Maggie’s What's Your View II

A bit more clearance under the new lift for the track car vs the truck. 😝

Will ne troubleshooting a transmission sensor; $0.06 part that Porsche wants $25K to fix…they will only swap out the entire PDK transmission, and not simply replace/ repair the defective part. Found an aftermarket part that’s actually better than the one ZF uses in this transmission, but will need to crack the trans case to get to it if it is indeed kaput.

I love having this lift though.

Winter project #3 behind the engine (cam phasers, again) and transmission (C/D/F drum shot) R&R in my truck. 🫤

Well, not the way I planned to spend my Saturday… Daughter-in-law backed into her mom’s car this morning as she was leaving for the gym; of course she (DIL’s mom) is trading in her car on Monday 🤦‍♂️

Had to pull the under tray, and both front wheels to remove the wheel well liners, so we could repair as much of the damage as possible… fog light pushed back, one of the parking sensors pushed in, and the one that was the biggest pain in the ass, the rubber hose/line that feeds the headlight washers was cut, and was spewing washer fluid everywhere.

…we also went over everything since we were under the car, and cleaned up 85K miles worth of road grime, etc. I will say, for a bougie, rather high maintenance trophy bride, she wasn’t afraid to jump in and literally get her hands dirty to help me fix what we could…a pleasant surprise!

The lift got a workout today…. Oil change, plus transmission/diff/gearbox fluids.

i-6gJZG75-X4.jpg

A few little metal flakes on the inside of the oil filter after I cut it open, but not worried; also sent a sample off to Blackstone just to be sure.

Drained the PDK/automated clutch side, as well as both sides of the manual gearbox and diff before dropping the pan.

And new transmission pan, because Porsche wants $450 for a plastic one that’s not reusable. Just did the $250 cast pan that’s the same size as stock vs. the $1300 deep sump billet model from LN, but this one is metal and at least has a replaceable filter element.

And despite what you pervs have been watching on porntube, this is what almost $300 of tranny fluid actually looks like, LoL

I’ve recently learned about Subaru CVT’s and how the supposed lifetime fluid really ain’t.

More over that unless you have a bidirectional OBD tool, when you change the fluid, you can’t tell it to relearn due to changes in the fluid quality… if you go to the dealer, you’re talking about $700 in fluid and the hourly rate for the tech to go through the learning procedure.

Yeah, using Blackstone or somebody like them to do oil analysis is a really good idea, but you should absolutely take the sample from the drain hole in the pan after a few seconds of the initial stream start. Do it the same way every time…

What specifically does a forester do? At first glance, I see a "forester" job title and just picture some lonesome nut, wearing a mushroom hat, on the verge of a mental break down meandering in the woods saying "Yes. Those are trees. That makes this a forest."
But, I know that's not the case.

What do you do in the land management arena?

I determine the stocking rate, unit value, mark timber to sold, determine amount of basal area (measurement of space occupied by stems) trees per acre, road locations. I also write prescriptions or treatment to accomplish land owner objectives (remove BA to enhance regeneration, improve diversity by removing shade tolerant maples, birches, endure the land owner doesn't get screwed by the logging company ect).

I know a couple of guys that work for Wyoming State Forestry. I haven’t been able to figure out what they do other than drive around and cash their pay check.
Some states have an easier time than others.. Wyoming is not a major “timber” state….

Most state guys makes sure loggers are following laws manage state lands (cruise, write prescription, sell prescribed stands timber to loggers ect). A lot of it us a combo forest service and dnr work sell this stand to create wildlife habitat or increase amount of desirable species by remiving undesirables. Hitlers dream only with trees…

Hope you can get some logging done and crate more grouse habitat!

Cool. I knew there's more to it. I just got fired from a tree service company from a guy that goes to my church....So, forestry had been on my radar. Careful of loggers, we're a surly bunch :sneaky: 🤜

Buy a place like that in florida, so many places here look just like that, without the mountain range in the back of course.
Can’t. Don’t have a million dollars in the bank. At best our cottage on the lake in North Louisiana would bring is in the 400K range. In florida, rundown 1550 square foot houses in the Valparaiso/Niceville area are running at 300K. Anything nice is a half mill or more. Prices on the bay are a Million or more. Prices there have gone crazy since Hurricane Michael hit. Don’t want to give this up and at 76 & 75, a major move would be hard to do.

Dude, look on the lakes off of the st johns river all the way south to auburndale.
Your equating that view to a gulf or Atlantic view, crap loads of great property off one of the rivers or freshwater lakes here.
It is far more doable than what you are considering

The entire point is to live very near to him which is Valparaiso/Niceville. Baker at the furthest. (I like Baker, great community and close to Altus). Brenda does not want to live in the country. (Anymore) Just living in Florida won’t do, it’s so big, we could be further from him than now in North Louisiana.

Of course Eglin dominates the landscape so what is left, is expensive. And of course, Eglin is where he works now.

Not even going to talk about the traffic between Crestview and Niceville. In the afternoon on 85, I’ve seen traffic backed up in a stop and go situation for 6 miles, literally half way back to Niceville.

It’s a real shame because it is a great place to live.

What is "Winter Spirit"?
Just the city’s efforts for holiday cheer by decking out the city park with 6 kajilion lights, they light up the old locomotive, there is a massive natural gas fireplace that runs all evening and heats a large outdoor seating area, a dancing area with a pressure pad that is connected to lights in the trees, music blaring over loudspeakers, hot cocoa stand, etc.

Just a local Christmas thing that’s fun for kids big and small.
