i've got a old model sako forester in 22-250 with a 1:12 twist. what grain bullet should i start with? i know this isn't sniper-related, but i figured there is more than enough knowledge and experience here to get me started.

You could start with a 55gr, but I think anything from 40-60 should work in a 1-12T at 22-250 vel.

I don't ever use anything under 55 grain in mine. I had a 22-250 that wouldn't group very good at all and my gunsmith told me to try 55 grain bullets and it done a whole lot better. He told me that he won't load anything lighter than 55 grain bullets because of the higher velocity in the 22-250.

Ive shot 40gr Vmaxs out of a 250, and it was unreal what they did to PDs. If I rember right they were going 4100fps.

What range and target/varment will you be shooting. I think that is the #1 deciding factor.
I use 55 grain Sierra blitz kings in my bone stock Rem VSSF. I only shoot to 500 yards with it, as accuracy begins to fall off past that. If I were to shoot past 500 with it, I would go to a faster twist and heavier bullet. 55 is a good starting point IMO. IMR 4064.

I would suggest you shoot the same 55 grain Sierra BK as I do. With a great cartridge like the 22-250 each and every one of us thinks we have the bomb. It will work with just about anything. I will say that you can shoot the 55 BK faster than Sierra says you can without risking a mid air blow up of the bullet. I push them to a chronographed 3925 with no ill effects.

50 g V max in my HB 250 forester is the stuff. Makes parts fly off upon contact.

I always had excellent results with Hornady 60 grain spire points.
