My 14 yr old boy's first bull elk at 940 yards.....I spent most of last summer getting my boy confident at 1,000 yards in varing wind conditions. With me spotting and doping the wind for him, he got pretty good at it, in fact he may even have a better eye than dear old dad.

Anyhow, my brother and I had already dropped our elk at 800 and 830 yards while he was in school and now it was time for Hunter to get his elk.

The night before was one of the worst wind storms I had ever been in with our wall tent. Many times that night, I was up trying to keep the smoke from back drafting in the tent, by about 3 am, I just put out the fire in the stove and went to bed.

By 5 am it was still blowing, and at about 9 am it all stopped. At that point we all said, crap, we got to go. We got to our ambush point way tooo late.

When we got there, a rag horn was walking at about 850 and there just was not enough time to get on him. So we just let him go and started to glass. A bit later, we spot several bedded and a spike by a tree at 940 yards, but my boy was not comfortable with the shot. A bit later, the bull bedded just behind a tree.

I told my boy to stay in the scope and watch for the bull to get up and be ready on the left side of the tree. My boy said, how do you know he's gonna walk left?? I said, look at the body, you see the dark brown head and chest, it's pointed left and ten bucks says he's gonna walk left when he gets up, so hold your cross hairs left of the tree and watch.

About 30 minutes later the bull stands up and kind of streatches. My boy is on the gun and the wind is light and variable and I dope it left, then dope it right, then finally go back to zero and say just hold for the wind to settle. Finally the wind settles and I say..."you on it",,,he says yea im on it...I say..."send it" and wham!!

The bull staggers like he's drunk....and I said put another in and tell me when you're on it...He said im on it...I see the wind is just about nill at this point and say..."send it" and wham,,,he drops like a ton of bricks.

When we recovered the bull, we see the first shot was dead center heart and lung and the second shot was a bit higher and broke his shoulder and neck. Had we of waited another minute and not shot, the bull would have dropped in his tracks.

Needless to say, my boy is now addicted to long range shooting and hunting. Foto below......

I forgot to post the fotos of the other Elk we shot at 800 yards and 830 yards...I don't have body shots of the elk, cause we just used my cam corder..We're missing two quarters, cause my brother took em..still a ton of meat none the less....

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Nice job, and nice story. Thanks for the write up and pics.

What is your load of H-1000, if I may ask?

Thanks!

Jeff

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Sorry, I forgot the load....90 grains H1000....We used to shoot about 92, but it seams as though last year at some point the H1000 got hotter and accuracy got worse so we backed her down to 90 grains. Some of my friends with edges noticed the same thing. Shawn Carlock pretty much recommends this load for all his rifles that go out the door.

It's not real hot, and the gun will shoot hotter, but this sucker is a tack driver with 90 grains.

When we shoot past 1,400, we always warm up at 1,000 yards. A few months ago my son shot a first round dead center hit on the steal at 1,000. I think I was doping something like 1 1/2 for wind. First round center shots are not that common at this target, but first round hits somewhere on the steal target are pretty commmon. The steal target is 18 by 24 inches. Kind of a big target, but it really teaches you the wind, cause you can see and hear almost every shot.

cheers

I know a guy in Post Falls who found the same issue with his 338 edge. He called Shawn and dropped it down also and now is back at the same accuracy. If a powder company changes anything they need to post it on the container IMHO.

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Yea, I know, nobody I know got notice from Hodgen...Word of mouth spread like wild fire last year and everyone started tuning down their loads. To this day, we still seem to be shooting the hotter load. I threw out my old powder, I didn't even want to mess with it. We don't shoot less than 1,000 yards anymore and the accuracy (or lack there of) is really evident in this powder at longer ranges...

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

That's awesome! I'm looking forward to when my son is old enough to hunt with me. He's got a .243 Tikka waiting already.
By the way Shawn builds a nice rifle. I went to his site last night and saw my rifle on the site. It's a Rem 700, desert camo A-5 w/ the coyote tan finish. I've had it for about a year now, love it.

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Thanks guys,,,Yea, I do get a grin every time I look at that foto...He is totally hooked on this now and that was my plan. My 10 year old was there as well, and I think he's hooked as well. Unfortunately Idaho doesn't let the boys hunt elk until they are 13. So the little one will have to wait a bit....

c ya guys

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Congratulations on starting another fine shooter on the right path. I wish I would have had the opportunity to shoot these distances at 15. He is going to be showing us all what is possible with a rifle when he is older.

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

wow, that was awesome shooting. I could only dream of getting a shot like that on the east coast. Tell your son congrats.

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

This is awesome! very nice write up, and congratulations to both of you, your son is lucky to have a dad like you to guide him on the sport.

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Good for you.

Nothing better than hunting with your kids! My boy just turned 6 and this will be his third year hunting with me. Can't take him
everytime I go but always a good experience.

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Can't wait for my son to get old enough to hunt with him like you are. I've got a 300 RUM that's dying to get rung out as a long range hunting rig. Shot a Larue target at 1800 yds with a 190 SMK with it so I'll go find a hunting bullet that would work well.

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Nice work!!! that spike 'll taste better than one of them old rank ruttin bulls anyways, once again excellent shot, tell your son to keep it up, always like to see our kids getting into the sport of LR shooting and hunting!!!

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Yea, it was a ton of fun...It's really amazing how much confidence these kind of hunts can instill in kids.....Someone said it earlier, these kinds of memories will be etched in our minds as long as we live.

I can still remember the first buck I shot, it was over 30 years ago, but I can remember it like it was yesterday, the same thing with my first elk.

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

But, where were you at EXACTLY again? hehehe

Great story, and one your son will remember forever. My two older sons still talk about getting their first deer when we had our property (by Usk, WA) So I recognize those big grins. LOL

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

Funny...we used to hunt near Usk for deer..Haven't hunted there for a long time though..We spend most of our time hunting Idaho for Elk and hunt the deer close to my home in WA...We pretty much save the long range stuff for ELk, they are much bigger targets...

Re: 15 yr old boy shoots ELK just under 1,000 yards

We,ve got so much elk steak, it's comming out our ears. Im fearful for this year, cause my 13 yr old is of age and we will have four elk tags between us and 5 deer tags.

So come on over and take one of Shawn Carlocks long range hunting classes (he's only about 1/2 hour from me) and you can take some elk meat home with ya....
