Time to head back to my roots. I was born and raised in Mississippi, so I have a lifetime non-resident native son hunting license that pretty much allows me to do anything in the state that a resident can. That includes registering for the public alligator lottery - which I've lost for the past five years or so.

This year I was picked. Trouble is... I don't know squat about alligator hunting.

I've got to attend a class before being issued my tags, but I was wondering if anyone has done this and has any tips or suggestions. I'm not so stupid as to believe I'm an expert because I've seen Swamp People.

There is a small diamond shaped spot in an aligator's skull that is aparently very easy to hit with a rusty ragged assed 22 rifle...if you stick the muzzle difectly on the spot. Nothing to it, I have seen every episode of Swamp People so I am a pro.

I've got a little single shot 410. Seeing those guys use a .22 on TV, I've got to imagine that is enough.

But, is it rusty? Is it held together by duck tape or bailing wire? Is it prone to jam, misfire or otherwise leave you in a lurch? If not, then you are not prepared...

Have fun and post pics!!!

I imagine you can find a ton of "instant expert" tips on YouTube that might be able to give you some ideas. I have several friends that have hunted them in Florida and they said the guides most often resorted to the snagging then with treble hooks on stout rods technique, tire them out...reel them in...and choot'em technique. Anyhow, best of luck to you and look forward to seeing a picture of your slain quarry.

Remf I would think we could find you some extras if you need them. There are a lot of guys here that love gator hunting. Too many bugs for me. Let us know if you need some hunters to help and we can ask around. Good luck

I went to the mandatory class on Saturday while in MS, and I got some good information. I'm excited about the hunt, and I'll keep everyone updated with pictures. It's nice to be able to do this without all the fees of an outfitter!

Check out Bullnettler, there is a whole section with a lot of info on it for gator hunting in Mississippi. I don't know the web address of hand so just google "Bullnettler". There are guys on there that will take you with all their equipment just so long as you have a tag. I hope this helps!
