Directly comparing MVs for both barrels, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 16" pipe was only losing 75-100 fps to the 22". So the 16" can push 175 SMKs at around 2500-2550 fps with temps in the 20-40 degree range, probably a little faster when it's warmer. If interested, I posted a more detailed report a while back:

Great build cjgemm, you went for the exact rifle I'm going to be building as my general purpose bolt gun. Your rifle inspired me to go ahead and pick up the A1-3 instead of the HTG/M40. I prefer the wider forearm for off-hand and moving shots.
Nice addition of the mono-pod on the rear sling swivel. Thanks for the contribution, great minds think alike!

This 308 started at 26 inches. I then cut it down to 20" and just yesterday with the spirit of going green and down sizing I bobbed it down to 16 inches.
Another couple of inches off the end and you'll be playing in my neighborhood. Been saying for a long time how well these short barrels will shoot. Left a short note over on Specialty Pistol how you guys are going shorter and some of them are putting 20" to 27" and even longer barrels on their "Pistols".
I'm happy at 15" and find no problems out to 1000 yards, just a few more clicks in the scope and we're good to go. The short stiff barrels seem to work pretty darn good. Just finding it amusing how each is experimenting in the opposite direction.
I'm loving these shorty rifles. I find that short rifles are more functional and they still work fantastic within realistic distances for any purpose 99% of us will ever use them for.
I was planning a 20 inch build but now I am considering going even shorter...down to 18.
When looking at the numbers I really just don't see where I'm giving up that much performance....especially when you consider the functionality gains of a shorter rifle package in the first place.
I'm looking forward to contributing to this thread shortly.

Here's one of mine. Remington 700 .300 Blackout with a Shilen SS 16" heavy varmint barrel with 1:8" twist. Take off LTR stock. Topped with a 20 MOA EGW base and Bushnell 3200 10x Tactical scope.
Donor rifle started out as a SPS Varmint in .17FB. Chose this chambering for it's reliability in extracting and ejecting smaller cases. Everything has worked flawless so far.

There are a lot of nice rifles in this thread. Thanks for the inspiration, I think I know what my next project will be now. I've looked at some LTRs in gun shops and liked the handiness of the rifles with their 20" tubes, I can only imagine what a few more inches removed would do.

Bottom metal is from accurate mag fits the factory BM outline and uses AICS mags. The stock is a B&C medalist A2 that was cut out to fit the DBM by jon addis. If you have any other questions PM me

I know it is a ABS wrapped barrel. I just wanted to know who wraped the barrel because the only ABS barrels I have seen have come from Jensen precision or Christensen tactical, and that barrel doesn't look like it came from eighter of them.

I've got an 18" BlackOps Precision Infidel sitting at the FFL now... I wanted to pick it up today but that didn't happen, hoping I have the opportunity tomorrow. Planning to shoot it this weekend.

This is my old Tikka T3 Lite coyote rifle in .243 that I had cut down to 16 1/2" and a Vias micro brake installed. Worked great on yotes, fox, bobcat, rabbit, etc., out to 300 yards or so.

Now look at those barrel flutes! </div></div>damn sexy gun porn and some people think them short barrels cant shoot over 300 yds ...i heard this crap for years with todays powders etc dumb rasses !
I decided to try out the DTA SRS since I was looking for a compact bolt gun. I haven't shot it yet so I'm not sure how I'm going to like it, but the size is great. Mine is the standard SRS with a 22" 308 barrel. Below are pictures comparing the SRS to my AIAW with a 20" barrel and Mk12 with an 18" barrel.
