NATO protection or NATO membership? It matters because Putin has said repeatedly that NATO membership is a no-go. It also seems to me that he already has NATO protection.hundreds of thousands of dead later...because the gravy train is over?

Between 5 and 10 millions of population from Western and Central Ukraine are expected to flee to other countries to survive the winter. Eastern Ukraine under Russian control should be O.K. This was done in response to attacks inside Russia by Western supplied missiles.

ukraine cannot fire himars or atacams without US targeting/coordinates from space. Every time they launch a missle the us knows/approves the target. Russia knows this.
They have zero access to targeting systems.
Ukraine can't fire them without American personell on site.
There are other NATO and non-NATO nations using ATACMS. Those nations have the capability to use the entire system for the Block 1 and Block 1a variants. So whether or not Big Green is helping with targeting seems to probably be more a “are they” question than a “can they”. YMMV.
Yes but let's not forget that those advanced missiles that rely on USA based targeting and control assets,
just like other systems such as the F16 / F35 fighters our Allies fly and such.
None of those work for anyone without the USA allowing them to work for the mission / end user.

If NATO is so worried about Russia then why aren't NATO nations increasing the defense budgets exponentially? Rebuilding their militaries? Calling up Reserves? Instituting drafts?

I quoted this part of the article because it is full of inconsistencies with respect to Rutte and his position in NATO. It appears that he is arguing for Trump to continue NATO and Ukraine support to prevent problems in the Pacific and the US. The mutual defense agreements and cross sharing of technologies, arms and armies by those countries is already out of the bag and it isn’t going back in. To think that victory in Ukraine is the key to stopping that is foolishness or they think Trump is so stupid he will believe that logic. It’s a poorly reasoned fear mongering campaign.

Not sure how many of you know, but Russia and China just kicked EU in the nuts pretty bad, while making a lot of money at the same time. And Russia just cut all direct energy supplies to EU, both oil and gas, although Russia is likely keep doing some under the table deals for friendlies like Hungary and Slovakia. Everyone else in EU, except probably Norway, is very likely out of luck for a long time.
