he just wanted to sleep but breathing was steady
He felt a lot better this morning
And is almost back to his old self by noon.

View attachment 8505014My brother in law flew down from Colorado to go on a cruise with us last week and my GSD: Piper took to him like white on rice. I was a bit jealous but also intrigued because she usually doesn’t like strangers. He’s a badass and she must’ve sensed it. My wife knew…hahaha
Great looking pup

I thought I was going to witness a tragedy this afternoon. Instead, it was only very funny.

About 3:30pm the dog and I went out the front door to go get something for dinner. As per Shiloh's usual custom, she used the full length of her leash to assess the front yard and reestablish her scent markers if need be. Nothing unusual about that. I was just waiting for her to finish before putting her in the pickup. My situational awareness was at condition white.

We were both surprised by a little black kid pedaling down the sidewalk for all he was worth. Very fast and dead silent. I had no idea he was there until he popped out from the front of my pickup.

Just as quickly, the self-guided short range fur missile (Shiloh) got lock, tone, and launched on an intercept course. (Akitas have a very strong prey-drive instinct. If something flees, they take it down hard.) Shiloh had plenty of leash to work with. All I could do was watch.

Somewhere between her second and third stride Shiloh realized that she'd targeted a hominin and aborted the launch. Her feet all came down together in a hard stop less than an arm's reach from the kid. She just watched as he went by.

In the meantime, the poor kid was shitting bricks. He wasn't sticking round. nor could I blame him. Shiloh was A LOT bigger than he was.

It was nice to learn Shiloh can override her instinct when appropriate.

I still laugh at the look on that kid's face. His eye's got BIG!
