Gunsmithing Threading and clambering a barrel with out the action

Well said Chad, exactly my thoughts on it. I also wont let a rifle leave the shop without putting a few through it, nice having 100yds in the side yard to also confirm accuracy when possible.

Gunsmithing Threading and clambering a barrel with out the action

I wouldnt necessarily call this a downfall, at least not for me. I wouldnt be entirely comfortable chambering a barrel without the action in hand for liability purposes anyway (not just this case, in general). If one number was written down wrong, or whatever, we're talking about 0.002" that...

Gunsmithing Threading and clambering a barrel with out the action

Well Gary, to test this out I tried screwing your barrel on 3 other actions I have on hand and none of them headspaced perfectly (all closed on go, but also closed on no-go). This is strange considering the thread lead starts in the exact same location on all Defiance's. I would be able to...

Gunsmithing Nothing better than finding the perfect tooling!

I think you're confusing me with someone else, I never had long pads between the chuck and barrel. So you can thread a tenon for a defiance without a relief? I'd love to see that. I have a short spider, I prefer the 4-jaw even if I have to put an extension on the barrel to use it. I don't see...

Suppressors Thunderbeast brake attach suppressor ever get stuck

Don't confuse the TBAC brake attach series as quick detach cans, as they are not. They are as good, actually better than a direct thread due to the much larger thread diameter and the conical shoulder to square everything up. This also protects the can threads on constant removal/installation...

    Gunsmithing Gunsmithing deals thread

Anything better than vipten and vipups combined right now? For Enco that is, or MSC would be fine, need some more devcon

Gunsmithing Nothing better than finding the perfect tooling!

chipsfan , I have tried flooding it with my chambering oil, but threading at 370+ rpm sure makes a mess flinging oil all over the place. It seems to work just as well just brushing Vipers venom on in between passes.

Suppressors ? About threading a barrel.

If your 30P-1 is 5/8-24 then Id just have it threaded 5/8. If you ever want to get a dedicated 22 cal can though you may choose to do 1/2-28 and use an adapter. Let me know if you need somebody to thread it, 2 day turnaround.

Gunsmithing Nothing better than finding the perfect tooling!

I just had them wire EDM'd the other day. 3/8" brass rod pressed in there. Sure is nice not having the soft pads fall down into the sump every time. I cant take any credit though, saw it in a picture of Gradous' setup.

Gunsmithing Nothing better than finding the perfect tooling!

After several years of using AR Warner HSS threading because it was working just fine, I finally decided to see if something better would make a difference. It sure did, finally found the perfect threading setup, at least for me. Im sure the new lathe has a lot to do with it, but the tool is...

    Gunsmithing Chatter on barrel threads

Sure maybe something will screw on, that doesn't make them ok, unless you're not charging someone for the work.

    Gunsmithing Chatter on barrel threads

Did they look kind of like these? Somebody sent me this picture of a reasonably well known place was proud enough of them to post them on their Facebook page.

    Gunsmithing First Muzle brake.

I didn't mean an oversize bullet, but you're not leaving much margin for error of them coming out perfectly straight. Bullets with inconsistent jackets can easily come out slightly off axis, and with two pieces of paper as your clearance you're not giving much margin. My thing is, sure maybe it...

    Gunsmithing First Muzle brake.

The sad part is those die cut threads look nicer than some single point threads that come out of some shops. I agree with Sonic that it wasn't the correct way to do it, but I think with a little excess bullet/bore clearance it's not that big of a deal. I would highly advise against ever trying...

    Gunsmithing carbide finishing reamer

Gotcha, so not too much different than HSS. Do you like them so much because of a better finish or just longevity? Ive always wanted to try a reverse spiral fluted reamer but just havent gotten the balls to do it yet. I feel like chip evacuation would be great with a flushing system with...

What RPM do you run the carbides at? On a manual I assume with flushing system? What reamer holder?

Gunsmithing 40hp Rotary Phase Converter Startup

I may be next on the giant phase converter train. Just talked to my power company about getting 3 phase for potential cnc. I don't even live THAT far out, and they said minimum of $60k to bring it to me. I just started laughing, then cried for awhile.

    Gunsmithing Lets Talk Lights

Funny you say that, my day job is a company that manufactures UV phototherapy machines that use 48 6ft UVB or UVA lamps in them. I could bring a few of those home and get a nice tan while Im working in the shop, all while "curing" psoriasis if I had it. Im thinking Im just going to grab some...
