16-18 inch shorty rifles

Threw together this budget build as a backup/ loaner rifle for any of my buddies/ family that go out with me.

-factory rem700 .308 sps varmint cut down to 18" and threaded.
- krg bravo from here on the hide
- area419 hellfire from here
- area419 curved scope base (20moa)
- vortex high cantilever mount
- vortex crossfire 2 (4-12x50)
- TT special flat.

built it pretty cheap and just going to run whatever factory ammo works good for it. Will probably thread the bolt handle and throw a knob on it this week.

Here's mine. Seekins Havak Hit with an 18" MTU. Swapped the vertical grip out for an Ergo Deluxe, trimmed the cheek rest so I can remove the bolt without folding it, Area419 bolt knob with extension, Crosstac MK109 brake. I'm currently working on designing a full-length fore-end enclosure to 3D print for it. I had some problems getting the barrel done by Straight Jacket initially, had it fixed locally and it's a fuckin' hammer. Best group was 0.24" 10 shot group with factory ammo. Once I can accept funding the ATF I'll get a can for it.

18” 6creed

Bergara action
Q Sidechick chassis (still need to chop a Fix rail to run on top of the fore-end to run clip ons)
Proof steel barrel (once this one is toast, going to a CF barrel)
Leupold mk5 3.6-18 in TierOne medium height mount
Trigger tech diamond
TBAC ultra 7
Atlas

108 eldm handloads just north of 2900fps with some h4350 behind it

Alright, I've been bitten by the short barrel bug. Looking to build something down the road for mountain hunting deer..long hikes, putting on drives etc. Short, light and handy is the goal. Thinking a 16" barrel suppressed is what I'm after. Shots would almost guaranteed to be inside 200 yards, if not 100 where I hunt.

The begging question is what cartridge? Currently considering 7mm-08 (or the AI version), 25 creed or 284 Win. I'll probably be running lighter mono's...100-110 gr if the 25 Creed or 130-140ish gr for the other two, Barnes or Nosler E-Tips, to keep velocity up. Plus I just like monos. I can still drop down a bit in weight if needed to keep velocities up for proper expansion at say 200 yds if the above bullets are too slow.

Not interested in a magnum. Trying to keep the gun pretty light and have no desire to be punished with recoil.

Any reasons for or against any of these cartridges given the application?

Why not just keep it simple and easy and do a 6.5 or 6 creed
Hand load for best performance, factory ammo options galore if you are lazy
Great terminal performance and accuracy
Low recoil

My "inside 200 yard" hunting rifle is an 18" 308 shooting 150 gr Barnes TTSXs (Ruger Gunsite Scout). I've also used a 16" 308 with 130 TTSXs (SCAR 17) which worked just fine. More than adequate for whitetail and factory ammo is easy to find if I don't feel like loading for it.

A short barreled 6.5x47 or 6x47 might scratch the "something different" itch while still getting the job done effectively...though any of the cartridges you listed before are perfectly adequate as well.
Another option since hand loading is an option is a 6ARC. The hand loading opens up the option to really making the cartridge shine.

I'm currently leaning towards the 7mm08 or 25 Creed but who knows. Like I said...this one is probably a bit down the road depending on the funding fairy. But wanted to see if there was a reason I shouldn't go either way as I at least start planning the build out

Been a bit intrigued by a .308 w/Barnes 130TTSX or 120 VOR-TX.
2,900-3,000 fps out of a 16” barrel would be rough on pigs.
I’d not think 300 yards would be a problem, which is 100 further than I’d ever shoot and 200 further than where I’d shoot 90% of the time.

The majority of my hunting (in the woods in central Alabama) is the same situation, and you won't be disappointed with a 308 shooting light TTSXs. Good terminal damage and will exit, even through both shoulders, which is nice in the event that you have to track them through the brush.

18” 338 Federal makes an awesome short barrel combo. 185 TTSX at 2600-2650 is devastating on most anything in N.A…a lot of guys run the 160s and speak very highly of the performance and can run 210s or 225s if you really needed.

I had an old REM 700 Police that I rebarreled for my thermal rig with an 18” Krieger M24 and put it in a Manners LRH. It is silly accurate and hammers game. One pass of 308 Lapua brass through an expander and ready to roll.

Anything 08 based works great with 16-18” barrel…have also done an 18” 6 Creed and have a 16” 510 Whisper in the works for subs that will likely become my next thermal rig

Never seen one with the shorter forend with the full length rail. Sexy AF if you ask me! Might have to cheat on my AIAX and Manners and add one of these to the fold.
406shootist is correct , Q sidechick chassis

the short forend is the one used on the 12.5" barreled fix's and the top rail is actually 2 pieces , long fix top rail chopped and added to the factory sidechick rail

it's a pretty stout chassis and the folder is rock solid , i wish they still made them

I found a run of the mill Remington 700 in 7-08 that I had cut to 16 inches and threaded for one of my hunting rifles. I wanted light weight and shorter so with the suppressor it's near normal length. Just my preference for the woods I hunt and I spot and stalk more often than not anymore too. My shots are usually less than 300 and most are less than 75. I'm just using factory 139gr Hornady Whitetail ammo with consistent results.
