Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

what's going on boys and gals... just got another good idea / twist to the plot that might give some of the AK-47 / SKS boys and other cartridges that might not do this shootout to join in on the fun on the original post. You don't even need to make the top ten either!!!

HONORABLE MENTION #2, They may or may not be the current leader, but they are representing their CARTRIDGE to the fullest!! Hell, you don't even need to make the top ten! Just get us 6groups / 5shots as per the rules with your AK-47 & iron sights and you're golden!! $hit, use an UMP45 for all I care!! Heck, nothing said it can't be a .22 rim fire right?? TIME TO BUST OUT THE .50 BMG!!! It just needs to be semi-auto!!

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

you wouldn't happen to have a .50bmg you could take with you also???

just waiting for someone to do this... would be so friggen awesome! LOL

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

Elfster, here is my 2nd attempt. Nothing huge, but an incremental improvement over my 1st submission. I gain a bit on the average, but give up a few thousandths on the best group. Still looking forward to getting 6 under .5.

Also you may want to correct the description of my gun. My gun is a .264 LBC-AR (Les Baer's variant of the 6.5 Grendel chamber). I can only wish I had a 6.5 Creed in a gas gun.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

sorry about that with the .264 LBC-AR.... just figured it was a 6.5 creed... all fixed. Good shooting btw and improving your average. I'm looking forward to hitting the range next week. Should be back in town and I'm running a cold / sickness like you wouldn't believe.

Jon Lester & Squin!!! think you two could post a pic of your cartridge?? you two have some funky non-typical semi-auto stuff going on...... well, atleast for me it is.

The 6 Creedmoor is the same thing as the 6.5 Creedmoor just necked down to use a .243/6mm bullet instead of the .264/6.5mm. Uses a AR10 platform!

The 264LBC is just like the 6.5 Grendel just a different name to get away from all the BS that was tied to the Grendel when it first came out. Uses a AR15 platform! If you want a different cal in a AR15 I would recommend this round as it is a lot of fun until the wind really picks up.

The 6 Creedmoor is the newest of the two but you just must live under a rock elfster!

I will post this until they get theirs up they I will delete it. Top one is a 264LBC/6.5 Grendel with a 123gr Amax. Bottom one is a 6.5 Creedmoor with a 140gr HPBT just think of a smaller bullet.

But it will give the size comparison side by side.

Nothing "funky non-typical" about 6.5 Grendel. Its been around for a while. It now is a SAAMI spec cartrige. Hornady and Black Hills make some decent factory ammo for the Grendel as well. It is a great cartridge for the AR-15 platform and very easy to load for.

Technically my gun is not a 6.5 Grendel, but its damn close. So close that it can chamber any 6.5 Grendel ammo I've tried. Its different in that Les Baer made some minor changes to the chamber design. Before the SAAMI spec manufacturers had to license the right to produce the Grendel. Some, like Les Baer, decided to use a slightly modified chamber (tighter neck, 1.5 degree throat) and do their own thing.

There are lots of threads on the Grendel here on SH. You can see a photo in the link below.

6.5 Grendel Cartridge Guide

Of the 4 ARs in my safe the Grendel is by far the most accurate. Still waiting on a Rock River Predator Pursuit upper that I hope will give it a run for its money.

Damn, now I want a 6 Creed in AR10. Maybe a Mega MATen upper/lower and Krieger barrel. It never ends does it?

Took relatives out shooting so was babysitting instead of shooting.

I'll try to get some me-time at the range this week though, I rebarreld my 10/22 and want to give it an honest go.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

looks pretty darn good so far... i'm telling ya, those dpms bull barrels are rather impressive. my old rifle that i sold was a LR308 with a 24" bull barrel and it was amazingly accurate, but it was crazy heavy... much more heavy than my LMT and that's saying a lot. Looking forward to your future results.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

Throwing my hat in the ring on this one. Have a new build that's almost done. Decent collection of parts type frankengun, built for speed and 3gun, with a light profile barrel, not for accuracy per-say. Not much in the line of ammo, going to go at it with east block 55g first and see how it goes.

Want to say, congratulations for shaking things up over at the that other forum. So many ready to say their 10.5 whatever shoots 1/2 all day long. Or, shorter barrels are more accurate than long barrels, stuff like that, and it was amazing how fast, first the quiet set in, second how fast your post was locked.

I have always liked DPMS, and so many DPMS haters, good grief! Very happy to see one on top even though that is not what I shoot.

I will get to a range just as quick as I can. Still have to: torque the barrel, mate the receiver ramps with the extension, sight in the cheap scope, then shoot some break-in stuff. But I will be posting with this no matter the result I have. Talk is cheap, and so am I, but not to cheap to give this a try!

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

There are so many posts that come into that site, if it is still there it's likely way, way back somewhere.

Their stuff is more built for fighting room to room rather than accuracy. Not that there is a lot of room to room fighting going on around here lately, but if there ever is, they are good to go.

Accuracy is more something they assume they have, and are not real excited about finding out if the assumption is correct. Much easier to say, "what I have is better and more accurate than what you have," proving it is another matter that is better left for, "later," much, much later.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

Elfster actually works for ammo makers and this a plot to have us burn up a bunch of ammo.

This is going to cost me waaay north of $100 to play this maddening little game...

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

lol, i wish i worked with a company that has something to do with rifles and ammo!! yeah, if you don't reload, it is going to cost about $25 to $30bucks for factory ammo every time you go for a 30 shot entry (well, for .308 that is).... By reloading, i'm able to get my ammo price down to about $8 dollars per 20rounds (that's if you already have the brass)....

then again, i could just be working for hornady and this is all just my evil plot to increase ammo sales!!! mmmmmuuuuuaaahahahahaha, you will never know!! JK

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

Let me ask, are you surprised that a DPMS is leading? There is so much trash talk over on that other site about DPMS, I kinda' expected the barrel to fall off or something, before he could finish his 30 rounds. Very happy to see such great results instead.

I am hoping that the current info, current leader, brand rifle, number of participating, best group, average size of group, etc. gets over there some how. Perhaps you could post a short summary over there, of how your challenge is going so far?

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

I've actually owned in the past a LR308 with 24" bull barrel, and a .308 dpms oracle. Both were great rifles and I had absolutely no problems with either one of them. I learned a lot about the AR platform with those two rifles. Ended up selling both so I could purchase my LMT and I'm glad I did. My LMT is somewhat the combination of my two rifles that I sold... Somewhat carbine tacticool and longdistance precision shooter.... Both of my old DPMS rifles shot great and was rather accurate. If you're on a budget, then you can't go wrong with a dpms IMO. AND to be more honest with you, look at rock river arms... RRA makes one hell of a rifle for the money.. I love my RRA that I currently own.... The DPMS .308 recon is prob one of the best bang for your buck OFF THE SHELF rifle you can purchase today IMO. I would have no problem buying another DPMS rifle or telling my friend to do the same if on a budget..... Now, with that said here comes the big BUT.... will every single dpms sweet 16" bull barrel rifle shoot like Dmpowder's rifle? Prob not or close to it..... When DPMS is pumping out 10times the amount of rifles some of those rifles i'm sure will be grade A shooters, and some not so much... Just cross your fingers and hope your rifle is a top notch shooter... Really tho, this kinda goes for all rifle manufactures unless they have really hard core QC.... I think dmpowder has one of those "grade A" diamond in the rough type rifles... ON THE OTHER HAND, i've always said IMO it really is 40% shooter, 40% rifle, and 20% ammo... I think it is safe to say Dmpowder knows his shit even tho he is doing what he is doing with a "DPMS" lower budget rifle. I think that 40% shooter and 20% ammo is really shining thru his rifle. Not to get me wrong tho, his dpms sweet 16 rifle is a real shooter and i'll kick dmpowder in the head if he sells that damn rifle... or atleast he better sell it to me!!!

As for AR-15.com, the people that post on that forum are a whole different breed of AR shooters... Some of them really know their shit, and the rest are just a bunch of forum trollers looking for trouble which annoys the hell out of me... Reason why you will most likely find me on sniper's hide rather than AR-15.com. The guys and gals on the HIDE are much more serious and informed IMO.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

Here are 6 targets from my load development today, shot with a Centurion Arms Mk12 Mod1 with Nightforce 2.5-10x24mm scope. Best group of .532" with average group of 1.120". I figured out what loads this rifle likes (going with 23.9gr Varget) and I will submit another target with 6 'like' load targets.

This was a little more difficult than I expected with the small 2.5-10x scope but was very fun nonetheless! Hopefully next time I can keep them all sub MOA!!!

Spuhr Mount
.308 FGMM 168 grain

Largest Group 1.256" #6
Smallest Group 0.624" #2

Group Average 0.914

Interesting little "test" the Elfster has started. I admit that I used to cherry pick from my groups. I would shoot 8-10 groups, but only really look at or measure the best.
This little game makes you look at ALL of the groups, warts and all. If you shoot 2 or 3 groups around 1/2" out of 10 that's great but, WHAT'S THE AVERAGE. Look at those 1.25 " groups. Yeah, leave it to the Elfster...

At least we've got a couple of groups from JPE.

I'm going again Thursday, will try a couple of things.

Different targets, just use a dot.

Get away from the old guy shooting a .300-378 Weatherby next to me. No shit. We live in Florida, what the fuck is that guy going to shoot? Not steady or with any pattern, just a random assed version of The Guns of Navarone.

Will try some of my Black Hills 168s, see what they do. Also some FGMM 7.62X51.

Here's the fucking pics. I just love group #6. That's some great shooting. LOL.

I wouldnt be so hard on yourself, that's some damn good shooting. I think people that haven't tried this shootout will understand how hard it really is to just get sub-moa on all 6groups, let alone .5moa all day long. One thing is for damn sure it is not easy. Looking forward to your next run. See if you can edit your posting with a pic of your rifle. Thanks for the run!

I think it would be interesting on how many people have tried and not posted their results.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

this is uncalled-for.

I would first and foremost like to thank 997/2man for taking the effort to post the results. I'll be the first to admit that I've had similar results with my LMT. Some days are better than others and I'm looking forward to 997/2man second run. This test is in no way easy. It takes more balls to post your results than to knock a man down without posting your own. Too many factors play into this game above and beyond the rifle being used.

Thanks 997/2man. Good job, good shooting, and nice rifle.

997/2man, have you tried 175 gr FGMM or 175 gr Black Hills. I ask because my REPR with 1-10 tw barrel did not like 168's, but shot 175 SMKs better. I need to dig the REPR out of the back of the safe and try this exercise again.

Nice looking stick by the way.

Thanks, Man. Going to try some diff weights/brands.

Shoots softer and weighs less than my EMC.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

IMO, one of the biggest monkeys on your back during this test is barrel heat. Your group size will go all to hell if you don't let your barrel cool down between groups especially if you are not using a bull barrel. I would say 5min min between groups if not more.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

Elfster you hit the nail on the head. I get my best results with slow, controlled fire and a cooling off between strings. Semi's lull us into a false sense of time, and we tend to forget the fundamentals rushing from shot to shot.

Fortunately you did not put a time constraint on us! After each shot I force myself to reset my sight picture, check my grip and cheek weld, load the bipod properly, take 3 breathes. You know the drill. If I don't do this by the 4th or 5th shot I'm holding the gun on target. Shoot five and take a five minute break.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

very nice work boone3380! welcome to the leader boards!

you know what is funny, i think my next rifle purchase is going to be a RRA varmint A4 24" bull barrel upper for my existing RRA tactical operator 2 rifle. I'm really looking forward to it once I get the cash. Can't go wrong with a RRA, especially for the money. I think a lot of people give them crap for not being "mil spec", but they are a wonderful rifle for the money.

great job and i'm sure you will get an ear full from "line-of-departure". Man alive, you are even kicking me down a notch on average. I need to get my $hit together!

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

I think if we are not careful, these guys with bull barrels might sweep the boards. I think it is safe to say that bull barrels are much less effected by barrel heat and less barrel vibration, hence the reason why a good portion of the top ten are already bull barrels. Great on the bench, but not so much on the run.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

oh my,,, maybe i'll just keep an eye out for a whole new rifle then on kentucky gun company or something.... I see they have an 18" on there right now, but I really had my heart set on a 24" bull barrel bench rifle in 5.56.

The friggen 18" bull barrel varmint A4 they have listed is actually on sale for $981 bucks on sale, in stock, and with free shipping! If it was only about 6" longer!! How many times has your woman told you that before!

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

Rbhoover, nice rifles! I really like that brake. May I ask what it is? Also, whats that thing-a-ma-jig behind it?

I just got back from the range a few hours ago. NOT a good entry, today. My target had an average of 1.08" with a best group of .611" and a worst group of 1.427". I'm not sure what was going on, but I suspect I was getting sloppy on my trigger pull and follow through. I know it isn't the gun because later that day, I put 5 rounds into a 2.4" group at 400 yards and a following 13/15 rounds onto a 5" plate. (Lost a couple because I didn't notice the wind picking up.)

Anyways, this target doesn't get a picture. Too lazy to upload it.

That's a collar for an Ops Inc suppressor.

Its a Ops-Inc 12th Model Brake which is the standard for the Mk12 Mod0 and Mod1 rifles. I have a KAC Flip-Up Front sight on the front of the rail that works in conjunction with the KAC 2-600m Rear Sight.

I have it sighted in with the iron sights and its actually pretty fun to shoot that way!

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

The 24" is a little heavy, I think about 9.5 pds. I prefer heavy rifles anyway. I think if I was getting another one I'd get the 24" Varmint EOP. I like the taller rail after seeing one in person.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

really? wouldnt you rather get a nice larue cant'd mount? my shop in town actually has a 20" EOP in stock. Would be a total car trunk, to bench, back to car trunk target rifle so weight is not an issue here.

Re: SemiAuto, 6 groups, 5shot each, 30 round SHOOTOUT!

With the rail milled into the reciever has to be foolproof. I'd like to put a Magpul PRS on mine but I don't want to change the rings out. Mine is set up pretty good right now with the ACE. I like the cheek weld on the foam. Just never happy, guess it's the grass is always greener thing.
