Question for the folks here- I have a 20" Remington 700 5R in .223, it's a 1/9 twist. I want to cut it down to 16 or 16.5" so with a suppressor it won't be too much longer than 20". It will likely be suppressed 100%. I expect a small accuracy gain from the shorter barrel as well as the suppressor (not that I'll be able to tell with my skill), but what is a realistic hit in FPS from 20" to 16", and how does that translate to farthest I can shoot?

Current rifle sits in a B&C Medalist Tactical, and wears a Nightforce F1. It's my trainer rifle and I want to repeatedly hit 600-800yds with the short barrel if possible.

I bought one of the Remington 16.5" in .223. Promptly put it into a McMillan Game Scout with CDI bottom metal. The barrel lets me seat a Sierra 69 grain MK out far enough to put 27.2 grains of MR2000 into the LC case for a MV of 2926 fps without any excessive pressure signs. Accuracy with my Saker is usually right around 5/8" +/-. Even with a cover on my Saker, I start to get mirage after awhile. But, for a short barrel, it's accurate and fast ( enough).

I just finished opening up the barrel channel on an EH1 for my 16.5" SPS...
And I have been feeling really good about this rifle...
Unfortunately I keep looking at these chassis builds and my mind starts wandering off...
I just don't know if this itch is going to go away,or I'll just have to break down and scratch it...
I guess the bright side is,what's just one more rifle...???

ShootStraight that is one nice looking setup you've got there.

Here's my shorty. It just lacks a can. By the way how do you like the SDN-6 on a bolt gun Precision rig? Is it repeatable being a quick detach?

Blackops Infidel speced rifle.

Thanks! Nice setup you have there also
The SDN6 is just an awesome can. Its versatility makes it worth so much more IMO. POI shift is pretty much unnoticeable. Maybe there's some there but not from what I can tell. I'm not really too concerned with precision per say out of this setup though...not what I built it for but I get some sub MOA groups and that's good enough for me.

Ashbury Chassis Mod-1 FDE, Bushnell Elite 3.5-21x50mm FFP HORUS TRMR2, LaRue SPR 34mm mount, Atlas Bipod, Surefire Brake, Remington 700 16.1 inch barrel/ oversized bolt handle installed/ OD Green custom finish/ Timney trigger, NF angle indicator.

Hey gadget...I know it's not polite to ask a lady her weight...so I'll ask you(grin) what does she weigh...???

I post this on the thread half jokingly, half seriously, but it is a shawty:

Ruger american rifle, predator, .308. comes from the factory with an 18" threaded "heavy sporter" contour barrel, .68" at the muzzle.

it's an el cheapo, at $350ish, and I wouldn't ever expect to build on it. but dadgum it's a handy little rifle.

Very curious to see what kind of accuracy you get out of that thing.

Man, this thread has already cost me $6300 or so. My GAP 308 should be ready any day now.

I went with a 16"bartlien tight bore 5R PSS sendero contour 5/8x24

Templar V2

Manners TF1 with atlas rail.

Is there anyone here who might can help me out with reloading and MV ballpark figure.

I have a tin of 175 smks and varget and was thinking that should be just fine. But I've also got a good bit of imr4064 and benchmark and 178 amax, 168 amax, and a few 155 scenar.

Has anyone seen that the short ones like different recipes than their linger brethren? Most of my 308 loading has been for 20" and some 26".

Expected MV would be great too if there is any insight here

Thanks.

I've shot the 175's from my 16" plenty, and the only downside is the load is really slow, 2500fps. it'll get the job done, but you really gotta dial in a lot of elevation to get out there. I switched to 155 Palma SMK's and i'm not planning on going back to 175's. I get the 155's going at 2775 from 16", and there's no pressure. I don't think it's a good idea to give you my load, with that tightbore barrel, you'll probly blow yourself up. I believe with my setup I can reach 2800fps, but it shoots great where it's at, i'm not gonna fuss about another 25fps.

Awesome short bus. Thanks. What powder are you using. That's what I meant sorry
I always work up my own load cause each rifle is different. I guess I'll try my 155 scenar first to see how they do.

Wow! I wonder if I can get those speeds with varget or benchmark. Those numbers are really impressive to me for a 16". I think that the 155 palma will be my pick as well. Maybe the scenar will be impressive too. Thanks a lot. I can't wait.
