16-18 inch shorty rifles

As a point of nothing, I had a slew of 6.5 creedmoor loaded for a 26" barrel I no longer have. I decided to try it in a 20 incher to see what would happen. It shot .75 inches or so, but had an ES of 4 and an SD of 1.5, so I am going to shoot the hell out of them. Anyway, in a 26 inch barrel, the load shot out at 2765, while on the 20 inch it averaged 2642. This is with 144 berger LR hybrids.

If you want those 144s to reach 2765 or better in that 20" you can just use Power Pro 2000mr powder instead and you'll be surprised . It's like you arent shooting at 20" but a 26"

My shorty Tikka T3 got a chassis makeover, swapped from a Grayboe Terrain to KRG Bravo. 17” Carbon Six barrel in 6.5CM.

Got my barreled action back from DMR a couple days ago and super excited about this thing. Put it in a manners eh1 I got from another hide member. Can’t wait to get it zeroed and get some loads through the chrono. 16.5” 6.5 creedmoor, Curtis Axiom action, Deadair nomad 30 can, NF ATACR 4-16x42. Right under 10lbs as she sits!

Anyone chop their tikka stock CTR barrel down to 18” or less? Anyone chopped it and fluted or does that create a bigger headache since it was fluted after the fact?
16.5" CTR 260 Rem and 17" lite 7mm-08, no fluting. It'll cost you roughly $150+ to flute it and I don't think you'll save enough weight to warrant the cost. Save the $$ for a carbon stick once you shoot it out

Makes sense. I’m thinking of cutting down my 20” CTR to 17-18” and shooting the barrel out. Then go to a CF barrel after that.

16.5” seems super short but would be very handy. How do you like it?

I run a 5.5" long can on it so I'm right at 22". Great for hunting out of a blind/tree stand, but must say my favorite is my 11.5" 6.5 Grendel w/the same can for 250 yard and in whitetail/yote hunting

I also love my grendel. I think I’m leaning towards cutting my CTR down to 17”

I have 2 shorty bolt guns.

One is a little rifle to use for light patrol work around the homestead. It's a .223 Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 that I had cut to 16.25" and fitted with a closed tine Warcomp. and a Leupold AR scope.

The other is a WWII battle rifle I converted into a modern defensive carbine. A concept I came up with looking at the M1A Scout Squad, and the "Tanker Garand". It's a No4 Mk1 shortened to 18" and fitted with a Sig Romeo 5 red dot.

Normally, I'd cringe at the Enfield chop/bubba job but damn! That is slick as hell!!!!

On another note, I notice that Howa has a new model of 1500 in .308 and 6.5 CM that comes with a 16.25" threaded barrel.

Speaking of “Tanker Garand” and shorty rifles.... here’s one that’s near and dear to me. Started life as a CMP barreled receiver w/bolt. I sent it to Tim Shufflin of Shuff’s Parkerizing, and he completed the rifle and converted to his “Mini-G”, which consists of shortening the barrel to 16.25”, and reworking the op-rod and follower arm to match. It got a Boyd’s laminate stock that I ended up sanding and reshaping because it was so fat; and attempted a jungle type camo pattern. Someday I’ll pick up a new Dupage walnut stock set and fix it up right maybe.

It’s light, it’s very handy, and it’s accurate. I can cluster an 8 round en-bloc clip of milsurp 30-06 into a 3 inch hole at 50 yards shooting off hand. And it’s just a flat out blast to shoot.

You must be in S. Nevada. We had rain up here in Sparks, both afternoons.
Now this is a Sporting Rifle...Not a shorty (sorry if I got off target of the thread), but it is more "sporting" for what one is going to shoot...

East of Fallon. I packed up once I was under a shadow. Last time I was up North I’d Spanish Springs wind was ruthless. No offense taken. I bet it’s a fun shooter.

Anyone looking for a badass shorty, she’s for sale...

Also, anyone else hear anything about the AICS/Bravo mags not working for a Howa .223?

I have a 223 1500 in a KRG 180-X-Ray. MDT plastic 223 AICS magazines work perfectly.

Make sure you read KRG's instruction sheet. The forend can be adjusted to clean up magazine fit in the well.
