What 17hmr ammo is your go to ammo? My brother in law is buying a 17hmr and I plan to buy him a couple boxes of ammo for his birthday. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Only 2 companies manufacture 17 hmr cartridges, CCI and Winchester.
Hornady, Federal, Norma and Remington are relabeled CCI.
Browning is relabeled Winchester.
Results are dependent on batch quality the day of manufacture.
Neither CCI or Winchester make anything but hunting ammo.
Welcome to the assembly line lottery.

I have very good results on digger squirrels with CCI A17, CCI TNT, and Hornady Vmax 17g.

The Vmax 17g has been my go to due to price, availability, and good accuracy, I've shot 8-10k rds of it.

I bought some Winchester 17g HP and FMJ and it was without a doubt the worst .17HMR ammunition I've shot. Poor accuracy and split neck cases.

Tried weight sorting/rim thickness/oal for an entire brick of CCI 17 grain Vmax.
No significant improvement shown even with 0.1 grain intervals. Not worth the time spent.
Cartridge defects cause more problems than weight variations.
Variations in seating depth and angle, brass shape/diameter, crimp tension all create unpredictable strays.
Sloppy tolerances on the assembly line make for too many differences in the final product. :(

My CZ455 likes 20 gr. pills. Next is CCI FMJ and gamepoints. None of them are terrible out to 100 yd. Switched to 17 over 22 for squirrels.
