Interesting mag and configuration…

Loach pilot, probably late ‘60’s or early ‘70’s. Pic from random Facebook posting.

Some are saying this was a 30 round mag that some of the SF and aviation guys bought mail order from US. 30 round at mags. I know they have been available, if not issued.

Some are saying that these were “field conversions,” putting an AR feed lips on an AK mag to increase capacity (which seems unlikely as AR mags are aluminum and AK mags were steel (and some Bakelite/polymer).

Any insights? Also interesting Grenade launcher configuration. Like an early 203.

Anything you recognize? Or built?

And I considered it might be an AI image… but looks more like an old Kodachrome.

Cheers, Sirhr

Did some more digging and found some info on Reddit…

Interesting SOG picture second from bottom. Caption says the mags were taped… but not sure how that would work! Looks more like someone welded a couple together?

Learn something new every day!

The launcher is an xm148
The XM148 was an experimental 40 mm grenade launcher developed by Colt Firearms as the CGL-4 (Colt Grenade Launcher). Colt manufactured the launcher for field testing during the Vietnam War era. After problems with the experimental design were discovered, the XM148 was replaced by AAI Corporation's conceptually similar M203 design, which became the primary grenade launcher used by the US armed forces and others until its ongoing replacement with the M320
