Range Report 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

What cartridge can push a 6mm 115gr DTAC at around 3200fps and also feed from an AICS (preferred) or AW magazine?

Ideally with a 24" (preferred) - 26" barrel length.

I've read the new 6mm Crusader can push them to 3300fps with a 27" barrel.

6XC? 6x47 Lapua? 243 / 243AI? 6mm CM? 6mm Remington / 6mmAI?

I'd rather not mess with fire-forming brass, but its not necessarily a deal-breaker.

Yeah, I was reading some of them last night. Seemed like I read 3300fps a few times. I don't really need / want quite that much velocity.

Was just wondering if anything else can get around 3200fps (3100fps, 3150fps, etc) ballpark. 6x47 Lapua looks pretty easy to load for, but I suspect it just doesn't have the case-capacity for those kinds of velocities, especially in a 24" - 26" barrel.

Re: 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

With a 26" barrel the 243 will do it easily, the 243 AI will do it easier. I cant make my 6xc's get that fast. the 6mm crusader would do it easily I'm sure, but I don't have one. If you don't want to FF brass, just get a 243 use rl. 25 and 3050 to 3100 is pretty easy to attain.

6-284 will do it and so will the 243AI

He has to remove the plate / modify AI magazines to accommodate the ~2.9" cartridge. Shooting the 115gr around 3300fps from a 27" barrel.

I was hoping there was maybe a slightly shorter cartridge that could get me ~3150-3200fps from a 24" - 26" barrel and not have to modify magazines.

I was under the impression this doesn't feed from an AICS / AIAW magazine though. </div></div>

You are probably correct, I didn't think about that.

Re: 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

A little bending and profiling of the feed lips in the AICS and "6-284" will work.No worky in the AW though.

How about that "6x47L long Dasher" that Lawton shoots.
I already get 3100 fps easily out of my 6xx47L with 115's.I think the improved version has 3 grains more capacity. There's no tuffer cartridge case on the market than 6.5x47 lapua cases.

Re: 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

With the 6-6.5x47 Lapua case being shorter than 243 Win, it's probably easier to seat the 115gr DTAC out past the neck / shoulder junction and still be around 2.8" OAL, right?

My concern is the 243 Win optimally loaded with the 115gr DTAC is going to be especially long.

I was playing with the Sierra Infinity 6.01 and comparing the 115gr SMK @ 3100fps -vs- the 6.5mm 139gr Scenar @ 2800fps. Surprised to see very little difference with a 10mph wind @ 900yds.

I thought it would be much more pronounced.

Re: 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

Michael Aos,

My 6x47L dtac load is 2.78" and out of the neck shoulder junction.

Yes the wind drift is supposed to be close. There's that whole max ord thing Lowlight talks about.Faster bullets staying lower in flight at max ord thus blowing in the wind less.He could explain it better.

Re: 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

Out of my standard i could push them 3200 but i had to back them down to 3050 to get really good results. Havent tried them out of the improved version cause they one we have is a 8.5 twist barrel and wont stabilize them. But they were going 3300.

243 Ackley ... no worries

Re: 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

I have to admit, I'm not "sold" on the whole AI thing. Looks like a pain in the butt to me. Seems like a 6-6.5x47Lapua would be less hassle.

I ran some numbers the other night in the Sierra Ballistics 6.01. It doesn't appear to have the 115gr DTAC, but they do list a 115gr SMK with a BC of .553. In "full value" 10mph wind, 115gr SMK @ 3100fps & 139gr Scenar (6.5mm) @ 2800fps are darned-near identical @ 900yds (the furthest I shoot).

With all that said though, I know a guy running the 6mmCM (Competition Match) which is basically a 243AI. If there's a "best" solution to a problem, he tends to find it, so I'm inclined to just copy whatever he's doing.

Re: 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

really, the 243 AI you fireform your brass. the 6-6.5x47 you have to resize or neck down with a die.

neither is hard or bad to do. 243 is nice because you can shoot factory ammo in it and it sizes to the AI chamber. you always have to neck down the 6-6.5x47 before firing. the 243 factory ammo is still very accurate and easily could be used for hunting, etc.

go read here... lots of great info !

Re: 115gr DTAC @ ~3200fps?

I'm running my d tacs at 3150 in a plain Jane 243 out of a 27" barrel with no pressure signs what so ever. Loaded oal of 2.85. I can't imagine you would lose that much by going to a 26" tube. I do plan on testing that when I shoot the barrel out. I'm going to break out a sawzal and a chronograph. Should be interesting. I don't see why you would need anything but a good ole 243.
