Thermals Pulsar vs DNT (or other cheap options)

Can anyone explain what makes the pulsar Telos better than a budget spotter/scanner?

A video would be ideal but it seems like no one owns both.

I want to understand where the extra $1000-2000 is going when the “specs” are basically identical (640, 50mm, 12mk, etc)

I assume there has to be more than just brandingz

I’d include clip-ons as scanners.

DNT, One Leaf, gen one AGM Varmint’s, etc all have been popping up in the $2-2.5k range.

My gut tells me they are destined for the trash pile…but I haven’t seen any actual heads up comparisons of budget thermals vs the mid grade.

I own the Telos XL50 and am a Product Specialist for Night Goggles. One of my roles is testing thermals. Why don't you PM with your cell, and I can talk about good and bad and go over different brands and models. Too much to go in depth on a forum post. It isn't just the Telos but even the Telos and the Axions are priced very differently.

Take advantage of Korey's offer... PM him. He is extremely knowledgeable on thermals and night vision/predator hunting, and has a number of videos on youtube.

I talked with him for over an hour on the phone and still need to make a purchase ,( and look at the technology/improvements that have recently come out.)

I swear every budget thermal review is sponsored.

Agreed.

And while I’d love a sales call…I’d really like someone to actually write up the differences. The specs look comparable (sensor size, sensitivity, display size and resolution, pitch, mag, objective size, etc).

Is it purely software/ease of navigation in menus? Bluetooth vs WiFi…

Some of that matters some of it is unimportant to me and I rather save $2k than have WiFi to download videos etc.

If anyone is willing to go through this in a text response please let me know.

This is a pretty ignorant comment... People still buy cheaper and lower-quality thermals than these listed above, on quite a regular basis. I'm sure they're far from the trash pile.

Based on what parameters?

Details would certainly help, on why you have come to this conclusion, and what side by side comparisons you have made in making this determination.
Based on what I think you get for the price and viewing pleasure, which is all a matter of opinion. They also have great customer service. Mine had a ton of hours and I lost the objective cover so I sent it to them for “service” and they had it back to me in 2 weeks. No charge. Only way I could tell it wasn’t brand new is it had the same serial number. I’m currently using xp50lrf. You can see more detail of the terain, but I don’t feel like the hot spots are as obvious way out there, like 1500 yards plus.

I wonder if perhaps the more mature manufacturers priced their offerings at a higher initial starting price because they could? Less competition means they can set their price points.

As more competition comes in, price points come down to compete.

The other theory is that DNT for example is cutting costs somewhere versus Pulsar. I have no information or evidence to back that statement up but this coincides with your question. How are these optics with seemingly very good specs coming in at their rather affordable price points?

What are we giving up? If anything?

I don't work in sales, so my calls aren't Sales Calls. In fact, if you want to buy a thermal, I have to provide you with a totally different number.

What I do is test thermals, help with technical questions, and am a professional coyote hunter. The reason I offered a phone call is a cursory write up is simply going to lead to more and more questions. What I was trying to do was teach a man to fish vs give a man a fish. As Dibbs mentioned, most of my calls go far past 1 hour.

My offer still stands for anyone who wants to drill down into this stuff.

Here is a very generic answer. Not all sensors are created equal. An even within a sensor, not all equipment such as quality of Germanium, quality of internal components, firmware and more is equal. On paper, there are a lot of brands and model that look similar. Even if you compare a Pulsar Axion, and a Pulsar Telos which have similar specs, the Telos has a better image. I have tested so many models that on paper look good, in real-world situations you realize they are very different.

As for some other differences, Pulsars are made in Europe with a French Lynred sensor. Many of the other options are made in China and imported in. Notice, I did not say this was good or bad. That is up to each person to decide. There are sanctions on some Chinese components and companies at this time. Many people don't want to hear it, but it is definitely more of a gamble when a person buys a thermal that relies on technology that is either under current sanctions or may be in the future. A warranty means nothing if the company isn't around to support it or if they can't import parts to fix.

Although I really like the Telos, I say the good with the bad. It is fairly large, and it is a bit heavy, and it has proprietary batteries. I still really like it, but my model recommendation will vary on the need. Not ONE thermal is right for everyone. Field of View and Base Magnification have a huge impact on what model would work better for different applications, terrain, etc.
