I’ve got a spot out my back door where I can a 2400 yard target. Unfortunately that’s the closet’s target I can get after the 800 yard mark due to the terrain. Is that practical with a 300win mag? Or do I need to get into a 338 lapua mag or something bigger?

you should go to the ELR forum theres a ton of info

all things equal if you want more hits than misses, youll be looking at larger than 338

lots of guys will chime in that they shoot their 6.5 CM etc, but lobbing dozens of rounds downrange to get on hit..is moronic

also do some research on the King of 2 mile competition

there are some videos on youtube as well

.300 NM is probably going to be your easiest ticket for doing that.

Frank was getting good hits at that range with his 224 Valkyrie
I've shot my 224V out to a mile. I've got hits but they don't move the steel plate. The only way that I know if I've hit the plate is by hearing the ring on steel.

For that to happen, nobody else can be shooting. It's got to be quiet. The time of flight is a little less than 4 seconds. It takes a little over 4 1/2 seconds for the sound to travel back to me if I've hit the plate. That's 8 1/2 seconds after I squeeze the trigger until I hear something.

I still can't figure out why people look at me funny when I yell out, "can everyone just shut up and stop shooting for a few minutes!" :)

I’ve shot 2400 and further with 300WM and 215 hybrids and it works great. I even got a second round hit at 2308 at Arena running 190gr FGMM.

So yes, it will work. 300NM and 300PRC launching 215 Hybrids would also be excellent. As would 338LM.

I think first round %'s @ 2400 are going to be rough until you get into a 375. I have a 300 RUM throated for 250's and it's not consistent at that range. I'm supersonic until ~2200, but consistency drops way off for me beyond 2K. She has put 10 into a 15 inch square @ 1500 though, on a still day.
