16-18 inch shorty rifles

For me, it’s going to be whatever contour makes the gun balance correctly. May be kind of tough to figure it out exactly if you do not already have most of the parts but there is listed weights for each contour and length. I then add weights to my set up along either the previous barrel or in the barrel inlet if I don’t have the barrel and use that info to order the right one.

What’s the ideal contour for a short barrel? REM Varmint/light Palma?
24" M40 chopped to 16"!

Super fatty is like 1.1" at the shoulder.

Couldn't help myself and rattle canned it after today's range session. Got a 308 load I'd like to take to distance next month.

Depends on the purpose of the rifle. Trying to drop weight for a walking rifle? Go carbon with a light weight chassis.

Wanting short for maneuverability but need weight for stability and not going to walk around with it? Go thick.

I have had carbon, medium palma and a friend has a MTU all 16”. The carbon was for a walking gun, and the 2 heavier contours were built for prarie dog shooting out of trucks and off tripods where the extra weight helps stabilized for shooting the little furry suckers at distance.

Figures your being in the “short and stumpy” thread

Got parts for a 16.5" 25 PRC build starting to show up. Need to get a can on order. Was thinking about a Nomad Ti XC or LTi XC.

Any thoughts on the suppressor? This is a hunting rig, so weight and length will factor in.

There’s only 2 oz difference. I would worry more about the trade of length vs suppression. You will have a marginal increase in suppression but almost 2” of length. That said the ti should be hearing safe for 1-3 rounds but no suppressor should be used more than that without ear pro either way.

I have both ti XC and lti XC. I shoot the short version much more often. It's a solid fn can. The new rdx30ti with integral brake ports actually tested pretty damn well at the recent 2025 TBAC supressor summit. That cans 7.3" long. These new 3d print cans are the shit.

Here's a new 5" supressor that's only rated to 18" on a prc. But in this video it shows to be very similar to the TBAC Ultra7 gen2.

TBAC Ultra 5
TBAC Magnus K
Airlock Zero Gravity
TBAC Ultra 7

2 shots each. That lil 5in airlock can sounds just like the ultra7 gen2. I orderd one a few days ago for hunting this season.
