    Gunsmithing Questions for smith

Although that sounds great, getting your barrel fitted to your can. There is no substitute for a 3A ring gauge, and Mark will tell you exactly that. Say they fit your threads to your can, and it happens to be on the loose side. Then down the road you get another can, low and behold your can...

    Gunsmithing Lets Talk Lights

Yeah I don't mind fluorescent, I am pretty sure mine now are just loud because they are probably 15 years old at least, and magnetic. I bought a new T12 fixture for above my loading bench and it is quiet. I'm guessing I would probably need two rows of three 2x4 fixtures, I don't know if I can...

Gunsmithing Decent setup for a new builder?

Somewhere betwen 12x36 and 14x40. Its tough to find a compromise between nice heavy machine, and short headstock.

    Gunsmithing Questions for smith

Depends on the suppressor. The majority of them you can just say 5/8-24 x 0.600" long class 3A. But its best to get the thread specs from the can mfg and give them to the smith to be safe. Be sure your smith is competent in threading for a suppressor. Indicating off the OD or holding in a...

    Gunsmithing Shipping a lathe

Preparing to ship a Jet 13x40, should I remove it from the base? The pallet I made is 3' wide, far wider than the lathe itself. Was just thinking I would make it very clear on the crate that it is top heavy and which end is the heavy end. It only has to go about 500 miles. I was also going...

Gunsmithing Barrel threading question and muzzle break recommendation

The APA only come bare as 99% of the time get contoured to the barrel, meaning material ends up getting removed. This means that if you want it to match the barrel it will have to be coated after installation.

    Gunsmithing Lets Talk Lights

I want to replace my old 8ft T12HO magnetic ballast lights that came in my shop, but want some opinions. My shop is 20x30 with 9ft ceililngs. Currently there are 4 of the dual T12ho fixtures with white reflectors and they are hanging about 1ft from the ceiling. I just cant stand the humming...

Gunsmithing Decent setup for a new builder?

I thought the same thing about the 509 until I stopped at a showroom to look at one, was greatly disappointed seeing it in person as it looks like such an amazing machine on paper.

Gunsmithing Barrel threading question and muzzle break recommendation

The APA little bastard looks good and is probably one of the most effective, but it's extremely annoying to the shooter and anyone around. Karl Kampfeld makes a nice tri port similar without the rearward angle so it's not quite as obnoxious. As far as a shop, I don't know of anyone down there...

    Gunsmithing Minimizing mess whilst flushing.....

You are correct, I usually just reduce the pressure when the micrometer gets within squirting range. I've seen guys use the bottom of water bottles, but it gets in the way of adjusting the micrometer stop.

    Gunsmithing PTG Bolt Problem

I will say I had a much better experience ordering a reamer yesterday. Spent plenty of time with me discussing dimensions, then once we decided on a spec I had a print in my email within 10 minutes and a sales order within another little while. Seems like maybe they are TRYING to get their...

    Gunsmithing PTG Bolt Problem

Heres a new fun fact about PTG. They now charge when you order, even if youre going to wait 6 months for a bolt. Something about being PCI compliant?

Gunsmithing Hard Cocking rifle? Please help

Does the bolt come back out if you push it forward and not close it (not all the way back out, just the distance you feel the pressure? Just want to make sure its actually spring pressure youre feeling and not a tight counterbore.

Gunsmithing rebarreling an already trued action? ?

I dont think the debate is whether cutting the threads has a measurable effect on accuracy, its the fact that if you are going to do something, do it right. If you already have the action dialed in to cut the face and lugs, why not take an extra 15 minutes and cut the threads? At least then...

Gunsmithing rebarreling an already trued action? ?

Well said Mark, you always know how to use your words so well. Here's an analogy to help. You take your engine in to be rebuilt after a valve craps out and scratches the cylinders all up. They slap new piston rings on it and send it back to you because it runs, and charge you for a full...

Gunsmithing Help me find an Indicator

I tried just putting the stem in a boring holder, but that was too low. Now it's in a "bracket" that came with my long reach Mitutoyo. Having it in a tool holder is the only way to roll, as long as your post is square you don't ever have to mess around setting up the indicator to be the right...

Gunsmithing Help me find an Indicator

Some new tool porn, finally getting to a point I'm pretty happy with my lathe tooling, only took 4 years haha. SECO 3/4" MDJNR holder and Iscar DNMG432 ic907 inserts (55° profiling). This will make the few times actually using a center much easier (bolt knobs) And couple NOGA bases
