1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

Re: 1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

It depends on the bullet you plan to shoot. 210 and 220's it would be pretty good, 190's I would probably choose the 10. I'm speaking of Sierra bullets by the way.

Re: 1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

I would say the 1 in 9 should work for the 240 SMK and the Barnes TSX 200. From the Berger Ballistic book by Bryan Litz, there are also other exotic monolithic bullets from boutique makers that it can stabilize.

I was never able to get the 200 TSX to group properly with my 1 in 10 .300 Win Mag.

Re: 1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

I have a 1 in 9 twist 300 win mag, it shoots most anything over 180grs well up to and including the 240 SMKs, I mainly shot 208 AMAXs though because I can push them faster and they group better for me.

Re: 1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

I'd take the 1:9, and even the 1:8 if I didnt have to wait extra for it. "Overstabilization" really isnt possible, and the extra drift you get is minimal, plus entirely deterministic - meaning truly calculable and repeatable. Most say 1:10 is too tight for a 308....well, that hasnt stopped me or many others from great success. Plus, it guarantees proper stabilization in all conditions and gives you headroom for longer/heavier bullets.

My $0.02

Re: 1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

in a agi gunsmithing course the instructor said stabilization is a good thing you cant have to much, even with lighter bullets, but you can have not enough, with heavier bullets, so i wonder why most 300,s are 1-10 and 308;s are 1-12 ? some new model 308;s are starting to use 1-10 but ive yet to see any thing but 1-10 in a 300wm, if Im gonna rebarrel & get to pick , I want to choose correctly , thanks for all the responces,

Re: 1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

I would go with 1:8. Why not be able to shoot everything including the latest ultra-very-super-low drag 230 Bergers?

We have been trying 300 AAC BLACKOUT in 1:4 twist and can't see any difference in accuracy from that to 1:8.

I also have a 1:4 308 barrel but have not built it into a rifle yet.

Re: 1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

Alan brown builds MK13 that has a 10 twist. But I have seen a rifle on here with 11 twist and he is shooting the 208A just fine. You go with to mush twist and it will slow it down.

Re: 1-9 twist for a 300 W M ?

I just started some testing on the new Berger 230 Hybrid OTM in my Surgeon Scalpel (1 in 10 twist). Not ready to give any details yet but, in overview, I am working up the ladder with Retumbo. At 78 grains I have 2850+ in velocity. 1 in 10 twist is stabilizing them well so far. I've never tried the 240 SMK so I have no idea about how they would do in 1 in 10.
IMHO, an aftermarket barrel's advertised twist rate can be trusted much more than a rifle manufacturer's. I've seen the latter not stabilize bullets they should and found the twist rate not to be as tight as advertised. Never seen happen this with a high quality Bartlein, Kreiger, etc.
