Gunsmithing best way to fill in metal knicks and chips?

Re: best way to fill in metal knicks and chips? If the gouges are deep I'd TIG them up and lap the face smooth in a lathe with a sanding block. If they're just shallow scrapes and scratches then use some white epoxy and then lap it smooth in a lathe with a sanding block then refinish.

Gunsmithing What lathe for the home gunsmith?

Re: What lathe for the home gunsmith? Got a little Logan 24" here for small jobs and it works great. Older lathes in good condition will usually do better and last longer than a lot of the newer import lathes. Lathes and other shop tools were usually made much stronger and heavier when they...

    Gunsmithing brake i.d. question

Re: brake i.d. question For standard thread-on brakes you'd want to be around .030" over. Anything between a #Q and a #R drill bit will be good.

    Gunsmithing barrel oxiding

Re: barrel oxiding Rule of thumb is that you should always thoroughly scrub and clean any barrel after parkerizing, BO, or any other finish for that matter. A bore brush and any cleaner will rip though BO.

    Gunsmithing Fill in pitted barrel

Re: Fill in pitted barrel White epoxy or JB Weld. Apply some to the pits then either stirrup polish the barrel or lap it on a lathe. I've had a few pitted old .22 barrels come through here and that's the best fix I've found for them if you'd going to apply a spray finish like Duracoat. Be...

    Gunsmithing Duracoat problem

Re: Duracoat problem Really shake the hell out of it. Some of that Duracoat is really a bit separated and takes more than the casual shake to fully mix up. Had a bottle of matte black awhile back that was like that, it started out flat black and towards the end of the bottle it went to...

    Gunsmithing Drilling hardened steel

Re: Drilling hardened steel Generally the way to do it is use a small torch tip or a carbon electrode to spot heat (and anneal) where you want to drill the hole. It softens the metal at the drill spot so that the tooling will cut it. If I was getting items made from AR500 I would just have...

    Gunsmithing buying a used lathe

Re: buying a used lathe No chuck either, that's going to set you back some $$$. I've rebuilt lathe that were in worse condition, but the missing parts are going to cost you a lot of $$$. You could get a better lathe with all its parts intact for less than you'd tie up in that rust bucket...

Gunsmithing Painting a Savage Tupperware stock?

Re: Painting a Savage Tupperware stock? Wipe down the stock thoroughly with a rag soaked in acetone. It will remove any oils/crud and will soften the surface of the plastic a little and help the Duracoat bond much better.

    Gunsmithing crowning question

Re: crowning question Yeah, this isn't something you want to do by hand with some Home Depot countersink. Send it to a smith and have them crown it right. A countersink will also swage a bit of metal into the crown area causing some unevenness. A crowning tool will cut metal outward from...

    Gunsmithing Removing a stubborn barrel

Re: Removing a stubborn barrel Receivers and barrels are heat-treated for strength and hardness, be really careful applying heat to either. Some alloys can change temper as low as 300-400 degrees. Worst case, use a heat gun and warm the receiver ring up a little, you don't want the gun to...
